Troubling/Confusing offensive stats

weaverpsu : 9/17/2019 9:46 am
In Buffalo game:
According to Pro Football Focus, the Giants ran 39 of their 66 plays out of 11 personnel (1RB,1TE), with 46 coming out of shotgun. Nine of their 46 pass plays came off play action.

How can only 9 of 46 pass plays be play-action? So, not only are the Giants not giving Barkley enough carries, they are also failing to use him as a decoy in the passing game. Bravo!

And using so much 11 personnel vs 12 makes no sense to me when you have so many injuries at WR. Lastly, Eli is and has always been great at play action and pushing the ball deep and he is better suited under center for these plays I get it's West Coast, but you have to throw downfield occasionally.

Agree? Disagree?
9 play action plays is fine

they were running with decent success, so they mix in play action. I think people are getting a little too much into the weeds with stats. Defense needs to play better, the QB needs to make more plays. We don't have a deep WR threat at this point.....this is the bottom line.
If you watch the BUF / DAL LBs
V.I.G. : 9/17/2019 9:55 am : link
They were coached to favor the pass. They had depth at the snap and coached to pause an extra half second on the handoff. They were just telling Eli to beat them - and he couldn’t.
Two key problems right now

Lack of talent at WR, and Eli still can't consistently beat a Cover 2.

He hasn't been able to in years, it's why many have been disrespectful of his abilities.

Shouldn't there priority be to stop Barkley? I saw 7-8 guys in the box against Buffalo and we still ran it well. I don't understand post. If the LB's pause an extra half second, that just makes play-action work that much better...

Why do you think that is? He threw a rope to Fowler in between zone and it was dropped. Engram and Ellison seem like good candidates to run seam routes against cover 2...

Sunday. Eli missed multiple easy throws and isn't looking downfield in the slightest. He's not even waiting for the routes to develop anymore because he A) can't scramble and B) knows he has Saquon to check down to.

It is what it is, but it's really tough for anyone to argue that he should still be our quarterback. Let's move on with this.

the throw to Fowler was not a hard throw, he was wide open.
Problem is eli cant move

Shurmur likea play action roll outs and getting his qb on the move, every pass right now has to come out of shotgun..

There is no deceptiveness with this offense, i was saying to my friends afyer the first drive the play action should be wide open and it just doesnt work

He's had the receiver talent in the past, which suggests to me he's had confidence issues attacking the zones called against him. Lack of pass protection leads to a beating, which leads to more confidence issues.

The Giants offense in general has been one that's consistently boiled down by its opponents, and even itself, in recent years. If you can't beat the man in front of you, you're easier to shutdown.
We can break it down to stats or personnel
ryanmkeane : 9/17/2019 10:12 am : link
or whatever the flavor of the day is. Fact is we've been starting a declining, below average quarterback for 2 seasons where we should have been moved on by now.

The more days we wait on this, the more we continue to become the laughingstock of the NFL. It's a joke.
Shurmur wants the ball out quickly,
Section331 : 9/17/2019 10:15 am : link
so his offense is predicated on short passes, hoping to get receivers into open space. That doesn't lend itself to a lot of play action, as it makes the play take longer to develop. It is one reason why some recent HC's like McVay and LaFleur are moving back to deeper passing attacks. They both use a ton of PA.

That is my take too. I went to games for most of Eli's career, and the one thing you could count on was if he had single coverage outside, he was going to take a shot. Now it may be a product of Shurmur's offense, but there were a number of times where he had single coverage outside, but he went elsewhere.
Great thread

I was furious the Giants didn't try to take advantage of the successful runs on our second drive by using play action. The 11 personnel was another telegraph of our intentions to pass.

In addition, our pass plays lack variety and creativity. Every route is a short curl.

My biggest takeaway from the offense on Sunday was not that of poor talent or execution, but poor strategy and gameplan.

Which is a bad fit for Eli. I hate stubborn coaches who don't change their philosophy to match the players they have. Now Eli is done. Let's see what happens
