Ernie Accorsi (2): "Eli Manning gave me the two greatest moments of my time in the National Football League. He will always be very special to me as will his two Super Bowl Championships."
No Bert Jones

reference? Ernie's slipping.
If Accorsi
Matt in SGS : 9/17/2019 12:19 pm : link
doesn't mention Bert Jones somehow I will be gravely disappointed.

Thanks for having the balls to bring him here.

Worked out to the tune of 2 championships.
I had no idea
Pork Chop : 9/17/2019 12:19 pm : link
that Ernie was involved with Unitas
A Unitas Reference Though

Unitas reference >> Bert Jones reference
Who do you think took over for Unitas?
HomerJones45 : 9/17/2019 12:22 pm : link
Bert Jones.
Oh my god Ernie
moespree : 9/17/2019 12:22 pm : link
A Johnny Unitas reference in everything and anything he says.
Surprised he didn't throw an Elway reference in there as well

Johnny Unitas, LOL

Ernie doesn't work in the shadows with Bert Jones. He usually says the man's name directly. He's not Voldemort.

LOL
EC is right about Bert Jones.
After a while, Eisen probably just laid the phone down and walked away

I was actually thinking of Unitas before I read this
Dr. D : 9/17/2019 12:33 pm : link
in terms of this type of thing happening, even to the greats like Montana and Unitas. So I understand why Ernie mentioned him.
I'll see if I can track him down

He had a conviction on Manning and it paid off.

Big stones!
Accorsi gave us...
bw in dc : 9/17/2019 12:49 pm : link
Eli.

And 15 years later he gave us Dave Gettleman.

Do they cancel each other out? ;)
It's Amazing To Me
Bernie : 9/17/2019 12:50 pm : link
the amount of abuse Accorsi takes on this site. He built a two time Super Bowl winner; Reese just took all of the credit.
A Very Difficult Time

For Ernie? Did I read that right? Is that perhaps why he pushed DG on the Giants?

arniefez : 9/17/2019 1:03 pm : link
Couldn't agree more. Ernie should be held in the same regard by Giant fans as George Young. They both built 2 time Super Bowl winners. Ernie actually had guts and the force of personality to ignore Wellington and trade for Eli.

Ernie drafted Tuck, Osi, Snee, Diehl, Webster, Jacobs, Bradshaw etc. signed O'Hara, Seubert (UDFA) Plax, Mckenzie and Pierce etc. as FA's.

I'd rate GY slightly above him for the 80's but Ernie is one of the most important Giants ever.
I'm one of a few Giants fans who doesn't think Acorsi is a genius
GeofromNJ : 9/17/2019 1:04 pm : link
He could have drafted Roelisberger instead of drafting Rivers and then trading him along with the following year's 1st round pick for Manning. With Ben, I doubt the Giants have a sub .500 record and they would have had just as many SB appearances, if not more.
GeofromNJ
arniefez : 9/17/2019 1:16 pm : link
You think Roethlisberger would have done well in NY? At the time in 2004 I agreed with you. 15 years later I think the Giants made the right choice.

Do you think Roethlisberger has been surrounded with better talent since 2012 than Eli? If they changed teams in 2012 do you think the Giants would have had the Steelers record and the Steelers the Giants record? I do not.

Eli got old. He lost his magic at least 2 maybe even more years ago. But the Giants as an organization badly failed him with the GM, coaching (and that includes late career Tom Coughlin who lost his fastball much more than Eli did in his last three Giants years) and most importantly the talent around him.
Fun Fact about Daniel Jones
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 9/17/2019 1:27 pm : link
Only drafted because Ernie thought he was Bert's grandson.
Ernie didn't draft Bradshaw
RollBlue : 9/17/2019 1:28 pm : link
Reese did, along with Ross, Smith, Alford, Boss, DeOssie and Bradshaw. He later on got JPP (gutsy pick at the time), Nicks, Manningham and Cruz while drafting late in rounds. Ernie's stamp on SB46 isn't great (outside of Manning). Who was the head scout during the EA years????????????????

That's a lot of assumptions.

That's a lot of assumptions.

Compare the Giants/Eli record vs. Steelers/Ben record since 2004. No assumption needed, IMO.
Drafting Ben would have been the socially responsible thing to do
Bill L : 9/17/2019 2:03 pm : link
Getting him to NYC would have started the #MeTwo movement a decade and a half earlier.

You don't think that maybe - just maybe - the offensive talent has been different for the two of them?

you Mr. Accorsi for the greatest QB in the history of this franchise.
GeofromNJ
arniefez : 9/17/2019 3:48 pm : link
Each team has won 2 Super Bowls. Pittsburgh has had by far the better roster and by far the better coaching. Your premiss is very flawed and we haven't even discussed what it would have been like to have a rapist playing QB for the Giants. Ben is very lucky he was in Pittsburgh. No way he gets away with it in NYC.
EA was the PR Director

for the Colts when Unitas was traded. He had to deal with the PR end of it but it wasn't his decision to make the trade.

Was a really good player. He kept getting hurt because he was tough and hung in there.

Ben's also probably serving a life sentence on Rikers after he sexually assaulted Lord knows how many women if he's living in the NYC area.
Accorsi was a good not great GM but to his credit he adapted
Eric on Li : 9/17/2019 10:10 pm : link
when Coughlin got to town (I think they were a good combo) and he obviously made the ballsy move for Eli. "you can never have too many pass rushers" etc.

For a long time he neglected the OL but then he splurged on Snee + McKenzie. Osi and Tuck were good picks. Kiwanuka too before he got hurt and yanked back and forth between LB/DE. OL and DL were key to the first SB obviously and they weren't just his players, but areas that came to define his philosophy.
