Eli Rant...

Thatís Gold, Jerry : 9/17/2019 1:52 pm
Like many of us, I have been an Eli fan from day one. Moreover, it is not just his play that I like, it is the type of person he is. Not once, and he has had plenty of opportunity, has he ever thrown anyone publicly under the bus. Not his offensive line, not players like Beckham nor coaches like McAdoo or GMs like Reese. All of whom failed to either protect him or provide the players necessary for him to succeed.

I've been around long enough to see the Giants at their best and the Giants at their worst. This latest period rivals the Giants in the late 60's and 70's...a shit show if there ever was one. Frankly, if I was Eli and I saw John Mara in the hall, I'd punch him in the mouth. If anyone is responsible for this mess, it is John Mara. Mara has allowed this team to deteriorate to the point where they are a joke. I've heard broadcasters here in Ottawa, on the radio, calling the Giants a joke and when it gets that bad, you know what a mess you have.

I keep thinking that the Giants are supposed to be this great, proud, classy organization which is devoted to winning yet, in my lifetime, I have witnessed three of the longest periods of ineptitude I can recall for any team. 17 years from 1964-1980, 1991-1997 and now this latest period. Since 1964, out of 55 or so NFL seasons, the Giants have had exactly 17 winning seasons...about 31%. We have made the playoffs only 14 times in all those years.

My friends, that is NOT NOT NOT a good organization. That is mediocre by any definition of the word. Yes, we have won 4 Super Bowls but in terms of being a consistent playoff contender, we are TERRIBLE! And so, after 9 straight seasons of .500 or better, we screwed the situation up so badly that our two time SB MVP quarterback has had only one winning season since. Sure, some of that is on Eli but I would venture to say 90% of that blame is on the front office which provided this team with virtually nothing during that time.

So, here we are, a day I knew was coming but somehow I thought the Giants would be classy enough to let this play out a little longer and if there was no hope, fine, let's get the kid ready. But the team right now is a MESS...the offense, with an absolute ALL WORLD player, uses him as if he were 39 instead of 22 and gives him less touches than many average NFL running backs. The play calling is equally bad. The defense could not stop you or me...has guys playing against their strengths (Baker) and seems to have no clue how to get better other than playing the kid.

I feel sorry for Daniel Jones and I have high hopes for him. But I suspect he will get killed. I have supported DG here on BBI but I have withdrawn that support now. As for Shurmur, to me he is McAdoo II, one of those guys who might be a good coordinator but does not have a clue as a head coach. His lifetime record as a head coach is now 15-36...one of those wins coming against a terrible Giants team in 2015 as an interim head coach.

I am sure we will see Mara, later today or tomorrow, make some political speech supporting his coach. But this guy needs to be removed as head of the franchise. He screwed the fans by keeping Reese and letting Tom go...it appears his replacements are no better. To quote Tom "Eli, this is not your fault"

Is an old school player. Not like the current ďme me meĒ NFL players on a lot of teams. He would never ruin his public image and is a true professional and future Hall of famer.
dont worry about Eli
mdc1 : 9/17/2019 1:59 pm : link
he will be on TV next year if not playing for someone else.
I would argue that they gave him 2 + years
larryflower37 : 9/17/2019 1:59 pm : link
Because they couldn't figure out how to do it more respectfully
There is never a right way to do this and the Giants had no clue how to say goodbye.
Look at Montana in SF or Marino in Miami.

It's never clean.
Coughlin only made the playoffs once in last 7 years
Vanzetti : 9/17/2019 2:00 pm : link
Yet, many Giants fans still think it was a mistake to let him go

So, it is not just ownership but the fan base. Look at the reaction when Rli was benched? In football terms, it was obviously the right move. But the fans and media actually vetoed it. What kind of organization does that? A losing one

So Mara has to rethink the way he does business. I believe he is s good man but you have to be able to adapt to changes in the game
So two games to switch snít classy, butttt
V.I.G. : 9/17/2019 2:03 pm : link
Six games would have been Ok? 8? 10?
I appreciate your rant
Dinger : 9/17/2019 2:04 pm : link
Most of it I agree with. Giants ownership will not change unless the Mara's want it to. They are to ingrained into the NFL. And honestly, there are worse owners. Ask us Islanders fans. Ask Mets Fans Knicks Fans JETS fans and hell, if you ask a Yankees fan bet you'd here a healthy dose of them disparage the Steinbrenners.

What I'm trying to determine is if this is a 'desperation' move by Shurmur to deflect away from poor game planning/play calling or is Eli really the issue in this offense?

Either way, as long term Giants fans, this to is a condition of our affliction and we'll have to get past this 'bump in the road'. Good luck Daniel Jones.
ask the JAX fans

2+ years ago, Eli-led NYG was 11-5 and in the playoffs.
Since then they're 8-27, which includes the Green Bay boat trip & Hail Mary playoff debacle - a loss that was not on Eli.

I get it, and maybe it is "time"; but the way most people talk about Eli you'd think he hasn't done anything since 2011.

