The Giants & Belichick - 2020

Sean : 10/8/2019 9:20 pm
I know. This has been discussed in the past. There were articles about this after the 2017 season. Belichick loves the history of the NFL & once again spoke in positive terms about his memory of the NYG franchise this week.

Belichick has no reason to leave NE - he keeps winning Super Bowls. But, if there is a time to swing for the fences, it’s after this season.

The next HC hire for the Giants needs to be right. McAdoo didn’t work & Shurmur is 17-37 all time. Another bad hire cannot happen. Shurmur will likely get 2020, but nothing has shown me he is anything other than a good OC.

If I’m Mara after this year, I’m offering NE draft compensation & giving Belichick full control of all personnel. Whatever he wants. Maybe even a stake in ownership.

*If* it’s true that Belichick likes Daniel Jones (he was linked to NE prior to draft), maybe there is a chance a hail mary attempt could work. He’d have a young QB, manageable cap, a new challenge & could finish his career with the Giants.

All I’m saying, it’s worth a shot. We’ve had uninspiring coaches for awhile here now, it needs to change. This is the last opportunity to reach out to Belichick and it should be an aggressive attempt.
I'd honestly give up a finger for BB

.

As you said, why not give it a shot? This organization means a ton to him. And TB12 can't play forever. That said, I think he probably ends his career in NE. I think he sticks around for a couple of years post Brady to show that he was the top dog behind their dynasty.
Agree

But I fear this is another one of those moments where Mara will show loyalty one year too many. Unless DG could somehow convince Mara and simultaneously coexist with BB, i just don’t see it....

I’d do it in a heartbeat.

You raise a great point. A lot of this depends on Mara. He doesn’t seem like someone who would jettison Shurmur and put a full court press for Belichick. But, hiring Bill would still be doing it the Giants way, lol, so maybe there is a nonzero chance
If Mara wouldn't jettison Shurmur for BB if

Well, we're going to need a Rozelle like intervention to get this franchise back on track.

There is nothing the Giants have that approaches Belichick's value
Go Terps : 10/8/2019 9:43 pm : link
No combination of players or resources added together approaches Belichick's value when it comes to generating wins.

Last year the Giants were willing to pay Beckham about $20M a year against their salary cap. If that was Beckham's value under the cap, Belichick's value in an uncapped role is at least $150M. He could name his price. And New England could name theirs if necessary. Want Jones+Barkley+Lawrence+our 2020 draft picks? Done.

I don't think it would ever come to pass. Instead, I would set our sights on McDaniels. His offense is superb, and there's a reason Belichick was in a hurry to take him back after it feel through in Indy (I wonder what McDaniels learned about Luck that wasn't public).
Never hurts to try...

but it would require Jints Central to break their "Giants Way" mold and let Belichick wear both hats - HC and GM.

But why leave now when you have a defense that is so young and deep that you could be sitting on another 3 years of SB contention, even transitioning away from Brady.

One thing i fully buy

About Belichick

is that he desperately wants to win another superbowl without Tom Brady. The Jimmy Garoppolo drama just seemed too convenient to be completely made up. Belichick was planning for Tom's eventual decline and Tom's paranoia stopped Belichick from replacing him.

No one seems to know for sure when BB's contract is up, but I guarantee he will go to another team or stay with NE to win another superbowl without tom brady.

bb coming to save the day here -- why would he? Why isn't it any more than him just saying the right things to reporters?

That is even more ridiculous than my secret desire for Eli to suit up and win another ring (at least it wouldn't be w big blue.

Actually, it would hurt. It is called tampering and could cost us draft picks.

I think this is true. BB would love to further stamp his greatness by hoisting a SB without Brady on stage.

You don't think, btw, he is grinning from ear to ear watching his guys JimmyG and Brissett leading their teams to winning records as QBs...? Helps his QB evaluation bonafides even further...

