These past couple years I’ve always thought that Eli is different when it comes to this, he truly wants to go out as a Giant, and that it actually means something for him to do that. The way he speaks about it, you can just tell that it would kill him to put on another uniform. Another reason why at the end of the day he’ll always be my favorite athlete.
Agreed, but he wouldn't be the first such QB to move on to a different team. Unitas, Montana, Favre, and P. Manning all ended their careers with a new team.
Even the way he answered questions yesterday. He literally said he’s getting ready to run the scout team for this franchise. That’s how much it means to him.
I agree he stays, however if there was one place he'd go it may be JAX Â
I just dont see him being a good QB anymore and dont want to see him fail at his next stop. This is already going to be a tough season for him. The other scenario is that he asks for his release and is able to catch on with a team for the rest of the season. Hopefully he makes it to the playoffs.
I just don't think sitting on the bench this season is going to set him up for next season any better to play. At his age a year off will hurt more than it helps and by all accounts he is healthy so he doesnt need the rest.
to see what Eli still has while playing for a semi-competent organization? I've been a huge supporter of Eli these past few years and I want a definitive answer to whether he's washed up or not. Watching him win a Super Bowl with another team next year would feel terrible, while at the same time feel great rubbing it in all the anti-Eli Giants fans' faces.
that Eli went to Gettleman at the end of the season and told him he's retiring after 2019, but he wanted a chance to start the season and give him a chance to play as long as he can until they switch to a new QB.
The moves the Giants made after that meeting, ie- clearing out lots of cap space for 2020 by not re-signing Collins, eating the dead money on Odell now, and aggressively chasing a QB in this draft when all indications are that there are better prospects in 2020 coming out would seem to be in that vein.
I'm sure Eli didn't think he'd only last 2 games, and I don't think the Giants thought it either. But I have to believe that all parties knew that Eli was going to mentor a young QB and turn it over to him when the time came. The time came sooner than almost all thought, but I don't think anyone was surprised this happened.
Eli will be a good solider, not make it about him, and I'd suspect before the final home game against the Eagles, the word will leak that Eli is retiring and the Giants will do a little ceremony for him and we will see Eli's family on the field (just like Coughlin in 2015). I'm going to make an assumption that by that game, the Giants are long since eliminated and the Eagles aren't playing for anything with a playoff spot locked up, and the Giants might bring Eli out there for a final snap, maybe at the end of the game.

No, I have my answer. If he does go somewhere else I'll root him on when not playing the Giants but feel safe in saying that he will show more of the same.

Matt they don’t have to. Just make the last game Eli Manning day and present all during halftime.

See, that's kinda my point. I disagree with you but I know I could be wrong. I want to see if Eli can light it up with another team, specifically a non-WCO team...

Plausible but I don’t think this is the case. As soon as Jones was drafted we saw the video of Eli working hard in the off-season to get ready for 19. There’s the reports of him coming into camp in great shape. I think Eli wants to continue to play, preferably for the New York Giants, but he knows it’s over now.
In the presser yesterday he was asked about the NTC and his future. He was pretty vague and non-committal on those points. I think he’s looking to go to a solid team in a situation where he won’t be in a QB controversy week to week with another QB.

I'm not sure there is a situation that will line up where Eli is the clear and unquestioned starter. I think he is either a temp injury replacement, or keeping a seat warm for a young player. I doubt he wants to do either, but more likely the first than the second.

Nice story and a lot of wishful thinking.
Here’s another. He’s healthy and his arm is sound. The assumption around here is that he is a doddering shell who can’t play. If he gets an offer from a good team that needs a qb, (and there are a couple of very good teams that have qb’s older than Manning and some up and comers with iffy qb situations), he’s signing. No one not named Brady is walking away from multi-millions to provide their former team with a good story.
Such as whom? Jacksonville spent a ton of money on Foles, and he's not out for the season.
Pittsburgh has Roethlisberger under contract for 2-3 more years and he's their Eli. They're not cutting him for Eli Manning.
And the same is true for New Orleans. Two of these three teams have franchise legends under contract going forward.
You can argue a team like Tennessee needs a QB after this season. Would he go there?
Tennessee is a good football team. Denver has the foundation of a good team. Possibly Indy depending how their year shakes out. Carolina could be an option.
I think he’s looking to go to a solid team in a situation where he won’t be in a QB controversy week to week with another QB.

I think it depends. If he tests the waters next year after riding the bench all year this year then your read is probably correct.
But if he gets moved this year to a contending team and performs well/wins, his value will go up substantially in the off-season.
This is why if I’m in his camp I put feelers out to Jax, Pit, and NO. If he wins it will be hard to pull him. If he loses, at least he’s not rotting on the bench here. If he wins and they bench him for the incumbent (Foles or Brees), he’s still increased his value next off-season.
Would do such a thing. How you feel about Eli is how they feel about Brees.
If they look like shit at the QB position and are sitting at 1-3 or 1-4 with Brees 4-6 weeks out from returning, they may opt to roll the dice on the Eli option instead of a lost year.
I felt that this was going to be Eli’s last season, regardless. Â
I think Matt was right. The Giants will be eliminated by the final game of the season and it wouldn't surprise me at all if Eli starts the finale at home vs. the Eagles. That or he comes in at some point during the second half to finish the game.

Exactly.. and if you do not have a QB, then you are not a very good team. Eli is a very mediocre QB and nobody wants to pay him what he is earning right now.
...and retires at the end of the current season.
It will be tough to see, but I'm sure it was tough for Colts fans to see his brother in Denver.