The blame game...
Photoguy : 9/17/2019 2:23 pm : link
plenty to go around. A lot goes to the drafting/acquisitions from 2011-2017. A lot goes to bad coaching from EVERYONE from Coughlin on down the line, and yeah, Eli gets his share too. I just hope Jones gets more help than Eli did his last 7 or 8 years.
I'm a big Eli fan and always
RollBlue : 9/17/2019 2:28 pm : link
will be, but if you can see that he's been a big part of the problem the last 3-4 years, there's not much to say. Very mediocre play combined with a big cap hit, not a good recipe for success. And I still contend that the constant questions about the QB play brings the rest of the team down, we shall see.
I don't think you're credible.

I really don't understand what people think Jones is going to accomplish. No dig on him but this team stinks, from the GM on down to the water boy. There are no receivers for this guy to throw to. Many at the game last week testified to the fact that there was no separation from the receivers.

Eli got stuck first with a rotten offensive line and than a rotten offensive philosophy, and finally rotten receivers. Yes, he is limited in some respects but those limits have existed since he was a rookie. It wasn't age related. The team just lost it's direction. And now the defense sucks!!! (His fault as well I guess.)

Switching to Jones now strikes me as "Hail Mary" pass by the GM and coaching staff. It'll have the same probability of success.
17 winning seasons?

Really?

Man, I didnít realize I was watching such chronically bad football all these years.

Thanks for your rant. Sadly, I agree with you.
If anything DG screwed the pouch
BigBlueDownTheShore : 9/17/2019 2:37 pm : link
He over right the perceived wrong when Eli was benched. The time to cut ties was at the end of that season and do a complete rebuild. Instead we just prolonged the band aid ripping for a year and 2 games.

I supported Eli throughout his career, and I love the memories Eli has brought and will always love Eli and his career.

If anything they ruined his goodbye by prolonging it way to long.

You're right. Everything since then has gone swimmingly. Marked improvement.

For those people, like say, you, who kept saying it "couldn't get any worse", well, yes, it got worse.

It only got worse because they didnít rip the band aide off quick enough. The pattern is just taking half measure after half measure. Everyone should have left in one fowl swoop. Instead it got worse and worse by doing things so slowly.

QBs need reps to get better. Playing DJ now gives him 14 games to see different looks, different situations and play with no expectations. He has nothing to lose, no pressure, just learn. if you dont play him this year then he misses out on that and goes into next season without facing live bullets.

Basically it was a bad idea to keep Eli around. when DJ was drafted this should have been taken care of in the offseason. Its a no win situation right now for Eli. We started 0-2 and he needed to play great to keep playing and he was just average. Neither game was close, the D was pathetic but the O was not good enough and did not score enough. It was going to end poorly for Eli no matter what but all the drama would have been over.

Now its a debate over how it was handled. I think Mara is ultimately the one to blame. he was so worried about how we were going to pass the baton and now we are at this point and its a shitty way for a career to end and a new one to begin. I honestly think the Giants should release Eli rather than have him sit on the bench. Let him find one of the many teams that need a QB and let him choose where he wants to go. That would be the best send off at this point and close the book in a positive way. Have a great press conference thanking him and wish him well as he looks for a new team.

You are right that they needed to tear it down and rebuild. We finally started that process last year into this year.

What I find funny is that most fans were clamoring for the team to just blow it up and rebuild, but now that it's happening everyone is even more pissed off and wants to fire the GM and the coach that have been charged with overseeing the rebuilding of the team.
I agree
Blueblue : 9/17/2019 3:13 pm : link
I agree with op. The front office failed Eli and wasted a lot of good football on a front office that had no clue how to build a team.

With that said I felt DJ should start once we are mathematically eliminated. It's too lat for that but I think they can still do Eli right. As long as the game means nothing let him start the final game of the season to say good by to the NY fans.
So to summarize
Les in TO : 9/17/2019 3:16 pm : link
Your rant:

Bad- Mara Reese Gettleman Beckham McAdoo offensive line

Good - Manning and Coughlin

If Jones is able to turn this offense and team around it will be interesting to revisit this rant.
I agree with the OP too, and
Red Dog : 9/17/2019 3:43 pm : link
Jones is not going to turn this team around by himself because the defense just simply stinks, and Jones doesn't play defense. Or coach it either.

That said, I hope Jones does well and that DG can build a Super Bowl winning team around him. They have a start with Barkley, Rosas, and some of the linemen on both sides of the ball who have joined the team since DG took over. But there is a very long way to go yet.

Bottom line - this is a sad, sad day for a team that utterly failed one of its best-ever players in the flower of his career, Eli Manning.

Who at wr did he have to throw to this past sunday? No OBJ(traded) no SS (concussion) no Golden Tate (suspension)
no speedy rookie Slayton (hammy). All the healthy recievers
were practice squad caliber.

Itís not that itís happening, itís the way it has happened. We wasted so much time and energy on this while Eli debacle. They should have cut him 2 years ago when Gettleman came in and wiped the slate clean at that point. Except here we are wasting money on Eli and paying for OBJ to play in Cleveland. All the funds in both players could have been used this year somewhere to us closer to competing. But again half measures and righting that wrong prolonged this whole debacle.

The fact that you are stating Eli led the giants to 11 and 5 a few years ago shows how clueless many are. Eli was not good that year either and the great defense got them to the playoffs. That is Fact
