why did they bring Eli back?

peteschweaty : 9/17/2019 10:29 am
if you only let him play two games?

We all knew the ways this could play out. Sadly, 0-2 meant ... this.

Not surprising.
They decided before the draft to bring him back
Jay on the Island : 9/17/2019 10:31 am : link
If they didn't bring Eli back that would obviously reveal that they were going Jones at 6.
Two reasons
Jolly Blue Giant : 9/17/2019 10:31 am : link
They may have underestimated how good jones would be this early. Also, insurance, if jones was behind, and the team was good. Then Eli plays and you try to make a playoff run.
The Giants need time to see if Jones is the real deal
GiantBlue : 9/17/2019 10:31 am : link
or if we are going to be looking at a QB in next year's draft......
Hopes of being more competitive
Bramton1 : 9/17/2019 10:31 am : link
When they decided to stick with Eli this year, they didn't know Tate would get suspended. They didn't know Shepard would get concussed. They didn't realize the shitstorm the defense would be so far.
Simple - they thought the team would be better
Eli Wilson : 9/17/2019 10:31 am : link
It's obvious through two games that it is not. The defense is going to struggle all year, so might as well make the switch now.
Same reason why DG signed Beckham and then trades him.
penkap75 : 9/17/2019 10:32 am : link
He doesn't know what the fuck he is doing.
Francessa is right about how directionless DG is.
You have to base decisions on what you know at the time.

is a foolish price to pay to hide intentions at #6. I won't buy that.
Because they prioritized Eli's feelings...

Or to give them the benefit of the doubt, their fondness for Eli Manning caused them to take an EXTREMELY kind view of his play and thought that with a revamped OL we'd have a chance at making the playoffs.
They thought they'd

Eli on the roster was idiotic
averagejoe : 9/17/2019 10:33 am : link
He should have been released the day they drafted Jones. That is what I said two seconds after the Jones pick. And Eli as mentor I'm sure is a fantasy. I doubt Eli has said ten words to this kid. When DG did not select Allen at six this season was doomed. Let the kid lose and learn. There was no place for Eli on this roster.
I think the Fan base and Media played into this

This. Gettleman is clueless without a plan. They now have close to 40 million in cap tied up between Manning and Beckham and neither are playing. Hard to build a good team that way....

I'm afraid this is correct.

I wouldn't have a problem with blind loyalty wanting to give Eli one last season to say goodbye, ride out the end of his contract for the transition to Jones to be a veteran presence on the bench.

I'm afraid that the Giants inability to scout themselves is so bad, though, that they actually thought they had a chance of winning something this year.

You can’t say this. I think Eli should have been replaced. But Geno Smith was not the better QB
To a lot of people
Gman11 : 9/17/2019 10:48 am : link
and many here, Eli's troubles were from a lousy OL. The team strengthened the OL, so it follows that they believed that Eli would play well. Keep in mind that they were not sure what they would get in the draft at the time they had to make a decision on Eli. And, having a rookie QB learn from a two-time Super Bowl MVP is not unheard of.

I think waiting longer to make the switch would have been the wrong move. We've seen Eli through two games and, while his stats aren't bad, his effectiveness is. The third down conversion rate is terrible.

+1
since 2011 this team has been run

like the Cleveland Browns....

Gettlemen and Shurmur are NOT the answer and we wasted 2 years with Macadoodie as HC.

I would rather they fired Reese and kept TC until a solid GM and young stud fiery HC was ready.
Decisions based on feelings
JonC : 9/17/2019 10:50 am : link
over what their eyes should tell them, seems to be the case.

Their self-scouting seems off target, and they're making decisions based on optimism and hope.

$40M in cap space for Eli + OB, and neither will be playing.
I think they told Eli, listen we got you an offensive line perform
Zeke's Alibi : 9/17/2019 10:50 am : link
and you get to keep your job. This was all about giving Eli one more chance and it only effectively cost about 8 million in cap space. Eli is a professional so I doubt you see any issues with him holding the clip board except for the 100 shots a game we get of it now.

If the Giants
MookGiants : 9/17/2019 10:53 am : link
Intentionally tried to fuck up the handling of Eli’s decline, they still couldnt have fucked it up as bad as they actually did.

Anyone who was on board with bringing Eli back in 2019 needs to be fired. Maybe it was all John Mara, but if Gettleman actually wanted Eli on the team then he needs to go.

There was zero upside for any of the involved parties in bringing Eli back. It didnt benefit Eli, didnt benefit the Giants, didnt benefit the fans, the team. No one.

Shame on the Giants for doing this to Eli

This was not a knock on Eli. It's not his job to coach rookies. I'm sure Eli will help him prepare now that he is sitting. You missed the point.

They couldn't run naked at QB into the draft and they certainly weren't going to cut him in the middle of the offseason which would be an even uglier divorce than with Simms. 23M is a lot of money to pay for some draft deception and respect though, they should have made the move before the season and replaced him with a cheap bridge QB.
