How feasible is a Solder to NE deal?

DanMetroMan : 9/17/2019 5:10 pm
They just lost their starting LT for "at least" 8 weeks per Field Yates
Not
Jon in NYC : 9/17/2019 5:11 pm : link
feasible for cap reasons
Why?
mittenedman : 9/17/2019 5:11 pm : link
The Offensive Line is playing very well right now and offense might actually be very good with Jones at QB. The season ain't over yet.
Why would we trade Solder?

personally think the season is over, and Solder's 2020 cap hit is enormous. 19.5 million per Sportract (he'll also be 32). I think the Giants should be adding as many picks as possible.
They are starting a rookie

QB this week, the future franchise QB, and you are looking at trading the starting LT without a viable replacement?

Think about that for two seconds...
who do you propose replacing him with?

million for an "okay" LT on a likely rebuilding team seems really, really high for me if the Patriots are willing to give up value.
If we didn't have a rookie QB I'd do it, but alas we do.
Zeke's Alibi : 9/17/2019 5:15 pm : link
I also think they want to invest some midround picks on tackle next year ideally. Developing someone to take over the LT and RT spots.
PFF
DanMetroMan : 9/17/2019 5:15 pm : link
gives Solder a 74.1 for the first 2 weeks which is identical to the 74.1 he had last year when everyone on here said he sucked so I'm kind of confused what is different other than being concerned for Jones?

Again. They are starting the future franchise QB this week and down the line. So you want to take his blind side protection.
The season is not over
Four Aces : 9/17/2019 5:16 pm : link
But even if you thought it was, who's our LT tackle next year?
Do we simply force a LT pick in the 1st rd? That doesn't always work out as history has shown.

Fair enough. I think Jones is really the only X factor here. Solder is "okay". He's not 19.5 million "okay" if someone were to give up picks. We need picks, many of them.

I'm not a hater but I'd be stunned to see this team win more than 6 games. If I'm wrong and they compete for the playoffs I'll give my mea culpa.

they did a poor job protecting Eli the past decade. Protecting your QB should be priority #1. I understand the cap hit. I bet he restructures, but still super expensive. At least they have a lot of cap money coming up.

Doesn't matter, you don't get your Frachise Rookie QB killed.. Dear god, I am keeping a list of all the posters bashing the Jones move, talking stupid shit dumping our LT etc., just to make sure none of you come on here bragging how great this is or that is... Give Jones a chance to play before fucking trying to undermine him by getting rid of Solder, in season with no viable replacement!

To be clear, I did not say anything about Daniel Jones. I said Solder is "okay" and expensive and aging. Our LT is not a special player. That much is factual. As noted "everyone" on BBI said Solder sucked last year, well PFF has him playing at the exact same level through (yes, only 2) games. So which is it?
Pats
DanMetroMan : 9/17/2019 5:22 pm : link
JUST added Newhouse. Normal team might be fucked. Not them.

Patriots placed LT Isaiah Wynn on injured reserve with a toe/foot injury.
It has been reported Wynn is dealing with turf toe. He is ineligible to practice for six weeks and can't return to game action for eight weeks. That means Week 11 in Philadelphia would be his earliest possible return date. It is the last thing the 2018 first-rounder needed after missing his entire rookie year with a torn Achilles' tendon. Journeyman and Week 2 signee Marshall Newhouse is the next man up at left tackle. It's a problem for a team that doesn't have many of them.

PFF grades

Solder 74.4
Zeitler 67
Halapio 60.7
Remmers 58.6
Hernandez 73.5

Talk about low standards around here.

NYG is officially in rebuild mode now, so try to keep up. LT next season is Gates. Or Eric Smith. Or somebody's waiver. It doesn't matter anyway. Eli is benched, problem fixed.

I'm not a believer in PFF but they just ranked the Giants oline 4th in pressures allowed verse expactations. The eye test tells me this offensive line has been better than league average.

They JUST restructured his contract to free up cap space this season. If they were to trade him, that would create an additional $5M of dead money.

It wouldn't quite be the same as "we didn't sign him to trade him" but it wouldn't fundamentally be completely different, either.

Three questions;

1) Can the Giants retrieve a functioning tackle plus a decent asset in a trade?
2) If not, is there a functioning tackle on the roster?
3) Are the cap ramifications to the Giants advantage?

Say if the Pats traded Newhouse and a 2nd round pick for Solder.

If I'm reading it correctly it would save the Giants somewhere around 4M in cap space this year but cause dead money of 6.6M in 2019 and 13M in 2020.

It would free up 6.5M in 2020 and 20.5M in 2021.

Giants are slated to have $65 Million in Cap Space next year and can get $21 million more cutting Jenkins and Ogletree. We have no one to play left tackle. You do not trade him as you prepare to start jones. Also he'd be $13 million in dead cap space next year.

Even if Giants draft a stud T in the draft in the spring the likelihood of them starting at LT right away next year is remote.

Because NE knows that if they bring NS back and put him back under the spell of Scarnecchia, he'll turn back into Tony Boselli-lite.
The Solder deal was ridiculous from the start.

The idea we needed to create the highest paid LT for an older slightly above avg player on a team in desperate need of a deep restructuring was comical over a year ago.

The concept that we would unwind it now with no serviceable alternative, and expose our rookie QB to MORE DURESS is gross negligence.

Him knowing their system, the Giants eating a big part of the guaranteed money, and average being an order of magnitude better than the likely alternative, might get a the Giants a valuable pick.
