NFT: Recessed lighting for a sloped/vaulted ceiling

GMEN46 : 9/16/2019 10:16 pm
Anyone have any experience getting recessed lighting for a sloped ceiling? We want 4 inch lights, but not sure if I need to get special lights for a slopes ceiling. Also because they are so close to the roof I have read maybe I need to get them airtight because there is no room for insulation. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks
they make special recessed lights for sloped ceiling

which are longer on one side than the other. they probably also account for the lack of insulation.

Elco makes some, for example.
all i see is Reece

yes you need "IC" rated

which means they can be installed in contact with insulation which you will have in that vaulted ceiling...

depending on the pitch you may be stuck with 6"... the only true slope can is 6" because of how deep the can needs to be in order to compensate for the angle of the pitch (slope)

if you have a shallow slope you may be able to get away with a 4" gimbal type trim as long as the gimbal will adjust to level given the degree of pitch.

finally... if you must you can go some sort of eyeball which allows a greater degree of adjustment to compensate for your degree of slope but IMO they are the least desirable of your options because the eyeball part sticks out a little and a lot of people don't like how they look in the ceiling.

good Luck!
We have them in our family room.

We were warned by our home inspector to be careful using them when there is snow on the roof in that the heat they put off could cause ice dams.

We're down south so roof snow is not a problem, but the heat they throw is their own enemy; incandescent bulbs blow out a lot faster than those we have on flat ceilings. We went to LEDs on the slopes.
I was told LEDs

That are airtight rated should be ok in terms of the roof issues that you guys are mentioning, is that not the case?
