Mara/Gettleman getting criticism from both sides re: Eli

Sean : 9/18/2019 9:13 am
Francesa saying it was classless for there to be no quote from Mara/Gettleman with regards to Eli benching. Insensitive/disrespectful.

It’s easy for fans to pound these guys, but we should all acknowledge how tough it is to move on from franchise legends. So, to recap:

1. How dare the Giants bench Eli for Geno in 2017 at 2-9.

2. How could the Giants bring back Eli in 2018 & not draft a QB?

3. Giants are clueless for spending $23M on Eli for 2019.

4. How dare Mara/DG not say anything on the day Jones is named the starter. Show some respect!

This could have definitely been handled better, but people were going to bitch no matter what when it came to this.

5 games?

Webb wouldn't have lasted 5 series before they pulled the plug on that.

Mara and DG should keep their mouths shut for now

Although we are all marking this as the end of the Eli era, which it probably is, officially this is simply a coach making a personnel change, nothing more. Eli is still on the team. He can be back in there if Jones gets hurt or stinks out the joint. If DG or Mara do a press conference it does two things. 1) It announces to the world that Shurmur isn’t calling the shots. He needs permission as to who to play. 2). It puts tremendous unnecessary pressure on Jones. The time for press conferences is when Eli retires or is cut.

In the New York market? You're smarter than that.

I understand what you are saying, but there is a reason why all big organizations have PR departments. And it's not just to organize press conferences.

This idea that the media doesn’t matter is wrong. Pat Hanlon and his staff should be providing advice every step of the way on this.
Well, take it as a criticism of the public then

It's like when people on here obsess over the silly dog and pony shows known as press conferences - why? They have no actual importance.

This is all a bunch of harrumphing over unimportant things.
Mara inspires no confidence that he knows what he is doing

He has had bottom tier decision making the last 5 years. He has made mistakes that should provide learning experiences to never make again, and yet...

For his sake he better hope Jones is legit and a prime Jones covers up his warts like a prime Eli once did.
They got hammered with questions
Jan in DC : 9/18/2019 12:12 pm : link
about the transition between Eli and DJ on BBKL all offseason and Dottino kept saying "It's not going to be hard, it'll happen naturally. You'll just know when the time is."

I personally don't understand the idea of pulling Eli now, but I really don't mind it that much. But I thought they'd just play Eli until we were out of playoff contention and then move to Jones. Doing it this way signals to me that the coach thinks either DJ is the better player at this point, or he figures we're going to lose with him in the game or not, so you might as well get him in there to take his lumps.

I might be an outlier, and seeing reactions around here I guess I am, but I always expected this team to be a dumpster fire this year. The season was a non-starter when we had no pass rush and our secondary being comprised of Jackrabbit and a bunch of rookies.

has been pointed out by others on this site, in a way, McAdoo did Shurmur a huge favor by ending the streak. He took that off of the table.

I don't think sitting him and stopping the streak for the QB you just drafted with the 6th pick would give the same backlash. The backlash was more about starting Geno and not going to Webb to see what the younger guy had
There was just a good point I heard about this bullshit....

Stop worrying what the fans think. At the time of the Eli benching I could count myself among many that didn't understand why it wasn't done for Webb. Now we know. Make the right decisions and all that will sort itself out when you win football games. If it doesn't you'll find yourself out of a job anyway.

granting Francesa interviews, it would take a lot of wind out of his sails.
At one time he was a respected voice in NY sports media, but he's a freaking idiot now. Teams should give interviews, just to someone less of a blithering douche.////////

I still think there is more to the story of Eli cancelling his annual spot on Francesca's show. I think Eli knew this was coming this year and didn't want to deal with it.
Hardly novel take: Francesa said as much during camp that a QB transition, possibly imminent, and Eli just as soon would avoid it, as is his want re. 'controversy'.

But to ATL's take, I agree re. the stopping interviews, to an extent, not so much the rest of his comment (as I don't harbor as much invective for the Pope as many here do). That said, he was borderline if not over it disrespectful to Shurmur on Monday (baiting him to say why with his W/L record he had a claim on the HC position. He then went on to say the Giants were a 'putrid' team.

That was followed up by discussion of the Jets' season-opening fiascos, where he was much more matter of fact, saying the Jets were going to start 0-7. His bitterness to NYG stems from what he believes was DG lying to him over how the pick at #6 would go. Deep in grudge land: Shurmur doesn't yet have much to be proud about his tenure here, yet, but he didn't deserve the insulting tone and commentary.

with McAdoo is that the offense was about the same with sucko Geno Smith playing. That was the big flashing red light that Eli was on his last legs.
or that the offense was so bad, no one could help it.

Frankly I don’t think anyone can or should trust the decision making or evaluation skills of the clowntrust running this team. They have gone all in with their boy so it’s all on them now. They have totally run out of scapegoats.

should be fired, for allowing Eli to count this much against the cap, with all the holes on defense. Fired
I never had an issue with benching Eli in 2017
Matt M. : 9/18/2019 3:03 pm : link
What I had an issue with is benching him for Geno Smith. He posed no upgrade in terms of chance to win and did not factor in at all to the future plans. What I have a problem with is they knew a move might be coming and at no time did they elevate Webb to #2 status to take reps. He wasn't even running the scout team and hadn't taken a significant number of reps even during camp.

Now, by no means do I think Webb was the answer. But, I have a problem with not finding out in 2017 that he wasn't so that we could play Smith after the season was already over.

My take on that is they kinda knew what they had in Webb and were full speed ahead with Eli trying to win a game.

I know I'm the outlier that thinks the getting the other QBs playing time was semi forced on Mac
