Crazy Idea? Hershel Walker Trade Part 2

Gordo : 9/16/2019 9:09 am
This isn't something i'm actually suggesting, just a thought experiment.

Thoughts on trading Barkley? He's never going to be more valuable than he is right now. If we could get a kings ransom for him, would you pull the trigger? like the Cowboys did with walker?

In a vaccuum I would consider it, but with this front office, i don't trust them enough not to fuck up the returns.

What teams would want him? what would you want in return?
not today please

No one makes trades like that anymore

And, like you said, I wouldn't trust Gettleman with all those picks anyway.
settle down gordo.

We traded the best WR the Giants have ever had
mikeinbloomfield : 9/16/2019 9:10 am : link
and got two rookies who haven't exactly lit it up and a safety who got blocked into next week by a tight end.

I don't trust this admin to get a good deal on a bagel.
With what we got from the OBJ trade...

Gettleman is not allowed to make anymore blockbuster trades.
oh, for fucks sake.

So here's the thing.

On the surface at the end of the season, not a TERRIBLE idea. However, not only would we never get equal value back, I'm not even entirely sure we'd even get a first rounder back. He would have 2 years of wear and tear*, and be 2 years closer to needing a big new contract.

* - to be fair the way Shurmur is actually using Barkley, I'm not sure he's getting the wear and tear most "franchise" RBs take.
Woof.

Gonna be a rough week.

If we had any semblance of talent besides Barkley he would be that much better. This team is void of talent and you want to trade the only legit difference maker we have.Go back to your fantasy league world.
ha
Gordo : 9/16/2019 9:24 am : link
everyone settle down..lol

i'm just trying to distract myself, and playing this out in my head.. by the time this team is competitive, we will need to pay him big money and who knows how many years he will have at an elite level

If only Mike Ditka were still in the league.

The Herschel Walker trade
Matt in SGS : 9/16/2019 9:26 am : link
was something that will never happen again because it was a confluence of so many factors.

- JImmy Johnson and Jerruh came there to tear down everything that Landry and Tex Schram had built. The Cowboys roster was old and slow. Johnson was a successful college coach at Miami and he knew the talent pipeline that was coming and the speed that was the direction of the game.

- The Cowboys did have some good young players in 1989 (Aikman in his first year, Irvin in his 2nd year, Moose Johnston). But their marquee name was Herschel Walker. Walker no longer fit because his value was immediate. The Giants essentially already made the same move by sending Odell away. Think of Barkley more as Aikman. A building block.

- Johnson completely ran circles around Vikings GM Mike Lynn, who was old school and didn't care about draft picks. Lynn was under pressure to win the Super Bowl. In 1989, the Bears had finally showed that they were collapsing and opened the door for the Vikings. They had a great defense and felt Herschel was the final piece. But Lynn missed the details of the trade. They traded a bunch of role playing scrubs for Walker (Jesse Soloman, Ike Holt, Darren Nelson, etc). But the fine details said that if those guys were not on the roster at the end of the 1989 season, the Vikings would give an equalvent pick of a first rounder and second rounder. Lynn never thought that Johnson would just cut all of them at the end of the season and take all the picks. Which he then wheeled and dealed and built the dynasty.

Bottom line, Odell was Herschel Walker. He didn't have a go forward value to the team and they traded him now. But similar to Aikman/Irvin etc, Barkley is a building block. They have another potential one in Jones, once the Giants decide to cut the shit and rip off the last bandaid to turning the page and shake Eli's hand and tell him it's time and let Jones play.
Barkley is the only reason
upnyg : 9/16/2019 9:27 am : link
some of still watch. Also if Jones is ever to play, he's going to need Barkley, Tate, and Shepard to have a chance.

If they stink in 2020/21, then maybe.
Maybe we can explore the loopholes that would allow us to
Waldo Jeffers : 9/16/2019 9:28 am : link
rent him out weekly to teams that could use his specialized talents in particular situations (with an option to buy after X amount of miles which would be determined later.)

Or we could simply stop the madness, turn our fantasy leagues into bowling leagues and never watch another snap as long as the Maras own the Giants.
one minor point
Greg from LI : 9/16/2019 9:28 am : link
Isaac Holt wasn't cut, he stayed with Dallas through their first SB season.

I agree Odell was Herschel, however the one thing i have a hard time with is, Barkley won't last as long as a QB will.

If you just list the picks he got (17 and the last pick in the 3rd round), it's still not a good trade.
