Is Pat Shurmur a Jim Zorn clone?

mattlawson : 9/16/2019 10:03 am
A good coordinator, QB whisperer type coach but not HC material? During the game I was just thinking to myself all the ways they've gotten away from what clearly is the teams strength in favor of a west coast style offense. Conceptual leanings over playing good, physical football. This team does not have the same sense of "attack" as any other team I've watched over the passed 2 weeks. The ONLY thing that has looked good is Barkley. And we're not utilizing him.

This has all reminded me of the Zorn years in DC. Living down here as a Giants fan those were some great years with the Skins being essentially a punching bag. That team just got worse and worse as things went on. I fear that's where we are headed if something doesn't change. Granted I can't see Shurmur resorting to a swinging gate gimmick TWICE in a row, but there's time...
Yes, he’s a good OC

Peter principle at it again.
Give Shurmur the Rams or Saints roster

He also makes the playoffs.

At some point it's not the gray matter behind the headset but the carbon on the field...
No

He's in the same tier as Jim Schwartz, Norv Turner, Wade Phillips, Todd Bowles, etc. They're excellent coordinators but poor HC's.
Team stinks

here that he's a good OC? i think right now the jury's out about him being good at anything, other than looking perpetually pissed off and miserable on the sideline.
If he

I thought he did a good job with that offense, and the qb, which is why he was hired here
it would appear the giants

have missed the mark in hiring/promoting persons who are more witnesses to success than responsible for or intergral to it (mcadoo, shurmur, reese- arguably)
I have no idea

whether he's a good coach or not. He probably has the worst roster in the NFL that doesn't play in Miami.

As awful as things look (and are likely to continue looking for the rest of the year) I think it makes sense to give Shurmur and DG a year 3. Let them have another draft, and a full salary cap, and not be saddled with Eli, and see what they can do. If year 3 is another disaster, then completely clean house and start new.
they look nothing

My hunch is that he can be a fine head coach, but

he needs to delegate the play-calling to someone else. Shurmur strikes me as a respected leader of men, someone who understands how to relate to a wide variety of people -- he was a center, after all, the anchor of the line. On the sideline, though, he needs to focus on his strengths and let the OC and the DC do what they're paid to do: call the shots on the field
I think he stinks

Apparently Barkley at some point in the game, I did not see this but my son did, was barking at Shurmur. I would too if I was your best option and you can't find ways or commit to getting him the ball more then 18 times in the game three of which were passes.
