There are very few people who are good at it. The entire league has no idea how to hire HC's. Look at how many are absolutely horrible choices. McAdoo, Bowles, Shurmer just in NY the past few years. The Mara's have clearly demonstrated they have no idea how to hire a HC.

I know this will be met with a huge blow back and open a can of worms but if I was John Mara there is is only one person i would be talking to about who to hire as football president and who to hire a the next HC.

Bill Parcells. He still follows the league and keeps in contact with many of the coaches. I wouldn't formally hire him as a consultant like they did with Ernie and I wouldn't discuss with anyone especially in the media that I was speaking with him.

But he's uniquely qualified to recommend people from outside the Giants tiny circle of trust that could work in the NY market and with the Mara's. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
