To the Preseason Optimists

Mike from SI : 9/16/2019 10:12 am
who insinuated or flat-out stated that we weren't real fans for being bearish on this upcoming season: Do you maintain your position that we're somehow deficient fans or can you maybe admit that we love the Giants but saw with clear eyes where this season was headed?

And, yes, I was very frustrated by the preseason optimism but even more frustrated at the accusations that those who didn't share it sucked and/or weren't real fans. I very much want to be wrong about my pessimism.
Dude, didn't you SEE that incredible team celebration

This is bound to be the most memorable positive moment from the 2019 season.
Come on this is enough of a shit show

without us fans turning on eachother.
I was one of those optimists

And today, I sit here behind my keyboard numb and very disappointed.

I wanted to believe Peppers, Baker, and Lawrence just to name the top three newbies, could help improve our defense much more than last year’s mess. So far, it’s about the same.....still a mess!

I did think you REALISTS were not being fair perhaps because you were still upset at losing Odell or perhaps because you were upset we drafted DJ at number 6. So yes, I did not have warm and fuzzy feelings about you guys.

But today, while I’m not giving up after only two games and still believe we can turn this around, today I’m too numb to really think much. I have no energy to fight with you guys or anyone. At my age, 66, I don’t have the will to fight much except on the golf course. I am losing faith in both Shurmur and Bettcher so for now, I’m blaming them more than the players. I know this is sort of a cop out, but like I said, I haven’t given up on the players yet.

And of course watching my Mets blow that lead last night to the hated Bums hasn’t helped my state of mind much either.

Oh, lastly, I apologize for any remarks I made insinuating you guys were not true fans. I now know we all show our love and want the best for our boys in our own ways. You guys have and had a right to voice your concerns and anger just as much as I had the right to voice my optimism and joy. Sorry.....Go Giants...please turn this around, please!

The light of your wisdom will lead from the darkness of ignorance into the light of total despair.

We thank you.

...say that the preseason jag-offs were not real fans?

"Look at me posts" about how one knows that the team or player will be bad makes that person a dick. A real fan, but a dick.

I have lowered my preseason prediction to 9-7.

Who'm I kidding...
...10-6 jag-offs.

Go Giants!
You mean the loud minority? Who cares?
Brown Recluse : 9/16/2019 10:53 am : link
Anyone who thought this team would be above .500 was kidding themselves.

Most rational people saw a team that would finish around 7-9 or 8-8 in 2019 and compete next year.
I'm not a realist, or an optimist, I'm just a season ticket holder
mikeinbloomfield : 9/16/2019 11:24 am : link
who questioned the wisdom of some of the moves of our GM. Shurmer or Bettcher might be out of their depth, but I don't know how you judge that with the players they've been given. Even the guys Gettleman traded weren't world beaters, even if they were better than what we have now.

Anyway, my point is I've done more than my share of "told-ya's" because what else is there to talk about with this team. But its getting kind of old.

Some people are more concerned with being right on a Giants message board then they are with the actual state of the franchise.

calling people with a pessimistic view "a shitty fan" is option B around here for a few, right after accusing them of being a dupe troll
I go into every season optimistic.
GiantsUA : 9/16/2019 11:36 am : link
In the NFL (not for long league) where teams can turn things around relatively quickly, I thought the giants might be able to cobble together enough wins to sniff the wildcard.

Wrong again, at least we have the Yankees!

I doubt it and call BS. I was a preseason optimist but I didn't disparage anyone who didn't think that. It's been two games. I thought 8 wins was possible and it might still be though I was counting on the D being maybe average and they obviously aren't. 7 new starters and two rookies are a few too many and I didn't think it would matter as much as it has.
take away any teams top 3 wr's and you can't expect much
Dave : 9/16/2019 12:38 pm : link
imo.

and it wasn't a deep position group to start with.

the problem is the secondary, everyone can see that
Who were these preseason optimists you are referring to?
justafan : 9/16/2019 12:46 pm : link
I don't think you can find a single person on this forum who thought the Giants would have a winning record this year.
I did

pjcas18 : 9/16/2019 12:50 pm : link
offensive and antagonistic were the ones in the "predict the Giants record" thread who would say "5-11 or 6 - 10, how can you say the Giants aren't better than last year" And "the team is better and has an easier schedule"

other people looked at a lot of young, unproven players, a lack of talent, an old QB, same coaches, and strength of schedule is very misleading (before the season).

There was a entire thread solely for predicting the team's record before the season, and there were a whole bunch of people predicting winning records.

6-10 prediction now seems like pie eyed optimism. However, we are two games into this season with 2/3 of a new team. It will get better.
I was one of the pre-season optimists

and I think I may have disparaged a few of the perennial pessimists. I have to admit that the teams performance is not sitting well with me the first two games. Expected much, much more out of this offense then we are getting - I expected the backfield to have major growing pains but be scrappy, I also expected the ERs to be more effective than they have shown.

I also didn't think Eli would be a problem -- but I think he is tentative and pressing after a botch -- and he doesn't have the Oline to blame any more -- it kinda sux
