The Eli Manning Era is Over

Canton : 9/16/2019 5:49 pm

Ralph Vacchiano
Quote:
The Eli Manning Era is over, whether the Giants are ready to make it official or not.

It came to an end on Monday morning when Pat Shurmur reversed course and flung open the door he had been trying so hard to keep closed. Just 20 hours after he said it wasn't time to have the conversation, he decided "it's fair" to now talk about benching the 38-year-old Manning in favor of 22-year-old rookie quarterback Daniel Jones.

At that moment, Manning was done. Only the final arrangements need to be ironed out.

Quote:
So Shurmur's words on Monday morning were like gasoline. And it leaves him with only two choices for the immediate future. He can make the switch right now and bench the franchise icon to start Jones on Sunday afternoon in Tampa. Or if not, he has to be ready to do it the minute Manning, or even the Giants undermanned offense, starts to struggle again -- even if it's in the middle of a game.

Because if you think the Giants quarterback situation was controversial before, you ain't seen nothing yet

That's it. The Eli Manning Era is Over - ( New Window )

Much of the season now is about selecting the right moment to bid adieu to Eli Manning and thank him for all he's done for the franchise. And then to usher in the Daniel Jones era, may it last a decade.

I don't think Shurmur is nearly that decisive. I think they're going to wring their hands nervously about it for at least another week.
I hope when Hanlon retires he writes a book.

I would read it for a glimpse into the nexus of the media and palace intrigue... Who knows if this was the wagons circled media plan or Shurmur just being honest.

In principle, this is exactly what's going to happen.
It won't be just sucking now, it will be a curse.
This is going to be a long long long time before this team is competitive again.

Because it's misleading. It's now reasonable enough to believe the era could literally be over.

THe giants are going to be cursed because they are moving on from their old immobile Qb and handing over the reigns to the Qb they just drafted to get the new era started ? geez, some of you need to really get a grip .

Change your last name of the team you root for to the new york mannings

Totally agree. As a long time and aging Giants fan, I worry about the direction and approach of management in handling this transition. There is the manner in which the Yankees (and now the Rangers) have handled the transition to rebuild and then there is the pathetic approach taken by the Knicks. Most fans can handle a cut the chord, full-on rebuild with a commitment to youth. What is more difficult is this half-in, half-out--half-ass, approach that has gone on for several years now within the Giants organization.

I don't think that's fair. Yes, clicks, sure.

But my main takeaway was that just uttering that there might be a change creates so much chaos that it almost becomes self fulfilling. That the organization is well aware of that impending chaos and therefore the end is sooner rather than later.

All week the press will be asking the players about this. I think that the PS and brass discussed this yesterday and the wheels are in motion.

Would not be surprised if PS announces Wednesday morning Jones is the starter Sunday and for the rest of the season.

If he had written it when Jones was drafted, sure.

Putting it out there on a day filled with news on Jones possibly taking snaps away from Eli on a starter basis? Absolutely just baseless shit stirring trying to maximize clicks based on the news of the day.
Not really sure what Ralph's point is.

It seems to be that the inevitable is coming, which means the era is over. But that's unchanged from the start of the season. Sure, some could fantasize that we'd surprise and Eli would keep Jones on the sidelines a;; year, but I think most recognized that was very unrealistic. We all knew we'd see Jones at some point this season, and some wavering from the coach now may be earlier than expected, but that's just a timing issue. The era was over before the season began. It was just a matter of how soon and how inelegant the absolute end would be. There are probably at least a few weeks left to pick things up, but it's looking pretty inelegant.

I have been to every single 1 of Eli Manning snaps in the NFL. I don't know how many people can say that. I love him as much as his wife does and thank him for everything he has done for us fans (best to ever to do it).

As much as I believe its not his fault he's not blame free either. Giants have been in limbo for years now and each year gets more n more frustrating. If it's not the line it's the receivers if its not the receivers its the pass rush etc. etc. with no ending.

I'm the most positive Giants fan there is but at 0-2 and the future not looking so bright (when I say future I mean right now) I'm all for playing the 6th pick in the draft. This doesn't mean I'm throwing in the towel this means it's time to see what the actual future will look like. PUT IN DANIEL JONES.

Why this is so hard for me is cause I'm numb today.... I'm not pissed off I'm not mad I'm not angry I'm not going nuts..... Which means I'm getting used to losing and that my friends is not good.

Do I think Jones is the savior for this year...NOPE, Do I think he's better than Eli, NO but I do think it's time. I'll gladly go thru a 3,4 win season with Jones this year than watch Eli dip under the .500.

I do believe this would calm the fanbase down. I'll never throw in the towel and Im always gonna represent. #beatthebucs

He makes a very good point. How many of us have gotten using to losing by this point?

Respectfully disagree. This is an editorial - Ralph is giving his insight on how this will play out once the fans and media run with it. That the Giants know that - if they didnít before Geno, now for sure. So putting two and two together, he thinks this is happening.

I would wait until Tate, Shep get back. Don't want to kill his confidence throwing to what's left of our receiving corps at this point in time. Just my two cents.

Not much different than his Duke receivers nor the receivers he went 29-34 with in preseason

needs to make the decision based on who he thinks is best for the team moving forward. If he is waiting for John Mara's approval he will be gone soon. It is his job on the line. Another 0-2 start. We have an all world RB and we can't score 20 points. They should have let Manning go. This is a major rebuild.

I predicted he would go in after an 0-2 start and Eli looking like Eli. It's not even worth talking about anymore because the people that don't want him in are never going to cave. They sound like drug addicts "Just one more Olineman, Just one more RB, Just one more WR, Just 1 more game PLEASE". You would have an easier time explaining to a crackhead that his $10 would be better spent on a cheeseburger.

30 points wins that game. 30 points is not an impossibly high bar, but it is for Eli Manning. A top tier qb like Mahomes and that game was winnable.
I will always love Eli. But the era should be over.
Heisenberg : 9/17/2019 7:24 am : link
A good NFL QB can carry a bad team to competitiveness. Eli can't do that anymore. It's time to find the next one who can.

Also, he specifically may no longer be the best QB on the roster. Jones showed more dynamic playmaking ability than Eli has shown in years.

And he should start getting a bunch even if they stay with Eli.

Big Ben took every Wednesday off prior to the injury. They need to do the same with Eli if they want to keep marching him out there.

Besides, why would DG choose a QB in the first round of the draft if he didn't intend to use the kid?
