NFT: Better career Eli or Ewing?

DanMetroMan : 9/17/2019 7:41 pm
Which career would you prefer to have given the choice? The rings or the top “50” greatest player ever status?

2 SB’s, didn’t melt in big moments,

it’s Eli, hands down.
Eli

And dont think it's close.
I'd rather have the rings
jcn56 : 9/17/2019 7:45 pm : link
Ewing was the first guy I thought of after today's news - so many greats, so few careers with happy endings.
Rings in a heartbeat.
Mad Mike : 9/17/2019 7:45 pm : link
Trent Dilfer or Ewing? I'll take the hall of fame career over the ring amidst an otherwise pedestrian career.
Professional sports is all about winning championships

Sure every fan wants to enjoy more winning in between championship runs but is still about the goal each team begins each season with, to win it all.

Eli won the big ones
justafan : 9/17/2019 7:50 pm : link
and did it against the Michael Jordan of his day, Tom Brady and Belicheck. I say that as someone who amassed a collection of 50 Patrick Ewing cards as a kid. Still, have them in a closet somewhere. I was so into Ewing that I stupidly traded a Jordan card for multiple Ewing cards.
At their respective best Ewing was a more dominant presence
djm : 9/17/2019 7:51 pm : link
But timing matters. I don’t think it’s overstated. Eli saved his best for when it really mattered. Maybe that’s unfair to Ewing who virtually dominated night in night out and maybe Ewing could only do so much, but Eli did shit in January that many of the all time greats, in any sport, could only dream about.

Apples and oranges really. One was an all time great compared to his peers and to history while the other put together two all time runs. Two is a big number.
....
BrettNYG10 : 9/17/2019 7:55 pm : link
Eli might make the HOF (I'm not as certain as others that he will get in) and won two SB MVP's. It's not like he was a passenger.
I'd rather be Marino than Dilfer, for example.

Ewing...

was a better player at his sport/position than Eli.

I agree he doesn't have the brass, but Ewing won an NCAA title (and was an absolute force unseen since Bill Russell) and he has a gold medal for the Olympics.

I disagree. There are certainly players who would take personal accomplishments over rings. I'm wondering if anyone on here would do such a thing. But "top 5 best NBA player ever" (not that Ewing was) but no rings, or multiple rings but "good career" etc.

But Jeter has the numbers to go with the rings. He has the benchmark numbers (3,000+ hits) and was a 14 time all-star. So regardless of what thinks of Jeter his actual statistical resume is incredible.

Honest question (not being sarcastic)- do you think Eli's HOF chances are impacted by "how" he got his rings ie defeating the Pats?

Ewing is being disrespected..
chuckydee9 : 9/17/2019 8:23 pm : link
Eli in 2007 had a stacked team.. probably the most talented team in the league along with Pats and when he started playing at a franchise QB level.. that team was able to win the championship.. but for most of the year Eli lead the league in turnover.. On the other hand.. there was never a time till very late in his career that Ewing didn't play at a franchise QB level for his sport.. Its just that the knicks suck and have sucked for much longer.. as bad as the Giants are over the past 7 years, the knicks have been far worse for far longer.. and would've been just as baad had it not being for Ewing..

Eli had a great HoF career.. but Giants provided him the opportunity to do it.. Knicks never provided that caliber team to Ewing..
Ewing vs David Wright is a better comp

curious. Per Forbes Eli Eli Manning, QB — $235.3 million

Patrick Career Earnings: $123,843,120

Now that doesn't mean much because Patrick played in a different era. Had Patrick played now he would have made more money than Eli but I found that interesting.

Eli. Eli. Ewing was a great player, but I don't think he ever lived up to the hype. And this is coming from a man who loved Pat. The pre draft buzz had him as Russell 2.0. He was a HOFer no doubt, but wasn't the player a lot of people thought he'd become.

Seriously. There's a big difference between having a solid team and having a "stacked" team. 1 pro bowler, and yet they beat the Cowboys who had a record number 13 pro bowlers then beat the Pats who many were ready to deem the greatest team IN HISTORY if not for the Giants. Eli did his fair share in those games, just like he did his fair share throughout that whole SB run.

