Was home sick today, and ended up watching this. Saw it in the theater originally with my son, couldn't remember much other than not really feeling anything one way or the other, and it had been on my list to revisit so...
What a fun movie! Starts out clunky, but really gets going and by the end, I could buy in to Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo (which I didn't think I could and perhaps was what I struggled with the first time).
I know there's a movement out there for a sequel. Add me to it, I'd like to see where that goes next. Maybe a Disney Plus Series?
Sure, there were things to quibble about, it wasn’t perfect, but I found it a thoroughly enjoyable Star Wars film
+4. Fun movie. RO was also very good.
Anthony Ingruber not getting cast as Han is one of Kathleen Kennedy's (many) big mistakes since the Disney acquisition. I think the exact same movie with Ingruber in the role would have made a tangible improvement.
And, honestly, Han's backstory is a story I didn't want or need. Seeing him mysteriously show up in Mos Eisley is exactly how his character arc should begin.
I think The Force Awakens got a bad rap. I loved it.
However, The Last Jedi was perhaps the biggest cinematic disappointment of my life. I had been looking forward to seeking Luke tear shit up as a true Jedi Master since I was 12 years old and they cop out with that shit?
Fucking lame.
But I am super-psyched for it. I feel very similarly to the way I felt in the months leading up to Rogue One. Something just feels very, very right about it...
I especially liked Khaleesi
It was a decently fun watch, not something I will likely watch again unless they did do a sequel, which is unlikely.
Yeah it started a bit goofy, but I thought it got much better as it played out.
Han deserved better than the death he got. The prequel didn't do him any favors either.
Wasn’t Rogue One good but far better than TFA and obviously TLJ.
.
By far, for me.
Man. How do you whiff on that call? He'd have been perfect! I didn't mind Alden Ehrenreich, and I enjoyed the film overall...loved Donald Glover as a young Lando, thought it was setting up a nice little arc with Darth Maul, overall pretty fun. But Ingruber would've been awesome. Seems like an obvious choice when you watch him.
Sorry about that.
Sorry about that.
Your point was worth two "Man"s.
It should have been Ingruber.

Here's the problem with the Ingruber complaint. How does anybody know if he's a legit actor that can carry a film? He was a youtube impersonation sensation that landed a bit part as Ford's son. That's the extent of his resume.
Who knows if he has the chops to carry a blockbuster film. He's just a good impersonator.
Agreed. As someone who disliked Episode 8 enough to decide not to watch 9 when it comes out this winter....I waited a couple weeks before finally seeing Solo with my family and generally thought it was solid. Especially factoring in Ron Howard having to take it over near the end.

that this needs to end, I could never get why it was Solo. I also thought Solo was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it. In fact, I liked that and Rogue One much more than anything that has been done since Episode 5 (Empire).

As a lifelong Star Wars fan who grew up in the sweet spot of the late 70s/early 1980s when the original Kenner toys came out (and thanks to my mother never throwing any out, still are in boxes somewhere) Episode 8 was clearly a middle finger to older Star Wars fans to basically kill off all the old guard and get ready for the new story. Essentially it was the Transformers movie in the mid 1980s when they killed Optimus Prime like 10 minutes in. I'm going to watch Episode 9 only to put the bow on it, but for me, the original trilogy really is "Star Wars". The prequels were George Lucas unchecked and the final 3 movies are what happens when a corporate overlord takes over to reboot a franchise to sell shit. Empire Strikes Back remains one of the few movies that I will drop what I'm doing and will watch if I ever see it on the screen.
As for this post and Solo, I actually enjoyed it. What hurt it at the box office was all the director drama that hit the news before it and everyone knew that Ron Howard had to do something to save it. The unsaid undercurrent that we are led to believe that young Lando banged the droid I could have done without....

They had to bring in Maggie Kiley to coach up Alden Ehrenreich, so they could have just done that with a guy who was a better natural fit.
And Daisey Ridley and John Boyega never carried a blockbuster film before. And Lucasfilm hired both of them.
He played a younger version of Harrison Ford's character, not Ford's character's son.
That doesn't fly when you're working with new material. You need a real actor.
I could have written this, word for word.
And if I can add one thing -- and it pertains to Solo -- I was utterly confused when Darth Maul showed up in the film's final act. My friend who was with me told me how Maul survived and resurfaced in the cartoons.
I am not going to watch hours and hours of Star Wars cartoons to keep up with the film franchise. I'm just not. If they want to make cartoons for kids, that's great. But keep those stories separate from the movies.
I understand Disney wanted the current trilogy to follow a different path than the expanded universe. However, I think this trilogy is shitting on the saga, as opposed to completing it. Episode 8 especially represents this thought, but to me Episode 9 seems only slightly less "offensive".
