I thought Paxton would be your #1 in the playoffs. Dude has been lights out lately. Severino probably the game 2 starter if he looks good next few weeks?
I think German was maybe the 4th starter. It actually seemed like maybe they were preparing to use him out of the bullpen.
It's a bad situation all around and certainly the right move to just not have him pitch again this season. Whatever happened, it sounds pretty ominous. Not good

This. The Yankees were probably going to use him in the Cessa role after Green came in as an opener in Game 4. German was the #1 pitcher in terms of wins, but this team is going to go with Paxton, Tanaka, and Sevy as their top 3. If anything, this would open a slot for our friend Johnny Lasagna. At the end of the day, this hurts the Yankees, but not as much as it will hurt German as the Yankees might well get rid of him this offseason after this.
What ever he did must be more serious than we know. Â
MLB suspended him immediately, the MLBPA didn't protest and the Yankees dropped him like a bad habit. I have a hard time believing that this is all happening because of an unreported ( to the police ) incident that was not witnessed and that he may very well be denying.
Its possible that he was abusing his wife/girlfriend over a period of time and/or that he seriously injured her. Worse I'm wondering if there may be a child involved. I really liked this guy as a pitcher, but I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop here.
2. So we lost our No. 1 pitcher for the playoffs? Great. Might be a first round exit. Definitely won't get past Houston.
Yep we've had 40 guys go on the DL this year and we're on our way to about 105 wins, but losing German may as well make us throw in the towel. You can't make this shit up.
If he had broken a bone, would the Yanks' chances be shot? No. Â
I'm not a Yankee fan but even I can see this isn't terminal. You lost a pitcher. You lose the difference between German and the guy who replaces him. The Yanks have a deep staff, that difference isn't THAT big. Could it be the difference between beating Houston and not beating Houston? Maybe, but maybe not.
option teamed with CC or Happ. Paxton, Tanaka and Sevy are the 1st three options. He would have been out of the pen, maybe as long relief. ALDS you only need 3 starters.
It doesn't help, but it certainly does not cripple them.
a nice short role out of the pen in the offseason. LH splits are really good. So you have him with the intention of short work and if a game gets out of hand he can be your sacrificial lamb in long duty.
First focus should be on his relationship and on him. Its a very troubling behavior and we all doubt it just happened one time.
Morality aside, in a weird way, I think it may turn out ok for the Yankees.
1) imo, they are deep enough and young enough and with enough talent coming up and at the beginning of their window such that they should trade his ass as a signal to any idiot who thinks chaos off the field works to compete with the elite 100 win dynasties the Yanks will contend with the next decade.
By jeopardizing the playoffs on a team with a lot of players who are focused 11 month season grinders, I think he is untenable from a fit point of view.
If the current ( and I do mean jus the current ) Yankees claim the price you pay to play includes the Yankee way, the attending anger management classes route does not play here.
So, the already deep Yankees, with talent about a year away and many a player who has to be well rounded, near elite and able to accept coaching, analytic insights, sitting and playing more than one position now also have the number one kind of trade material.
A young, still developing, good competitor, near ace, under first contract starting pitcher. The further away he is from NYC and a major competitor, the more palatable the re habilitation story may be ok to the fan base ( Chapman was).
What would Frazier or Andujar and German bring? An Ace? A great SS or 1B? A top ten prospect like Torres was?
healing is up to him and God Bless that effort, but most of us will forget him by next year and I bet Cashman holds a reverse auction to talk up whose in the bidding and gets somewhat close to his actual value ( which as a baseball player is considerable)
Of course this assumes this is not on the truly horrible end of the scale and does not involve children such that baseball player is the last thing this guy should be doing in the year ahead. Im assuming its a crime but not a major felony. As we all know, patterns of abuse don't simmer down on their own
You.....you're good, you

Sack up, nancy. And he's not the Yankees' #1 pitcher, especially with Sevy back.

That’s the spirit.

-Another dipshit "Yankees fan".
Now Severino has returned for the playoffs, so we can most certainly expect to win 11 games without German...

More of a slap in the face to his girlfriend/ wife....

The biggest non-shocker is you seeing something that isn't there. Who is laughing about this?
I'm more surprised you didn't work in a jab about ownership than anything else.
