NGT: Do we see a new trend -Players forcing their way out?

figgy2989 : 9/17/2019 12:54 pm
I know this is not another Eli or Daniel Jones thread, but I contemplating starting this last night when news came down about the Fitzpatrick trade.

I always despised the NBA where Diva players tried to force their way out of town because they didn't like the team and or city. Now I know there are times where it comes down solely on the money, but with the trade yesterday of Fitzpatrick and Ramsey trade on the horizon, do you see this becoming a "thing" in the NFL? You are even hearing rumors of Jamal Adams not being happy and possibly wanting out.

For as long as I could remember, what made the NFL so special is you rarely saw trades during the season. I really hope the NFL doesn't turn into the NBA where if a player doesn't like his situation that he cries to the media and tells his agent to get the team to trade him.

What say you BBI?
Well, it's interesting

I'm worried teams that start out 0-2 or 0-3 will have more players wanting out. This will, in turn, lead to less Cinderella teams like the '07 NY Giants.
I always felt the lack of trades

was because the deadline was so early in the season. After they pushed it back a couple weeks we started to see a few more deals, but even still most teams are still in the postseason hunt (at least mathematically) by the time the deadline hits in late October.

yes, they are taking a cue from their NBA bretheran

getting out and going to play where you want.
Yes

I think this will be the new way and I'm surprised players didn't start doing this earlier.
The NFL

is not going to exist in 10 years, not they way we know it now....and you won't want to watch anyway.

I hate all the directions the NFL is headed
There May Be an Uptick

In in-season trades, but I don't ever see it rising to the level of NBA or MLB. It would more likely be dealt with in the offseason. If for no other reason than you have to learn an entire new system potentially, which is challenging to do in a short period of time. MLB and NBA are far more in-season trade friendly in that regard.
But teams are enabling it
figgy2989 : 9/17/2019 1:02 pm : link
I get it, they have a malcontent who wants out and they are trying to get max value. However, by these players saying they want out and the teams going ahead and trading them, it sends a message to other players that if they don't like their situation, just ask to be traded.
The nature of the sport makes it difficult to say nowadays

"Run through a brick wall (especially for this bad team), but I have no intention of paying your ass next year or in two years."
It's not new
Gman11 : 9/17/2019 1:02 pm : link
It's just that there wasn't as many media outlets in the past reporting it. A player didn't have a twitter or facebook account to proclaim to the entire world that they wanted to be traded. Fran Tarkenton basically forced his trade back to the Vikings in '72.

Didn't Tarkenton force the trade in the off season though? I am talking more about in season.
New trend?

Eli did this years ago
NFL players want the sort of power they have in the NBA...
Dunedin81 : 9/17/2019 1:15 pm : link
which would take a huge chunk out of the NFL's bottom line because even the best players don't have the stature that the elite talents in the NBA do and because NFL fandom, even in the age of fantasy football, is large team-based.
I was thinking the same thing with the Antonio Brown situation
Zeke's Alibi : 9/17/2019 1:21 pm : link
and the NFL can't be happy because it has opened a whole can of worms. NFL teams are so scared of controversy in the media all you have to do is start yapping and you'll get what you desire. There is also the issue that there are a bunch of teams that are a clusterfuck early in the season and players can see the writing on the wall.

I don't really blame the Dolphins guys. Putting your body on the line week in and week out for a team that is tanking has to be tough.
Look at it this way...
shockeyisthebest8056 : 9/17/2019 1:25 pm : link
would you rather be Antonio Brown or Hakeem Nicks? Brown is a dick who's never won anything, but has gotten paid whereas Nicks won a title, but had a shortened career and never made "big" NFL 2nd contract money.

Some guys aren't going to willingly expose themselves to that risk quietly.
I think this...
Ryan : 9/17/2019 1:28 pm : link
..is part of the "culture" issue that Gettleman claims wants to try and resolve. The idea that if you're a talented player, the team is struggling and it's taking the shine off your product, that you can just distance yourself from it or push your way out. Thus it's hard to get out of the basement unless you go the instant gratification route throwing resources everywhere.

I think the added wrinkle that the NFL has is the physical toll....a few years getting banged up playing for a doormat can seem like an eternity.
I think we have to see how many teams follow

what Miami is doing - trying to lose for a better draft pick and the NFL is a league of followers.

The first thing to consider is that football the NFL is not basketball the NBA. NBA players are pampered prima donnas with fully guaranteed contracts and while not a strong union a much stronger union than NFL players.

NFL players all know exactly what they are signing up for. Mosty are playing literally play to play with little or no guaranteed money. NFL players literally put their bodies/long term health on the line every week. I think it's more than fair to ask out if you're in an organization that's trying to lose.

If you're referring to Ramsey this is nothing new he and Coughlin have been battling since Coughlin got there.
Jeff George, Elway, Eli, Randy Moss

are some players who forced a trade in the past.

Let's hope that the NFL doesn't continue to allow bad conduct by a player to allow a trade.
players are now emboldend

attendance is down, get woke, go broke. This is a business and a tough game, feelings/attitudes are entering the game. Not good for the future. You see college stands filled to capacity and NFL stands at less the size with empty seats.

I do believe that the NFL could help themselves by setting a salary averages and metrics to avoid cap killer players like Newton and others. A guy passing a football with a 100m+ contract, seriously?
