CBS Article on how DJ changes the offense

Jerz44 : 9/20/2019 6:37 am
Didn't see posted. Some more analysis for those of us who can't get enough.
Daniel Jones will dramatically change how the Giants offense looks in eight key ways - ( New Window )
Thanks really good read
joeinpa : 9/20/2019 7:44 am : link
It points out the limitations presented by a lack of mobility at the quarterback position unless there is a line that provides a consistent clean pocket

Game has changed, and while the first priority for an NFL quarterback is to be able to make plays from the pocket, today s game is littered with quarterbacks who can also extend plays with their feet

Thanks
Schneier makes a lot of really good points

in this article and backs it up with Romo's observations and concrete examples on film -- these are the very things I am excitedly looking/hoping to see this Sunday

If we see this stuff happen -- then boom!
Really hope we’ll see the zone read option

Especially if the Bucs are keyed onto Barkley.
This situation

With a different style QB is a great opportunity for me to learn more about offenses. While I have understand that Jones' mobility will have an impact, I think it's been exaggerated how much affective the offense will be considering the targets just aren't much to work with. I am looking forward to learning a thing or two.
when Tate is back
markky : 9/20/2019 8:59 am : link
we'll have plenty of targets with Tate, Shepherd, EE and Barkley. that's plenty to work with.
Great

The giants are certainly missing a player that can stretch the field, obviously the giants traded away Beckham, so there is a hole there likely all season. I'll be impressed if Shurmur's offense turns credible without a complete set of targets.
We'll see the next few weeks
Lines of Scrimmage : 9/20/2019 9:06 am : link
Shurmur said a couple thing during preseason.

1. They weren't doing a lot of the things he did in Minnesota.

2. Regarding bootlegs/rollouts he said if he could he would like to run a dozen.

This first game might be a little more conservative in approach but I think we will see way more boots.
Great stuff

Thanks for sharing. We will see how fast DJ can adjust to all the wrinkles the good defensive coordinators will throw at him. He has a much improved Ol plus Barkley compared to what ELI had these past years.
I hope this is true. I'm afraid we'll see a new QB with the same old

plays.
Conflicting sentiments between Simms and Schnier.
3putt : 9/20/2019 10:02 am : link
Schnier: more Shotgun and RPO. Simms: more under center and outside stretch.

I always eagerly anticipate each game, but I'm really excited for Sunday. I thought the switch was too soon, and ideally would not come at all. Now that it's here, I am looking forward to seeing if I can discern the difference in our offense. Pom poms.
A lot of truth there
David B. : 9/20/2019 10:18 am : link
And Jones' athleticism will certainly let him do stuff Eli couldn't.

But it's a fallacy to suggest that Eli couldn't run a bootleg, or succeed with play-action. Especially now that the OL is better. That shit was working. The first TD in DAL to Engram was a boot. And if they'd stuck to the run more, play-action would have been there.

But that's all moot now. I hope it works out as the article suggests, and maybe Shurmer's offense will finally look like something.
PA boot in the redzone
Coach Red Beaulieu : 9/20/2019 10:33 am : link
should be more effective with a mobile qb, forces the defender to be honest and defend two levels, the qb run and the pass.

Well lookie here we had shurmor's wet dream qb stashed away at Duke all this time.

I agree that Eli could/can run a bootleg, but Jones will run it faster and has more athletic ability, and he's a thread to run himself which Eli really never was -- the other thing that the article talks about -- and I think this is key, Eli was master of diagnosing the defense before the snap -- Jones has more experience diagnosing and making a decision after the snap. That is a major difference in approach and decision making. So a guy who can really move and has the additional threat of his own to run, making quick decisive option decisions on the move -- that does not describe Eli Manning

I think early downs we see DJ under center quite a bit, to run with Saquon and bootleg PA. That is if DJ can handle the snaps, I'm assuming Phil knows more about this than Scnier.
ZA
gidiefor : Mod : 9/20/2019 11:11 am : link
Phil was not a RPO player. Romo, on the other hand, was. Schneier is getting some of his material from an interview Romo gave about this.

Do you discount Romo's opinions and observations in deference to Phil's too?
Gidie, ZA, couldn't both Schnier and Simms be right.
3putt : 9/20/2019 11:46 am : link
When DJ is under center we might see more zone stretch with the QB getting back quickly several yards and several yards to the right or left, where Saquon is reading zone blocking, stretching outside and cutting to an available seam.

When he is in shotgun, running the RPO with an occasional keeper.

Complain about Romo, hate him for being a Cowboy, but he's by FAR the best commentator (former player) and knows the game. The more he talks the more you see the nuances of the game. If he's supporting it, I'm buying it.

Thats pretty much how I see it and I also see Jones
being able to buy more time with his legs and also
avoid some of the sacks and a much greater chance
of making positive plays with his legs when things
break down .

But that's all moot now. I hope it works out as the article suggests, and maybe Shurmer's offense will finally look like something.

he changes the offense by scoring more points. That's all that matters.

I feel great about DJ and yes, I know there will be growing pains and some bad games, but I am 100% convinced DJ gives Shurmur’s offense the best chance to succeed. I think we are all going to be very happy DJ is ours hopefully for many years before this season ends.

+1 on this post and your 2nd one on this thread. I hope Romo is right.

1--- Play action. Don't think our team can be that successful if coach doesn't use Barkley more. I don't understand with a guy like SB that ELi couldn't be successful as a play action QB too. I think a big part is the coach.

2--- Romo mentions RPO and success DJ had in college. But here is what SY said about DJ -- "But there isn’t a quick mind here, he doesn’t see everything a top tier QB does whether it is coverage or pass rush based." What if SY is right? How successful can DJ be in RPo without a quick mind? I guess if he doesn't have a quick mind nothing else will eventually be successful but having him make decisions like this would make it worse, wouldn't it?

3--- More downfield passes? But with this WR crew???? Okay -- if he connects -- then damn great! I don't know how much success he's going to have though with this group until week 5 at least.

4--- Regarding Zone-read Option-- can anyone explain if Romo is right and this is Shurmur's strength and Eli's weakness then why did GMEN even both to re-sign Eli for so much?

5-- IMO getting 1st downs with a weapon like Barkley is more important vs "resetting the pocket." OFC is Jones is "Mahomes" then that's likely different. Romo never won a title or got to Super Bowl so maybe that's what a flawed perspective might think?

6--- So Romo says Jones is going to increase "play action." Romo also says he is going to increase shotgun? ANd increase bootlegs? How much is left for other plays?

7---- **Big for me-- Romo says DJ can throw well on teh run. If Dj has quick ability to "see" on the run run then this is great! But if SY is right- that DJ doesn't "see" the field that well - then it's no big deal that DJ is "accurate" throwing on the run.

It'll be a lotta fun to see - primarily next year how things work out. But for this year just see how all the young players perform. I do NOT expect a straight upward climb. I expect ups and downs even in week 16 could be awful while 14 and 15 great.

Excited to see how Jones will unlock opportunities for this offense. I think we”ll see more YAC from his ability to place it while the receiver is in full stride, more deep shots and better success on play action.
