Notre Dame at Georgia

Jimmy Googs : 9/21/2019 6:35 am
About to hit the road for Athens for this highly-anticipated matchup between the #3 Bulldogs and #7 Fighting Irish.

Pulled out all stops/favors in order to get my tickets but will be there front and center. With my freshman daughter at UGA this year it makes it even more special to be at a game.

I haven't watched ND this season yet but word is they have been pretty loose in run defense which hopefully bodes well for the Georgia running game which is elite. Left side of Georgia OL is massive and will plow you over.

Georgia defense doesn't have as much talent on defensive side this season but this will be a good test to see if they have what it takes to make it thru the difficult SEC conference this year.

Go 'Dawgs...

Hope it’s a good game

Suspect it’ll be a blowout. Georgia might be the best team in the country and that’s a difficult place to play. Fun to have Notre Dame down playing an SEC team but I think they’re overmatched.
Sounds like a fun day

Was in Athens yesterday and there is electricity in the air.

This is a huge game for UGA. ND doesn’t come down to SEC country very often, so this one feels pretty big, especially with a Top 10 matchup and College GameDay on campus. Should be fun.

Go Dawgs!
BTW Jimmy, my daughter...

Georgia does have major talent on D,
barens : 9/21/2019 7:39 am : link
They are just very young.

My .02, Georgia is going to handle them easily. It comes down to one team can run the ball, and the other will have a really tough time. And I like Ian Book, but not enough to put his team on his back.
This is a mismatch on paper
Metnut : 9/21/2019 8:29 am : link
UGA are 14.5 point favorites. ND will need a few turnovers and big plays to keep it close and have a shot to pull off the upset.

Brian Kelly’s teams wilt in big moments so I’m not holding my breath.
Pretty good slate today

Usually in games like this, the speed is just too much for ND.

While anything is possible....ND will not win this game. I just want them to be competitive like last time in South Bend. Just keep it close. 24-17 fine 21-20 great. Prove you can compete on a high level on a big stage.

Looking forward to this. Georgia D is young and developing. They are starting to put some things together. The offense is as advertised. Just a beast of a running game. Let's see if Fromm can sustain intensity through the entire game. Those late game drop-offs in willpower cost us two championships against Alabama. He's gotta develop that kill instinct this season. Today's a good opportunity.

Lol, overrated? They’ve had very good teams. So they were blown out by Clemson and Alabama twice in the past decade - who isn’t? Ohio state, Michigan state, Oklahoma... lots of teams have been blown out by these teams in the playoff. And last year ND lost their best corner and Dabo exploited it. Shit happens.

They’ll probably lose today but at least they challenge themselves with a game like this (kudos to Georgia too) - as Alabama plays yet another cupcake and Sabean wonders why he’s always scheduled to play at noon...

Come on man. Notre Dame is one of the most popular brands in all of sports. I’d guess the fan base is much larger nationwide than any school in the country. I’m not directing this necessarily at you, I have no idea what your ties are with the school. Maybe you went there, I don’t know. But the average Notre Dame fan that hops on the bandwagon because of its popularity and then sticks their chest out because of that popularity are extremely annoying. And comical. It’s exactly like the east coast Dallas Cowboys fans that pollute the air we breathe. My team is so popular! Lucky me!

Again, nothing against you, I guess I’m just venting out loud at the entire idea
ND plays 5 ACC teams per year

USC
Stanford

And usually rotates two of Michigan, georgia, Oklahoma, texas, Michigan state, Purdue, etc

They play two cupcakes a year - their first home game (usually) and Navy. That’s as competitive if not more so than any team in the country. There is zero reason for them to join a conference - it actually usually works against them because they have to go undefeated where as flawed big 12 teams usually get in with a loss.

Oh I agree. Nothing wrong with anyone rooting for them. Hell, I’m not a huge fan but I root for them a bit because my father was also a huge ND fan. by at least trying to throw downfield especially when they were sitting on the slant routes.

Offense looked so much better when they went uptempo but they kept going away from it. I understand the defense needed a break but the offense wasn't doing anything.

On the same planet where putting your hands on a receiver with your back to the incoming ball isn't pass interference, either (multiple times).

r.

The guy who knocked the ball away didn't touch the receiver so they let it go.
Im fine with letting them play
MookGiants : 9/21/2019 11:57 pm : link
But when the receiver has no chance at catching it because he is pulled down, flag has to come out.

They let multiple tugs and small stuff go both ways. I just dont know how you dont call it when he got pulled to the ground. Did the ref think claypool suddenly forgot how to jump?
Good game.
Metnut : 9/22/2019 12:02 am : link
ND players played valiantly but couldn’t overcome awful coaching by Kelly. Awful clock management, timeout management, second half play calling, the guy always comes up short in big games. Sooner ND cuts ties with him the better.

