Daniel Jones/ Elway and the Broncos

Mr. Nickels : 9/26/2019 3:42 pm
Take it for what it's worth but I have a friend who somehow knows John Elway. I asked her next time she talks to him to ask what he thinks of Daniel Jones (this was months ago) and she recently told me Elway told her that he wanted to draft him.
Yep
Nine-Tails : 9/26/2019 3:44 pm : link
the evidence points towards that being the case. The trade down and passing of Drew Lock three times.
HOT TAKE!

And there you may have it......

DG said that there were at least 2 teams that wanted to draft DJ. This thread and a previous one say it was Washington and Denver. Both picks were before 17. It is very conceivable.
I can't believe Elway said with a straight face

if Elway wanted Jones, he should have traded up. All of these reports that all these teams "wanted Jones" but wanted to wait on him, that doesn't really add up to me.

Maybe we should entertain offers of trading Jones

Once Denver traded out of the 10 spot after we picked DJ

They likely believed that given the choice between Sweaty Haskins and Jones, DG was going to pick what all the "experts" thought who the Giants should pick. They believed they were going to outsmart everybody else with the assumption that DJ was projected to go much later that DJ would be available to them without having to trade up. The moment that DJ was selected, Elway couldn't bail out of his pick fast enough.

To the media and fans, drafting DJ at 6 was bad enough. Can you imagine the uproar if he traded up for him? 😂😂

How about packaging DJ and SB to the Jets for Darnold?

Maybe he tried but the price was too high for him, and he wanted to take his chances at #10.

In any event there is no doubt in my mind he wanted Jones since he traded with the Steelers immediately after the Jones pick.

You guys acting like trading up is a matter of pressing a button. You need a willing trade partner.

Also, Everybody seemed to be floored that we took Jones at 6 yet somehow Elway was supposed to foresee this? I think Elway was pretty sure Jones would be there and he was as surprised as anybody when he came off the board.

Scheffter, the most dialed in reporter in the NFL with Denver football, is suddenly out of touch, then I see no reason to think the OP's story is remotely real.

So I'm going with Scheffter on this...

Always hard to know with mono, but is there a projection as to his possible return?
Almost everyone thought we'd pick Haskins at 6
CT Charlie : 9/26/2019 4:58 pm : link
or possibly trade up to avoid being poached. Give DG, PS and the rest of the team for keeping our interest a secret. The other teams probably thought they would be able to "steal" Jones somewhere between 6 and 17, hence, they sat tight.

A couple more weeks and he'll be back

from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw John Elway at 31 Flavors the night before the draft and she mentioned Elway said the word "Jones" into his cell phone.

I think that puts it to bed...

The media consensu before the draft was defense at six and qb at 17. Since March, it was reported we didn’t have much interest in Haskins

UConn4523 : 9/26/2019 5:34 pm : link
Denver rumored to want to trade down means nothing. Their trade down after us taking Jones could mean nothing (I don’t think so but obviously have no actual idea).

But I think it’s fair to assume more teams liked Jones than fans or experts knew about. Haskins falling also happened, and makes leads me to believe at least 1 other team was in on Jones, likely more.

I really don’t see him available at 17.
FWIW my old thread: Asshat adjacent re: Daniel Jones
V.I.G. : 9/26/2019 6:19 pm : link
A close friend is a Skins fan, lives in the NY area. Played in a charity golf outing with Jay Gruden.

JG said that WAS heard that DJ's private workout for the Giants was an absolutely lights out dominant display. They believed it because DJ "did a pretty nice job with us too." However, once they heard it from multiple accounts, they strongly believed there was no way that DJ would make it past 17, if not 6.

[So this next part is clearly JG talking his book to a skins fan but could still be true]

JG claims Haskins was always their target. His arm and whiteboard smarts are fantastic. His one knock is that he is way way slow. The reported interest in Rosen was always a smokescreen so as not to create a bidding war to move up if necessary. The only team they worried about was CIN bc their sources suggested Elway also preferred DJ. They were somewhat relaxed on CIN bc there was no chatter on them trying to move up, presumably for a QB. Once DJ was taken they were not surprised DEN traded back from 10.

Asshat disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed are my drunk friend's hearsay of a rival's coach post draft spin and was rife with speculation. Any content provided are of their opinion, and are not intended to malign any religion, ethnic group, club, organization, company, individual, Eli, Gettlemen, Mara, or anyone or anything.

The Ops story could be true. Simply because Elway could have lied to his friend. Right now Jones looks great so a lot of people are coming out saying they wanted him. Similar to Chip Kelly (I think) years later saying they had Odell rated as top player on his draft board.
What I never understood was
Giants56 : 9/27/2019 8:50 am : link
the thought of Giants should have waited to 17 to pick Jones (whether he was going to be there or not is inconsequential to me).
At the time I had no idea if the Giants picked the right QB or if Jones would be good (don't follow college and analysts obviously hated the pick).

But if you have the 6 and 17 picks in a draft and are drafting your QB of the future I as a fan want it to be with the 6th pick because if the Giants had drafted a QB at 17 I would have assumed they didn't actually believe in him and were drafting a QB to appease fans/media. You don't get cute and risk losing a QB you LOVE to get a better draft grade from Todd McShay because of value.
The QB position is different than any other position
Rudy5757 : 9/27/2019 9:06 am : link
If you feel like you found a QB that has everything you want you take him even if everyone thinks you are wrong. QBs are so hard to find and if you dont have one it usually means your team is terrible and all of your resources will go towards finding one. Look at the teams that have been in QB hell, they all finish in the bottom 1/3 year after year because they dont have a capable QB.

We were there in the Dave Brown era, we went through several QBs until we finally picked up Kerry Collins to right the ship a little then we found Eli. The debate over when we should have taken DJ is just silly at this point. how many teams liked him doesnt matter. Could we have gotten him at 17? Who cares at this point, the kid looks like he should have gone #1, #6 seems like a bargain.

even the tools at PFF stated that they knew, even though they were incredulous to it, that Jones wasn't making out of the Top 10 based on everything they heard before the draft.

They couldn't believe it, but they knew it to be true.
I just makes too much sense
Jolly Blue Giant : 9/27/2019 9:22 am : link
The Manning/Cutcliff connection, the need for a QB, and the immediate trade down after he was picked all point in that direction. Giants couldn’t have been the only team high on him.
The tone will be a lot different
Carl in CT : 9/27/2019 9:32 am : link
Because he will struggle against NE and Minnesota.
