I dont love that TC was talking to the Eagles minutes after leaving NYG, but Parcells actually coached Dallas.

State of the team when TC left. They were also much more inconsistent under TC than Parcells, though I still feel like they repeat in 2008 if Plax doesn't shoot himself.

Plain and simple. His teams were the best Giants teams of my lifetime, and in the running for the best in franchise history.

the way Parcells did right after SB25, they'd get nearly the same level of respect. TC and Eli hung around long enough to be associated with a lot of losing, unfortunately.

I guess when you are part of that Coughlin cult following on here.

By cult you mean Giants fan but I guess you follow some other team.

Yeah, that must be it.

Greg hit the nail on the head above, there is definitely a faction (I won't use cult because that is a trigger word for you) on here who saw no wrong in anything Coughlin did and it was always someone elses fault. Make no mistake, we all bash Reese for all of those shitty drafts, but bet your ass Coughlin had a shit ton of input as well.

Well who is your favorite Giants coach- Fassel? Reeves, McAdoo? I just see no reason for alleged Giants fans to crap on a two-time SB winning coach.

Is it ok to be a fan of Coughlin's and grateful for the championships and also acknowledge that not only did he have a fair number of shortcomings but that there is also a group of cans who refuse to recognize or accept those flaws?

That's where the "St. Tommy" comes from. The fans who deny any fault at all with Coughlin.
People still watch ESPN?

I can understand Coughlin leaving but why would Eli have left at the same time? He's coming off a 2nd championship and mvp, you would think the organization was in a good place to make a couple more runs. Eli should have asked for a trade after Coughlin was fired

Because Coughlin is a fraud and full of crap and has the charisma of a dried grape. Parcells even with his long list of character defects is about as genuine as they come and a larger than life figure.

Plus Parcells left a huge impact on the game on and off the field. His jargon has become the jargon of the NFL. His coaching "tree" is still a big part of the 2019 NFL. Coughlin's coaching tree gets laughed at by Charlie Brown's christmas tree.

The 07 & 11 playoff runs were epic and will live forever as the most improbable and unlikely ever. They may even get a coach with a .530 lifetime winning percentage into the NFL HOF. Take a look at the average winning percentage of NFL coaches in the HOF.

But there is nothing else about Coughlin that says HOF including his first run in Jacksonville when he took advantage of the NFL expansion rules and built a great team before he destroyed it but yet still managed to lose to Jeff Fisher 3 times in the same year with the best team in the league.

Anyone who didn't see this coming in Jacksonville either wasn't paying attention or drinks blue kool-aid. Tom Coughlin shouldn't be anywhere near the 2019 NFL.

Just a general observation - for me, nothing takes away from the two Super Bowls he won. There's something to be said for going out on a high note though. Just for the sake of discussion, had Coughlin retired after SB46, he'd have coached the team for eight seasons, with five playoff appearances, two conference titles, two Super Bowl titles and only one losing season (which could be chalked up to Eli's growing pains). That's a spotless record.
Here's the thing that puzzled me about Coughlin.
81_Great_Dane : 9/19/2019 1:43 pm : link
As amply documented in the NFL documentary on the 2007 team, he sort of opens up to the players that season, let's them "see him the way his grandchildren do," creates a committee of veteran players to be his bridge to the roster and the locker room.

It works. They win the Super Bowl.

And immediately he drops that committee. I don't know whether he stopped being more open with the guys, to be fair, but I feel like TC resists change even when he tries new techniques and they've been proven to work.

Coughlin's reputation as a stern disciplinarian has always been sort of misunderstood. He likes military-style discipline but the vets who'd been with Fassel said Fassel's training camps were more physically demanding while Coughlin's were more mentally demanding. Coughlin likes cerebral players. He is obsessive about mental preparation and focus. Even players who don't like him have admitted that all that preparation paid off. But it's pretty clear he doesn't relate well to a lot of young men, especially young men who are not in the same faux-military mindset he cultivates.