Great game UGA. If Dan Jones is a bust, Giants should draft Fromm. What a stud.

As an Irish fan it was driving me nuts.

But it's not fair to say they weren't prepared. They played a hell of a game against what most of the world would call a superior opponent.

ND, treading water as the top of that second tier under the top contenders. Pretty much where they live in this era.

Most of them were caused by a concerted effort on UGA's part to cause false start penalties with sudden shifts. The officials can call that a defensive penalty, which is what Kelly was complaining about at one point.

ND's defense played better than I thought they would. UGA was too conservative early (and especially on late 4th and short going with FG) and ND was too conservative in the second half. The Irish couldn't convert 3rd downs because they spent most of the game throwing 2 yards passes on 3rd down. Claypool needed to be thrown the ball every time he was single covered. Finke has been a major disappointment thus far. The first INT was his fault. Book was okay. He still runs out of the pocket for no reason WAY TOO MUCH and his decision at the end of the half was awful.
They also wasted 2 timeouts in the second half with stupidity. Tony Jones was the absolute wrong back to face UGA.

Absolutely no reason for the Irish not to win out. Michigan stinks. Stanford stinks. Their other 4 toughest games are at home.
That was a jump ball
MookGiants : 9/22/2019 1:27 am : link
not a hail mary where you have 5 offensive players and 7 defensive players all going up at the same time.

Comparing it to clutching and grabbing which happens all the time is absurd. Claypool had zero chance to catch the ball because he got pulled down. He didn't fall backwards on his own. He never was able to jump.

If that play happens in the NFL, it's getting reviewed and changed to a flag. Not one of the other questionable no calls would have been overturned in the NFL. But that one was very obvious and Claypool had no chance to catch the ball because of the interference.

It's not why ND lost the game. They had plenty of opportunities in the game and the refs were fine otherwise. And I understand not wanting to throw a flag in a big situation, but if a guy gets pulled down you can't say "Let them play" That wasn't hand fighting or a little bump where he still had a chance to catch it, the contact took him to the ground.

ND really, really missed Jafar Armstrong tonight. Tony Jones is ok, but Armstrong is a really good back and much faster than Jones. Also a hell of a lot better receiver out of the backfield.

ND needed to do what they did on the 2nd to last drive throughout the game. Georgia's only passing offense was basically on jump balls.

Swift was the best player on the field. Kmet was probably the 2nd best.

I was at the game as well. Great environment. Great people here. Had a wonderful weekend and would have liked to come out with a win but it was still fun.

Georgia plays Bama really tough for whatever reason, but I think they would get destroyed by Clemson.
they had no choice
MookGiants : 9/22/2019 1:38 am : link
but to play Jones.

Jahmir Smith and Armstrong were both out. They weren't putting a true freshman in Kyren Williams on the field. Flemister is just ok. I dont think either one of those guys is going to make any sort of difference. Jones is also a very good pass protector.

Michael Young would have helped a bit. ND needs a game breaking WR. Claypool is a very good player, but they need a guy like Will Fuller.

Tyree next year will likely play right away. His speed ND hasn't had at RB in a long time.

Clark Lea is a wonderful defensive coordinator. Better than Mike Elko. Defense played their asses off. I was worried the tackles and linebackers were going to get exposed, and they really didn't.

ND needs to win one of these games. I don't give a shit about the top 5 stat since 2000. What happened in 2000 is irrelevant. If it is, then might as well go back 70 years. Because games in 1950 are as meaningful as games in 2000. They've had chances to win these games recently. People always say that ND gets embarrassed in all big games, but under this regime that's not true. They had a good chance to win this game. They lost by 2 in Clemson in 2015. Lost by a point against UGA 2 years ago. Lost to FSU at FSU in 2014 I think on the last play of the game after the referee called OPI negating the winning touchdown. Clemson pulled away from them last year, but clemson is on another level right now. They just have to get over the hump and win one of these games. But they aren't that far off from being in that next level of teams after Bama/Clemson who are just significantly better than anyone else right now.

Notre Dame with a good showing in a tough venue, particularly on Defense. Way too many stoppages in this game but crowd noise really bothered ND offense.

The ND defensive players falling to ground to stop the clock was bush league. Clearly faking it to stop momentum.

Georgia defense forgot how to defend Tight Ends. Seemed like I was watching the Giants out there. UGA punt returner also had an awful game.

Swift is a great running back. Safety Reed has some big plays. Thought Fromm was as accurate as hell with his ball placement, some in tight windows.

Pass Interferences (or non-calls) went both ways so bull shit it only helped Georgia. In fact Notre Dame had one called in the end zone that helped them in first half, and Georgia had two that were not called in second half that didn't help them.

Go dawgs'...