GiantEgo : 10/8/2019 10:18 pm : link
There has been a theory that Belichick benched Malcom Butler in order to sabotage the Super Bowl and get revenge on Brady and Kraft over the Garoppolo trade.
No
Big_N : 10/8/2019 10:20 pm : link
I don't think he cares about winning wo Brady and probably hates the thought of not having him around. I'm sure if the right qb presented himself--he would do it -- and would probably be a brady clone. Brisset who? THose guys run on 3 rd and long. I haven't seen that since the 1980s!

Belichick will sign Eli next year and the Pats will win the Super Bowl.

Sorry I'm confused...
Leg of Theismann : 10/9/2019 12:27 am : link
Why would NE give him up in exchange just for "Draft Compensation"? I'm asking humbly and seriously here because I don't know the terms of his contract, but why would NE ever even consider letting him go for anything (if he is under contract)?
But...
Leg of Theismann : 10/9/2019 12:31 am : link
The thing is he already has an impressively strong foundation and championship team built in NE that he would essentially be handing over to someone else to win with and take the credit for. Even if it's a friend like Josh McDaniels doing it I don't see Bill being too intent on handing over the keys to his dynasty so he can come to a broken team completely in shambles and have to start all over again at near 70 years old while Josh McDaniels (or even worse some schlub he doesn't even know or like in the scenario he takes Josh McDaniels with him to NYG) wins multiple titles.

But who knows maybe he just loves a challenge. I personally believe he just flat out loves winning and wants to win as many titles as he can before he dies or retires and staying with the Pats gives him the best mathematical chance of doing that for the foreseeable future.

One other thing to maybe consider: he has no real history with John Mara, does he? I mean Wellington was still very much the owner when Lil Bill was a NYG. IDK

I know hindsight is 20/20. But, we should have hired BB the day Bill Parcells left.

How do Mara/Young think Ray Handley was a better choice at the time? Did they ever explain that?

Unbelievable.

He left in May '91. BB was already long gone to Cleveland by then. And never mind the fact that Young would never have hired BB as HC.

I'm not sure you can just add "never mind the fact" as a throwaway line to your point that Parcells screwed us. It is a fact that Young would have promoted Handley over Belichick regardless of the timing of Parcells' departure, and it obviously is also a fact that Belichick got offered a head coaching job that offseason, so he wasn't going to stick around to be DC under Handley.

Not sure how you can possibly turn that into Parcells screwing us since there was no outcome in that scenario that would have led to Belichick becoming HC.

You can also throw Sean Payton in there, only 1 SB but one of the most prolific offensive coaches of all time.
The only scenario that might work is if Brady looks cooked
CT Charlie : 10/9/2019 11:20 am : link
and Gettleman was willing to step down. Even then, BB probably wouldn't want to come to New York because it would take too long to turn things around, and there exists the possibility of tarnishing his legacy in New England. He's 67.

I think I write this everyday. But I guess it shows that if you repeat the lie over and over people believe it. We have one guy here who knows it's a lie but keeps repeating it anyway. But if you see the crazy s**t he posts on twitter it's not a surprise.

Bill Belichick and Tom Coughlin for that matter were both told they were not going to replace Bill Parcells.

The Giants - Wellington Mara, Tim Mara jr. George Young all knew Parcells was leaving well before Belichick and Coughlin left. Both were told it wouldn't be them.
How long is he going to coach
Lines of Scrimmage : 10/9/2019 6:30 pm : link
in reality? Maybe he wants to go upstairs in 2-3 years. The question then may be what franchise he values the most (Giants versus Patriots)?

I think he is grooming his son to be a HC but maybe he gives that role to McDaniels first as he continues to develop his son.

If he comes to the Giants I hope Ernie Adams comes as well to add all the data/analytics stuff.

Let’s be honest the giants had a downhill down stream pathway to being the greatest most successful NFL franchise ever, and by a wide margin. Even if you leave out Lombardi, and just add belichick here for 15 years, we’d have the most titles out of anyone. Guess we’ll have to settle for 4th or 5th best all time, off the top of my head, based on titles, etc. Giants need to go on another run soon.