Then he (along with Cruz and JPP) carried on his own back a mediocre team to another SB victory 4 years later. If there's any argument for "Ewing over Manning" it has nothing to do with Eli having sooooo much more talent around them than Ewing did.
Ewing
Les in TO : 9/17/2019 9:15 pm : link
Was the better overall regular season performer and was on a consistent winner for a decade but never got to hold the Larry O. Eli had a more rollercoaster career with higher highs and lower lows.

Brady: 6 Lombardis

It took them a while to gel and get credit.. look at 2008.. same personnel minus Strahan and they were the most talented.. may be the team in October of 2007 wasn't the best.. but by the time the whole team gelled together and Eli started playing like a franchise QB (Pats regular season game) I believe we were a better team than Cowboys, Packers, any of the other AFC teams.. Pats were perfect until then.. but all others weren't as good as us.. That same team one gelled kicked ass in 2008..

By Feb 3 2008 we had the best OL, Best running game, best DL.. Top 5 -10 Lb group.. top 5-10 WR group.. a Franchise QB..

So part of your argument for the idea that the Giants "provided" Eli a stacked team (while the Knicks apparently never did so for Ewing) is that Eli was on a team with a "Franchise QB"... who was ... him? If I recall correctly.

I'm lost.
Ewing and Lundqvist are the same tier
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 9/17/2019 9:37 pm : link
Not quite dominant but very good and sometimes great over long careers. Never could close the deal and win the big game but a lot of that was due to their surrounding cast. Much more consistently impactful than Eli.

But Eli has the rings so even if he was relatively worse at his position than those two were at theirs, his impact on the New York sports scene trumps the other two. Not to mention QB of a football team is the biggest position in American sports today.

Eli’s epic playoff runs means he’ll be the more iconic athlete especially in New York even if he wasn’t as relatively good at his sport.
2011 was completely different..
chuckydee9 : 9/17/2019 9:39 pm : link
Eli along with a few others carried us that year... and Eli delivered that year.. Ewing never had.. but 2011 Giants (carried by a few players) is similar to what Ewing had to live with day in and day out.. from 2006-2009 Eli had a good team around him..

I don't want to diss on Eli.. he had a better career than Ewing.. but as a franchise Giants have been so much better than Knicks.. Knicks gave him no help.. Knicks suck and had they provided some competent teams outside of couple of Pat Riley years we would've had a ring..

and Jordan >> brady.. Jordan was 6 for 6 in his prime.. Brady is like 6 championship in 18 years.. including some years where he was carried by def and running game (2001)..

Eli Himself became a franchise level QB by 16th game of the regular season.. in 2007.. he was good and thats why we won.. but we also had the best OL in the league by Feb 3 2008.. Ewing never had the help from rest of his team..

I'm not trying to be a dick btw, but let's put it this way:

The Manning-era Giants and the Ewing-era Knicks both fielded playoff-caliber teams. The difference is Manning was known for showing up in big moments to put his team over the top and win titles, Ewing was known for doing the exact opposite (that is, not showing up in big moments). Part of the Giants "being the best team" by the end of 2007 and 2011, respectively, had a lot to do with Eli elevating his play. 2011 in particular Eli had an MVP-caliber season and then in the playoffs he probably did rise to become the best player in the NFL at that moment (even better than Brady was at that moment because Eli was just that good in the 2011-12 postseason). Ewing never elevated his game at the right time to be better than Jordan nor elevated his team to be better than the Bulls (or even the Rockets I guess in the Finals they made it to), whereas you can absolutely argue that Eli did accomplish that feat over football's GOAT, Tom Brady.

I will just have to disagree.. Dec 2007 till Plax shot himself.. Giants minus Eli were a far better team than any Ewing was provided in his prime..

Feb 3 2008 was the best sports day of my life.. so I am happy with either.. but from my young days till that day.. the only good team I followed was the Knicks and Ewing made those teams great.. so I have a soft spot for him.. Ewing was my first jersey.. Eli will prob be my last jersey.. I just overall think that Ewing is the most underrated player in NYC.. in those games 7 he was always good..
