Dunleavy Article About Eli's HOF chances

Essex : 9/18/2019 10:42 am
He is in. I think we all know he should get in, but I don't think we quite understand how much opposition to him there will be. He has been the most unfairly maligned player I think in NY Sports in my life besides Patrick Ewing. But, the fact remains perception is everything and outside this board people do not think that highly of Eli.

I should also add while I would like him to get in, I don't need some group of Hall voters to tell me what I already know.

a perfect symbol for the game, etc..Will get him in. He’ll also have spokespeople who know much more about Eli than the average HOF voter, presenting point by point all that many of us opined through the years
I think Eli needs to finish his career by taking another team to

the Super Bowl once or into the playoffs a couple of times.

Otherwise there will always be equally or more worthy candidates. Rivers, Brees, Brady, Big Ben.

Big Ben and Eli have exactly the same stats. Rivers is roughly the same too, but with no Super Bowl wins. I don't see why Rivers would be ahead of Eli, and Big Ben and Eli should go in together. They have been connected at the hip all these years
I think he'll get in and should get in

but there's legitimate arguments against him also. He really hasn't been anything close to an elite QB for at least 5 years now. We have to hope his earlier body of work, the playoff runs, and his counting stats, can override his really underwhelming recent performances and short prime.

“Eli played a lot of his career as if he rolled out of bed on Saturday morning from the frat house after a serious mega-kegger the night before."

Yeah, that's exactly right...

People get paid to spout shit like this?
I look at it as people have opinions and it will not change.
Gmen1982 : 9/18/2019 2:58 pm : link
It would be nice for New York to give him some type of celebration. Whether he gets in or not he was the QB for two great championship runs. No-one can take that from me. I don't see the use fighting with people over it anymore.
I don't think he is going to get in
moespree : 9/18/2019 3:02 pm : link
I think he should, don't get me wrong.

But there's been way too many of these types of people who for whatever reason never liked Eli Manning. Never thought he was good enough, always used the same "the defense won the 2 Super Bowls" line. Always questioned whether or not he was better than average. All nonsense, but it's persisted his entire career, and some of these people are hall of fame voters.

I just don't think he's going to get enough to get in, which is really terrible and stupid.
He'll get in, just not first ballot
David B. : 9/18/2019 4:29 pm : link
He'd get in on the passing numbers alone, OR the 2 SB MVPs alone. And he has both. But the haters will make him wait longer than first ballot.

I'd vote for Eli if I had a vote. I also think the odds of him getting in are about 40%. I don't think he's the lock others do.
Marcus Spears on ESPN Radio this morning and when asked about this
BigBlueCane : 9/18/2019 4:33 pm : link
his response was 'based on accomplishments yes, but on talent, No."

He then went on to pose the question to all hosts (Trey Wingo, Mike Golic and Mike Golic Jr.,

"Who would you rather have in a must win situation, Eli Manning or Tony Romo" and all 3 picked Romo.

That's what Eli is going to face in a nutshell.
well if that article is accurate -

he's going to have a hard time getting in no matter how we all feel

Me - I think he is a Hall of Famer -- he played in some all time classic and memorable games and delivered the bacon in them with iconic play
Eli has the rings and longevity.
BrettNYG10 : 9/18/2019 4:40 pm : link
Look where he ranks all-time in passing yards, TDs, etc. Romo was probably a better QB when he was healthy, but I don't think he ever had a year as good as Eli did in 2011. Or the rings.

Eli was also the best QB in the league for two separate playoff runs.
I'm not convinced he'll get in...
islander1 : 9/18/2019 4:43 pm : link
but it'll be because Reese ruined the last five years of his career with a garbage line and running game.

I think he's worthy, but people who aren't fans won't be able to reconcile his record.
I also think Eli

played in an offense that took risks (Coughlin and Gillbride's) and caused him to get a lot of interceptions. Now did Eli contribute to that sometimes with less than ideal decision, yes, but he was mostly a product of playing in a high risk-high reward offense and that is why his career interceptions are high and his passer rating about average. If you just look at that one nuance to explain those numbers, he clearly is a hall of famer. The problem for Eli was that every mistake was magnified because of people's perception of him and where he played. Eli is in on accomplishments, stats, and talent.

He definitely will not get into the Hall of Statisitics!

But he is very famous, so he will get into the Hall of Fame

Was make Rueben Randle look like a starting WR. When he went to Philadelphia after becoming a free agent the Eagles thought they got a good value. He never made an active roster again.
