Deandre Baker: has there been steady improvement?

superspynyg : 10/10/2019 8:33 am
This is for all the recliner analysts on this site:

Has he taken solid steps forward in his development since Week 1?

I’m not expecting him to be compared to anyone but when he was drafted, I questioned the pick over the other top cb still on the board. I really like him in Georgia and like every Giants fan want him to turn into a solid cb for us for years to come.

How awsome would it be to have DG hit on all 3 first round picks as solid starters for this team!
I think so. That doesn't mean he won't have bad games here and there

as a rookie, but he does seem to be getting better. We'll see for sure later in the season.
His 4.5 speed concerned me, his 1st games put up red flags
George from PA : 10/10/2019 8:59 am : link
But seems to have responded well.

Haven't heard his name in awhile which is usually a good thing for corners and OLmen
The less you hear a corners name
Biteymax22 : 10/10/2019 9:06 am : link
the better. He did give a TD up to Theilen this week, but he actually had decent coverage and just stumbled a little. Theilen is also a tough assignment.

He's young, he'll have his bright spots and dark spots, but he does look like a starter for the next few years.
I thought he's had serious issues tackling.
NoPeanutz : 10/10/2019 9:23 am : link
But he's basically the only guy there, so he has to get better.

He got beat for a TD last week. Stumbled out of his break or he may have been able to make a play on the ball.
He was absolutely horrific the first two games
Jay on the Island : 10/10/2019 9:25 am : link
since then he has improved significantly. He's still got a long ways to go but I'm encouraged by how he responded since the Buffalo game. I was genuinely concerned that his confidence was shot after that game.
Rookie corner generally suck

I think he will be fine. We are playing for next year.
We can always plug Stupar in there
NoPeanutz : 10/10/2019 9:37 am : link
if he needs a breather.

i think he's been way better
Justlurking : 10/10/2019 9:44 am : link
even when beaten last week he was on Thielen's hip. He's definitely coming around. Missed some tackles though which at his size he shouldnt be.
Trending well

4.5 speed is fast enough to cover

in NFL. Technique and play recognition will help him. Once he gains more experience and studies other teams tendencies, I think he'll be pretty damn good. He's already shown glimpses of what he can be on a consistent basis. He's also got the right attitude for the position.
Let’s also point out that for all his supposed
LauderdaleMatty : 10/10/2019 10:08 am : link
veteran smarts Bethea is shot. FS needs to be addressed next year. The back 7 was green and a question mark Before all the LB injuries. Also hate Betcher Kid looks a lot better thank God. Still early but like it’s been mentioned he’s been so much better since game 2
Can't rush too judgement re. corners.

Remember how bad Webster looked until that Bills game in '07 & then he became All Pro lite?
A late 1st round rookie CB thrown to the wolves
Coach Red Beaulieu : 10/10/2019 10:39 am : link
Missing a huge chunk of prime preseason not completely embarrassing himself every game.

I'll take it.
i would say
Gordo : 10/10/2019 10:52 am : link
he's doing better than Corey Webster was doing his first year. Remember it took webster almost 3 full seasons to click
I was at the game last Sunday
Giant John : 10/10/2019 11:22 am : link
There were some plays where he missed tackles or he covered poorly. In my opinion he has a ways to go.
He still strugles in zone coverage
JFIB : 10/10/2019 11:50 am : link
But in man to man he is less of a liability. Not physical enough for my taste. He's not a very good tackler at this point.
he's not the weak link
Ron Johnson : 10/10/2019 1:09 pm : link
if we somehow upgrade at slot corner in the not too distant future that will be the real test.
Steady? Maybe not.
Matt M. : 10/10/2019 2:18 pm : link
But, certainly improvement over the first 2-3 weeks.
He's alittle better...
Rong5611 : 10/10/2019 3:53 pm : link
He's still not great, but he's improved since the disaster of weeks 1 and 2.

Yes
huygens20 : 10/10/2019 5:00 pm : link
Primarily a man coverage guy asked to play cover 3/4/2 suddenly

Why do you think he gave up those big plays? It’s a completely different world when you have the eyes in the backfield and you’re asked to read the qb, LOS, and wr route combinations all at once in the nfl

His strength is still man coverage but clearly he’s reacting better and he’s stopped giving up the overhead big plays because he’s reading the field better.

He’s gonna keep improving
No
weaverpsu : 10/10/2019 5:25 pm : link
He's gotten worse. Now when he actually doesn't avoid contact and makes a tackle, he taunts the guy and gives his team a 15 yard penalty. I'd play Ballentine until he learns how to play football again.

And that penalty was huge. And it was Stupid (capitalized on purpose).

Our best DB.
His tackle on Sony Michel, as Michel accelerated to the corner
BlueLou'sBack : 10/10/2019 11:57 pm : link
but couldn't out run Baker cutting him off was freaking awesome.

I can hardly remember the last time I saw a Giants' DB making a play like that on an RB racing to the corner.

That was a terrific textbook form play. He has made several plus plays vs the run the past two weeks, and he's looked good doing it.
I’ve been trying to follow Baker closely and I am a bit concerned.
cosmicj : 10/11/2019 12:01 am : link
He’s playing in a shitty situation and is at the beginning of his career, so I am willing to overlook some mental mistakes.

What concerns me is that he has probably below avg ( for the NFL) speed and quickness. He seems to fall behind receivers regularly. His tackling is suspect, I think because he can’t change directions as fast as the players he is trying to bring down.

Let’s see how this evolves.

The kid can tackle. He is starting to show up making plays more often like the one you mentioned.
Think he has passed JJ as the #1 CB.

In fact, once JJ and Haley are off the field, the coverages may get better - they could hardly get worse.
He’s improved
jeff57 : 10/11/2019 7:13 am : link
I don’t know about steady.

Agreed. He is playing better and doing a pretty good job the last few games but his lack of speed and quickness is pretty evident by watching him. Others have overcome it so let's see how he continues to grow.
He's a ? to me
Jim in Forest Hills : 10/11/2019 9:21 am : link
I think he matches up better with more physical but less quick twitch receivers as he can press them without worrying about the speed.

I also see him almost lackadaisical sometimes on the field. Hope he continues to improve.
I liked the tackle on Michel
Bill L : 10/11/2019 11:28 am : link
but (and I could be wrong), he overall looks soft to me.
once the mental aspects
fkap : 10/11/2019 11:35 am : link
become second nature, the quickness increases. There are limits, but you see more action, less thinking.
he's been better, but still a bit of a disappointment
Greg from LI : 10/11/2019 11:36 am : link
Corners often take some time to round into form, though
that's assuming
fkap : 10/11/2019 11:36 am : link
he has the mental acuity for the game.
Even when he was getting burned you could see
arniefez : 10/11/2019 11:37 am : link
he has the speed and skill to be a good cover corner. Corners need two things experience and a pass rush. He'll get a little of both this year. Hopefully he'll have more of a pass rush next year.
It's coming
Torrag : 10/11/2019 12:02 pm : link
His cover reactions are adjusting to this level. He needs to improve his run support awareness. He's late to read it and often finds himself with his back to the play. That too will improve fairly quickly. He's going to be a plus cover corner with real tackling capacity once he figures it all out.
