Eli took a heck of a beating that day. Anyone who has ever questioned his toughness should be forced to rewatch this game five times in a row. The guy just kept getting up and kept making throws.
One of the guttiest performances I can ever remember from not just a NYG QB, but any QB.
The Oline was overwhelmed. That was the season Eli put the team on his back in spite of a sorry ass Oline. Our running game that year? Ranked dead last in the NFL.
lots of great moments including the strike to Manningham.
There were several instances that Giants were very fortunate the Niners defense didn't come up with a free ball. But those are things that get teams to the promised land....
another reminder that there was a time when i really enjoyed watching Eli play. i remember feeling great going into the game, telling friends that Eli was going to give us a San Francisco treat that day. he dElivered in fine fashion...
he doesn't look remotely the same athletically and nor should he but Â
simply saying he had a stretch where he was legit a special player but those days are gone. there is nothing wrong with getting old. you can appreciate the player he was and compliment that player but also say he is not nearly the same as he was. that's not a knock
After watching the SF highlights, the next video up is the GB highlights from the week before. It's the same uniform, but that entire team played on a whole other level. It's awesome. It'll never get old. Man I miss those days.
And kudos to the D. Apart from two plays where Vernon Davis got behind them, they pretty much stuffed the Niners. Only 1 successful third down conversion all day, and that came at the end of regulation.
of one team doing everything to lose the game (9ers) and one team doing everything to win the game (Giants).
There were a lot of signature moments in that game, but I think it came down to Eli made big plays in key moments and Milquetoast Smith didn't...
It seems like you're saying that the 49ers beat themselves. If the giants did everything to win the game while the 49ers did everything to lose the game then I would think the margin of defeat would be a lot more than 3 points.
The giants did a little beating themselves in that game as well, losing Vernon Davis in coverage twice for tds.
And Eli torturing Carlos Rogers. Was it him who was mic’ed up saying he can’t cover because if Cruz goes this way Eli throws that way, if Cruz goes that way Eli throws this way? Lol.
People celebrate Eli’s toughness here, and they should, but, in hindsight, it seems Gilbride and Coughlin utilized Eli’s talents the best: his mind and his heart. And his ability to read his receivers’ body language. That offense was intricate and it caused a lot of ints, but when it worked, wow. Eli really did scare defenses with his mind.
Two things are crystal clear to me watching those highlights, under substantial pressure 1) Manning 8 seasons ago was crisp and quick on his feet 2) the WRs are out and open in a flash downfield.
I don't think that Eli is any less of a player today. He just had a way superior supporting cast then.
I don't know how anyone could watch clips from 2011 and see the same guy. This is a pretty crazy take to me. I see a very, very different QB than the one who played last week against Buffalo.
Eli carried that 2011 team almost entirely on his own back.
There have been entire seasons since then where he's taken a major beating behind horrendous offensive lines and at some point, he became pretty shell-shocked - and who could blame him?
But he's just not the guy in that video anymore. It doesn't matter what the players around him are right now - he, himself is not the same player.
Eli was never 'mobile' but he used to have a much better feel for the pocket and he was nimbler on his feet. He used to have a little bit of 'quickness' and now he's kind of playing like there's mud in the pocket or cinderblocks in his shoes.
I wanted nothing more than a 'revenge tour' for Eli and for him to go out on a high note; but often it just does not work out that way. He just doesn't have the same moxie he used to.
but if he had a healthy Nicks, Cruz, and Manningham to throw to he would look much better than he has of late.
He has aged but make no mistake, this organization has wasted much of the later part of Eli's career by failing to field a solid OL around him. A real missed opportunity they will never have back.
RE: Eli is obviously older and not the same player Â

Absolutely - and I've said as much several times. The Giants bungled the back half of Eli's career pretty badly.
But, when I watch Eli Manning from 2011 and then reflect on the player I watched the last 2-3-4 years... I see a much different player.
And there's no shame in that. It's part of the process. It's nothing against Eli. Players decline as they age... it's natural.
How do you watch that game and not see a very different player Â
God I miss victor cruz. Any time someone on this forum dismisses the importance of the WR position, they should be forced to sit and watch this game from start to finish.
Why is it poor timing to reminisce about arguably the greatest QB in the Giants organization the week after he may have played his last down for the team?
I don’t think there is another poster who enjoys bashing Eli more than you. You can’t even enjoy one of his signature performances without adding your two cents about his current performance. It makes me wonder if you are a Giants fan. Probably not.

One of the saddest regrets from the last decade is that Cruz blew out his Achilles the week after Beckham made his debut and that we never got those two at their best on the field together. Cruz was not a number one receiver but he was as good a number two as you are going to find. He could have taken so much of the pressure off of Odell having to be the man all the time. What might have been...

You got me butt, I'm not. Neither is arc or giantsfan84 based on the above posts...
If you want to watch Eli and Nicks at their best, Giants at Cardinals. Eli and Nicks abusing pat Peterson with the back shoulder throws all game, then at the end Peterson bit hard on what he thought was a back shoulder throw, Manning and Nicks beat him over the top.
That game is underrated, Giants down two scores with under 5 to play comeback to win.
One of the guttiest performances I can ever remember from not just a NYG QB, but any QB.
Relatively speaking...
and yet Eli still produced...back then

Yep. And no, it’s not you knocking him. Unfortunately you felt that had to be said on this site...

07 was a team effort, great, balanced offense.
2011 - Eli WILLED that team to win.

What do we have today ? - Tattered rags

i would argue Kyle Williams fumbling two punts was the difference maker
Wow, really going out on a limb there....chief

Wholeheartedly agree!!!!
And far superior coaching.
By far. His resume is 2 HoF QBs, Manning and Moon.
