Lawrence 3rd highest grades 1st rounder through 2 weeks

BSIMatt : 9/18/2019 4:29 pm
2019 overall grade: 75.6
Dexter Lawrence had a mightily impressive performance in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills and dominated in almost every facet of play. He earned 65.0-plus grades as a run defender (78.0), tackler (70.0) and pass-rusher (65.3) after he recorded three hurries and three defensive stops on his 34 defensive snaps. He ended the week with an 82.2 overall grade that ranked 11th among 111 interior defenders who saw meaningful action this Sunday.

It usually takes DT's longer to develop than most positions. I expect Lawrence to be a dominant force in a couple of years.

And the only pass rusher that went even close to our pick was Montez Sweat who had a major medical flag and hasn't performed on the field. You can't just say hey we need a pass rusher draft pass rushers. That is how you end up with Eli Apple and Ereck Flowers.

Swap Lawrence with any defensive player in the draft and we still aren’t winning those first two games. There was no player in the draft good enough that alone would be the difference in winning or losing either of the first two contests. Also 3 pressures in 15 pass rush opportunities is a 20 percent pressure rate, which is elite...that’s the rate Donald pressures at.

Have to admit I paid no attention to him
arniefez : 9/18/2019 5:59 pm : link
and I didn't notice him doing anything disruptive. But the defense did get more pressure (they couldn't get less) so hopefully he helped. The two games have been so sad there's no way I'd rewatch them. God bless you guys that can handle it. At least this gives some hope for the future and I'll pay more attention to him this week.

One of my good friends from work is a big Clemson Booster. Gave this kid good marks on him all around.et him a couple of times. After the DL the D seems devoid of difference makers. To be 3-4 or a 4-3 is irrelevant. They need a stud DE or OLB pass rusher.

All I want is Betcher gone. Chase Young might be there for the Giants and he’s a 4-3 end. I don’t trust Betcher at all he’s a scheme first coach and that kid would be a huge addition w the right coach. I don’t think we have that.

The ones that do like Aaron Donald and Chris Jones last year definitely do get noticed.
Generating pocket pressure in the NFL from up the middle is the biggest asset to win big games; no QB is safe or comfortable
If he played so well, why did he get only 34 snaps?

He's a Top 17 pick at NT...we should be expecting a capable pass rusher whose overall game rivals the 5 best at his position.

If he's not a 3 down player or cannot generate a pass rush then it's simply a poor pick at his draft slot.

Obviously there is usually a trade off
idiotsavant : 9/18/2019 8:48 pm : link
Schematically between getting after the passer and stopping the run. One can guess that 'stop the run' comes down from the getts, that some of the interior play techniques are new, that it will improve as they allow themselves to take risks vs run in order to boost the interior pass rush either scheme wise or personel wise and as the players integrate some stuff that's new to them.

The upside of a player like Dexter is the promise of being a 'both' type. An any down type.

I'm pretty sure Balt doesn't regret the Ngata pick (12 overall) and his best numbers were 5.5 sacks and 14 qb hits. DT/NT can influence the game in other ways.

Sunday appeared to have been rolling as the team averaged a solid 4.4 yards per attempt. However, a deeper dive into the rushing numbers shows that much of those yards were the work of the Bills’ running backs and not the offensive line. The duo of Devin Singletary and Frank Gore combined for 69 yards after contact and forced four missed tackles.

In particular, the Bills offensive line failed to create any movement between the tackles. When taking away the 55 yards created after contact on inside runs, the Bills running game generated only 26 yards on 19 carries when running between the tackles against the Giants.

On Sunday vs. the Giants, Buffalo struggled – allowing 12 total pressures, including four sacks, and their pass blocking efficiency ranked No. 28 in the league at 77.8.

I also think too many are writing off DeAndre Baker too quickly
Leg of Theismann : 9/19/2019 12:06 am : link
The guy was known coming out as a shut-down man-coverage corner in college. So now we see the Giants playing him like exclusively in zone? No wonder he's sucking. Not to mention he's only played 2 games. Give the rookie some time to settle into a role that doesn't cater to his strengths.
I thought they drafted him specifically because
BSIMatt : 9/19/2019 12:18 am : link
He was a press corner, I thought that was the point. Then he gets into games and is playing off the receivers and struggling...I never thought that was the plan to begin with. So yeah, I’ve been confused as well..reminds me of Webster coming in and having struggles playing a different style.
Baker
OBJRoyal : 9/19/2019 5:15 am : link
been thinking the same thing!! highly touted press corner being asked to play zone and people wonder why his lost.

next thing we will hear is, remember he got beat once playing press?? name a CB who hasn't been beat.

put him in a position to succeed.

Baker’s write up is also at the PFF link from OP.

PICK NO. 30: CB DEANDRE BAKER, NEW YORK GIANTS
2019 overall grade: 24.4
Things just aren’t going well for Baker in the Big Apple. After allowing four receptions for 132 receiving yards in Week 1, Baker was picked on this week against the Bills and allowed seven receptions on nine targets for 140 yards and a score in his second regular-season game as a pro. His two-game stat line now makes for grim reading: he’s allowed 11 receptions on 13 targets for 272 yards, two touchdowns and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. Making matters worse, he’s also been smoked for a 50-yard reception in each of his last two games.
