Read the reviews of the first two games of 2007

Les in TO : 9/17/2019 3:59 pm
I’m not comparing this defense to the 2007 defense and this is not Bettcher’s first year but if you go back and see the first two games of the 2007 season there are a lot of parallels to this year’s version where there are significant changes across the board

The Giants gave up 80 points to the Cowboys and Packers and had no pass rush or coverage ability and frequent miscommunications . We all know how that turned out.

There were some glimmers of hope in the second half of last weeks game on defense and it’s still very early on in the season. Again this team is not making a super bowl run but maybe with a spark on offense with Jones, the defense will have more time to rest and regroup rather than dealing with three and outs like they did for most of the first two weeks. And maybe the light bulb turns on for some of the younger players on D like it did with Tuck Osi Webster and Ross that year.
Yes

But that team had at least THREE dominating pass rushers. This team has none.

we gonna parallel 2007 to whatever current year we start 0-2?
We also had

Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer.

Oh and Strahan, Tuck and Osi.

Stop it. Please.

ZERO simularaties. Zeri
We do not have

Strahan, Tuck, Osi, Cofield, Pierce, or Mitchell.

Compared to todays team? Not comparable.

offense also scored 35 points in week 1 v dallas, so even with the loss, there was some reason for cautious optimism.

is that you, Les in TO, being all hopeful?
The 2007 team had proven talent
GIANTS128 : 9/17/2019 4:15 pm : link
was more of a question of why they were letting up all those points...much different then the present situation.
Definitely
Les in TO : 9/17/2019 4:16 pm : link
Different talent and schemes on both offense and defense compared to 2007. The point is you can’t give up on a season completely after two games. Maybe Baker Ximenes Lawrence and Carter find their groove. Maybe Jones will light a fire on this team and it will reverberate with longer time of possession on offense, giving the D a chance to rest and strategize
people forget that the 2007 Cowboys and Packers
bluepepper : 9/17/2019 4:17 pm : link
were really good teams and had great offenses though at that point in the season people didn't really know it. Both ended up 13-3 and ranked top five in offense so the losses weren't quite as horrific as everyone thought at the time.

Maybe the Cowboys will go 13-3 this year but the Bills are likely an 8-9 win team at best and that mostly because of their defense.
The 2007 team was coming off a 2-6 finish to the 2006 season
Mayhap : 9/17/2019 4:29 pm : link
Their best offensive player retired, their best defender flirted with retirement while he skipped training camp, and the jury was still out on the QB and the coach. I imagine some fans had already decided that Coughlin was a bad hire - a retread that ownership was comfortable with rather than a young up and comer that the stodgy Jints central was too scared to pick (sound familiar?). I doubt too many people were talking about how much talent the Giants had until they proved it on the field.

It would be interesting to see a snapshot of BBI before that season and during the first 2 (and a half) weeks of that season to see what fans were saying about the team at the time.
It is an insult

to compare this group to 2007. That was a fucking team. That road loss to Dallas was the only road loss of the season. The heart, determination and will it took to go on that run through arctic Lambeau and to take down the best team ever was an immortal run. The physicality that team had on the defensive front and with the run game was good too. This team could put 13 players out on D and O and not match that.

This group is soft physically and mentally and would be rolled by the 2007 Giants by five scores. That team had a real HC coach. What an amazing coaching job that was with that team. This team is sorely lacking in the HC department.

But you knew absolutely none of that after the first two games.

that is true

but, I don't think this team will be the 2007 Giants. That is for sure.

Are you kidding me? They were in the playoffs the year before, almost pulling out a win in Philly, and won the division two years before.

There is absolutely no parallel between this team and that team other than starting 0-2. None.
This Team Has NO Playmakers

on defense. 2007 team -- Strahan, Osi, Tuck, Pierce. Not much of a comparison.

Not kidding at all. They backed into the playoffs the year before with an 8-8 record after going 2-6 in the final 8 games and then their best offensive player retired. You're kidding yourself if you think ANYONE had any confidence in that team's talent, their coaching or their ability to make a Superbowl run after the first two games of the season.

There is absolutely no parallel between what this team has shown so far and what the 2007 team was in retrospect aside from the 0-2 start. And it is highly probable that the 2019 Giants will be a much, much, much worse team than the 2007 Giants. But what 2007 should have taught us is that you really don't know what you have after two games.

Confidence
Les in TO : 9/17/2019 5:24 pm : link
Can be contagious. If the offense starts producing consistently the defense may be able to play with more swagger.

I don’t think this team is playoffs bound. But I also don’t think we can write it off.
Right Now

This looks more like the 2004 Giants post Warner than the 2007 Giants. If for nothing else, this coach accomplished nothing close to what Coughlin did prior to his arrival with the Giants. Coughlin had a nice run with the Jaguars prior to his dismissal. Shurmur has shown so far to be nothing more than a solid offensive coordinator.
I did see defensive progress

Against Buffalo
But Bettcher is proving to be an enormous mistake

We’ve had plenty of chances to make the 0-2 comp to 2007. I pray next year we can at least be 1-1! This stuff is getting old.
