This organization lacks leadership

jimvinct : 9/18/2019 1:23 am
Two games. Sorry defensive efforts and receivers whom otherwise would not be on most NFL rosters. I, like many of you, have been the biggest of fans my entire life. It's really hard to root for this team today. There have been plenty of bad Giants teams throughout my 35 years, and many more before, but I felt like the organization always was respected and prideful regardless of record. Now they are 0-2 again and Eli is the scapegoat. It's a sad day.

Tom Coughlin:

"He can handle it all. He's done it before. He'll handle it again. He's extremely bright. He's extremely competitive. He's what you want a son to be made out of.

He thinks he's the reason. He's not the reason. Eli, it's not you, it's not you. It's us. We win, we lose together. When we lose, I lose. When we win, you guys win. That's the way it is. That's the game. I know what it is. I got the game. I got it.

But what I would tell him, he's going to be right in here in about two days starting to work on next year, just like he always does. That's never going to change. God bless him for it."

The FO down to head coach really botched this. At this point I feel like I'm watching the laundry on Sundays, not rooting for the New York Football Giants.
I honestly don't see this as Eli made the scapegoat

I see it as the organization realizing they are a woeful team with little to no chance to compete. Under those circumstances, at 0-2, with Eli not seeming able to carry the team on his back at this stage of his career, there is no purpose to starting him. If they aren't likely to win and he isn't likely to change that fact, then it became time to play his successor quicker than they initially planned. This is what is best, long term, for the organization.
I’ll agree to disagree,
darren in pdx : 9/18/2019 1:58 am : link
they realised they aren’t winning or losing any games because of Eli, so next best thing is get the new kid experience and hope it sparks the team.

It's not 2007 anymore.

Eli's abilities have diminished to the point where he cant make his teammates better anymore. He's not a good enough QB to play from behind because he has no athletic ability to evade the rush or to make teams pay for being too aggressive in the pass rush.

He just doesnt have the legs anymore.

The sad reality is that the Giants have too much leadership.

Shurmur said it best when he was asked in preseason about DJ starting. He said John Mara is the boss and he pays the bills.

Eli shouldnt have been playing last year or the year before that even. It's simply over. He's played marginally better with a stronger offensive line this year, but we cant build around a guy who needs a top 1 offensive line to be an elite player again. This is as good as his performance is going to get.
We have been saying this

For years. The decision to do this now is actually an example of strong leadership. IMHO

how short his leash was before the season started. He may have opted out. I’ve always been a rip-off-the-bandaid sort of girl. At least it happened so early, but we didn’t need all this melodrama during the season. And Eli didn’t deserve it.

I totally understand the handoff to Jones. But, damn, Eli has been the scapegoat for this crappy TEAM for YEARS.
Coughlin

was years ago. Time to move on.

Eli had his hand in a lot of the team's crappy performances that made most of this decade of Giants' football suck.
It wasn't working
Lines of Scrimmage : 9/18/2019 7:07 am : link
with Eli. He needed not just a fairly good line but a top line with good weapons and a defense. The Giants could not provide the level of support needed at this stage of his career.

You can certainly make the argument that he should have had the opportunity to play with his two top wide outs.

PS, it is time to start winning games.

Too much leadership is not what kept Eli as the starter for two games. The FO and coaching staff had two different ideas in place. Leadership would have them on the same page from the beginning. If the threshold was 0-2 then Eli Manning shouldn't have been the starter to begin with.

The quote is to show this is about more than winning football games. The guy was the face of your franchise for 15 years and handled every scenario with class and dignity. Now the organization puts a shitty product on the field and pulls the rug after two games.

I know Jones is the new kid on the block, but this situation was handled horribly.

Yes, Coughlin and 2007 were a long time ago, That's not the point. Have we found a man to fill his shoes? I don't think so.
so when was the right time to bench him?
nygiants16 : 9/18/2019 7:49 am : link
He is not the same quarterback, i love eli but he is hurting them more than helpi g them.

And you can say they pulled the rug out from under him but shurmur said eli's job is to win and keep jones off the field, has he done that?

Last week was a perfrct example, yes it was 21-7 but there were countless times the giants had a chance to come back and the offense did nothing.

I love eli and i will always cherish the moments he gave me as a fan BUT there comes a time in every heros life that it is time to walk away and a lot of times it is messy but it is abaolutely the right thing to do...

If anyone thinks
cjac : 9/18/2019 7:51 am : link
that they are making this move to develop Jones, and not because they think Jones gives them a better chance to win, should go watch the first half of the buffalo game again
OP is 100% right
HomerJones45 : 9/18/2019 7:59 am : link
Better chance to win? Please. Why? Because he done good in preseason. Because of the “mobility” exhibited by his lifetime 3 yard a carry average at Duke (not to mention his attempt to run against Dallas- looked like a herring surrounded by sharks).

It was his first action. But it looked like he was grazed and the ball popped loose.

That is what I was wondering, was he a big playmaker with his legs in college? I can't say I saw a lot of him.

Wish him the best

DJ vs UNC - ( New Window )
I'm glad Shurmur
Gman11 : 9/18/2019 8:16 am : link
has the balls to do this now and not wait until the record is 0-6 just to satisfy the crybabies. This team is not going to win many games with this defense. Eli has shown through two games that he just doesn't have it any more. So, now it's time to get the future of the franchise his experience. What good would waiting do?
It's been more than 10 years
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/18/2019 8:39 am : link
That the people have been reactive to things, not proactive.

In many cases, they are a year too late to their decisions. They dont have solutions. They make corrections.
It boggles the mind that anyone
bigbluehoya : 9/18/2019 8:47 am : link
would view this as the coach (or team, or GM, or whatever) scapegoating Eli. I would call it a lazy take, but it's so much more than that. It's willfully obtuse.
Yeah right Homer
RollBlue : 9/18/2019 10:22 am : link
and Brandon Scherff was going to suck because he came from Iowa, right? Jones probably does give them a better chance to win, time to find out and we're going to. Let's hope your as wrong on Jones as you were on Scherff and TC getting a coaching gig 5 minutes after he was dismissed.
hmm totally disagree
AndyMilligan : 9/18/2019 10:54 am : link
I think in this matter they have showed surprising leadership. I felt DJ had to start by game 4/5. They accelerated the process. At least on this, that's leadership.
6 years of this mad experiment
Coach Red Beaulieu : 9/18/2019 11:52 am : link
square peg Eli in wco is finally over. It would be like watching Simtim play LB for Fewell/Spags for 6 years.

It just so happens we have pro ready Shurmer dream QB on hand.