I also think that ersatz military thing is kind of bullshit. You need guys who are a little wild and violent. Some of those guys will be undisciplined. If you don't have those guys, you're going to miss out on a lot of good players. And in fact, Coughlin's teams have often been short of talent, just as you'd expect if he primarily choosing guys who fit the mold, and only secondarily choosing the most productive players.

Parcells is up there, but was it not OK to criticize him when he was the Cowboys coach because, hey, he brought us those two Super Bowls.

Stop living in the past, it was time to move on from Coughlin, just like it is time to move on from Eli.

Yes, we are all very grateful for Coughlin and those two championships. But like Reese, he very much had a hand in the sorry state the franchise is in right now.

The final proof of this was when the Giants finally cut Flowers, and Coughlin immediately signed him. He would have never done that if the big bad incompetent Reese had forced Flowers on him.

Parcells coached in the time before free agency when it was easier to keep a winning team together. By the way, they both have two SBs.

I hope it's ok with you if the rest of us cult members have some respect for a coach who delivered half of our team's Lombardi trophies.

Refusing to trade him, turning down a trade offer, not ripping up his contract, insulting Jalens mother, keying his vehicle what?

TC should have done what Parcells did- walk away after the second SB so he could get the same knob-slobbering that some of you give to Parcells- who benched Simms, dallied with Brunner, got buried by the Bears, lost to the Jets to get knocked out of a playoff spot, lost a playoff game with an idiot decision when leading the game, and then left the Giants high and dry with a sudden decision after BB was hired by the Browns and leaving someone else to manage the post-SB decline. And he had a HOF GM throughout his tenure and never had to contend with losing players through free agency. He only benefitted from free agents signed after the USFL folded.

The 07 and 11 Giants were teams of legend. Judge thou by the strength of thy opponents. The 07 team beat one of the great teams in NFL history coached by the GOAT in the fucking championship game; the 11 team did it again. You idiots seem to think that was nothing and that it is oh so easy to find a replacement. Hows that working out?

As much as Reese is scapegoated around here, Coughlin was a part of that problem too. He helped Reese pick the groceries. Hes 1/3 of the reason we are in the situation we are currently in.

If he still had whatever it is, he would still be coaching somewhere.

Im allowed to have that opinion and also love Tom for what he did here. Those super bowl wins can never be denied or taken away.

Tom will always have a place in my heart just like Eli does.

It doesnt mean change wasnt necessary or might be rough in the transition. The buck was passed too many times so many changes should have happened all at once, but it didnt and here we are.

The 1990 49ers had won 32 of 36 games going into the NFC championship game, and the game was in Candlestick, so what was that you were saying about beating one of the great teams in NFL history?

Parcells is also one of the very few coaches who have taken multiple franchises to a Super Bowl (where is TC's other Super Bowl appearance? Oh, right, he couldn't get past...um....Jeff Fisher) and got the Jets to the AFC championship game two years after they went 1-15.

Never ceases to amaze me how some people feel continually compelled to throw shade at coaches who helped this team win championships, just because they disagree with some Internet yahoos over how good they were.

Anyone who is still pushing the Belichick would have been the Giants coach if Parcells left earlier is liar at this point.

That's a lie. It's been proven a 1000 times it's lie.

George Young hated both Parcells and Belichick. He chose Ray Handley and Jim Fassel over Belichick and Parcells.

I loved George Young but he earned his non spot in the HOF from 1991-1997. Starting with choosing Handley over Belichick and ending with choosing Fassel over Parcells.

He was a 27 year old special teams coach. So? What exactly is the import of that information supposed to be?

Perkins actually hired Parcells as LB coach before he hired Belichick for STs, but Parcells backed out and was out of football in 1979 before being Ron Erhardt's LB coach in New England in 1980.

They got off to a terrible start at 0-2 with a serious Super Bowl hangover. Players admitted it later on that they were kind of coasting at the beginning of the year. The strike put them in an insurmountable 0-5 hole, though. If not for that, maybe they would have gotten their acts together.
