One Bright Spot: ILB David Mayo

Anakim : 10/10/2019 11:45 pm
One of the lone bright spots was David Mayo. He's active, he can wrap up and finish a tackle and he has good sideline-to-sideline speed. He's probably nothing more than a stopgap, but I'll give the guy credit. He's no Stupar. This kid has game.
Good catch
5BowlsSoon : 10/10/2019 11:47 pm : link
I didn’t watch the first half, I was out so I will have to watch the tape, but I too noticed him in the second half. Ogletree too.
He makes mistakes
Vanzetti : 10/10/2019 11:48 pm : link
Got sucked in on play action. Didn't cover his man coming out of the backfield once this week and twice this week.

But he also makes plays. Probably nothing more than a quality backup. But a good guy to have
I’m good wit Mayo staying on as depth......
Simms11 : 10/10/2019 11:49 pm : link
Defense needs better depth and he can play.
He did look good.
St. Jimmy : 10/10/2019 11:49 pm : link
A repeat next week would be good.
his play has improved
bc4life : 10/10/2019 11:49 pm : link
a lot.
He plays hard
Greg from LI : 10/10/2019 11:53 pm : link
I'll give him that much.

getting sacks and pressure. Just need to get everyone healthy and back on the field.
Mayo
uconngiant : 10/10/2019 11:54 pm : link
is miles better than Stupar who should not be on the team, and yet still is
Mayo..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/10/2019 11:54 pm : link
was really promising with the Panthers. His issue was staying healthy.
Mayo 13 tackles and some good hits
Bluesbreaker : 10/11/2019 12:12 am : link
also tackle on specials and Ogletree also with
12 tackles need to get the offense healthy ..
then maybe we can compete again .
I agree completely.
Vin_Cuccs : 10/11/2019 12:23 am : link
I was going to post something similar. At worst case, he’s above average depth.

Put it this way...I know that Mayo and Davis are different types of players, but I wouldn’t automatically assume that a healthy Tae Davis is an upgrade over Mayo.
Mayo
Marty866b : 10/11/2019 12:25 am : link
Definitely laid the wood out there a few times tonight.
I thought he had a decent game last week too
AcesUp : 10/11/2019 12:27 am : link
Stupar just had one of the worst games I've seen from a Giants LB. He's looked pretty good. What the Giants really need to be doing this year is proactively trying to identify guys that can help them moving forward, even if it's just a potential role player and depth guy down the road. If Mayo can prove to be multiple year 3rd LB, with quality game experience that can be counted on in spot duty, that's a win from a roster construction standpoint.
Yes. As I pointed out in the "Inactives" thread
ZogZerg : 10/11/2019 6:49 am : link
He has moved ahead of Davis on the roster.
And, he played very well.

Like some here, I'm SHOCKED that he didn't play a perfect game. After all, he was signed after the season started.

Wasn't it Stupar being blown up into the backfield on the punt block?
Baker and

Carter also looked good
Stupar is strictly a special teams player
jeff57 : 10/11/2019 7:07 am : link
But Mayo can play. At least against the run, Like almost all Giant LBs in recent years, he can’t cover.

& yet he got blown up on the blocked punt that freaking hit him. Stupar blows. He shouldn't be on this damn team.
He's a football player.

If you know what I mean. (And no, not just that he's white lol)
Great DTs improve LB play

Yes, Mayo looked great but there were many times he was unblocked. Logjam in the trench frees up ILBs.

Was thinking the same thing. Our big body DL's are doing a pretty good job this year of clogging up the LOS.

Did the light bulb go off for Carter? Or was this just a game where both teams weren't at their best due to short rest and Carter had a surge?

He was very good last night
Jay on the Island : 10/11/2019 9:27 am : link
He's been a pleasant surprise. He's not someone I want starting full time but he is an excellent backup. Good find by Gettleman.
Connely - before he got hurt...
x meadowlander : 10/11/2019 9:38 am : link
...many plays where he was flying parallel to the line untouched.

THAT is why I wanted Lawrence at the 6 spot, it's why I loved Snacks, going back even Norman Hand - having dancing elephants in the middle of the line cures a multitude of ills on defense.

Somehow, Ogletree is playing worse than Mayo. Bummer - I was psyched when the Giants signed him. We got a lemon.

Carter does look great, BTW.

Ogletree will more than likely be released this offseason and he should be. He's been a big disappointment. The only ILB's I want to bring back for camp are Connelly, Mayo, and Tauaefa. The Giants need to add an ILB to start opposite Connelly. It's time to invest an early pick at the position.

He has nowhere else to go
This may be a case where Gettleman's history in Carolina helps.

Between injuries and other circumstances, Mayo hadn't really shown much more than special teams aptitude since DG drafted him. He looks like quality depth, which is pretty important in an attrition league.

Another Panther fifth-round pick to keep in mind is Corn Elder. I think he could trot onto the field today and cover the slot better than Grant Haley. Haley has made some nice plays around the line of scrimmage, though. I'm not sure Elder has that dimension to his game. Anyhow, the way Giant CBs go down, I expect to see Elder promoted before the year is out, even with Beal waiting in the wings.

has a knee injury we nee to hedge that bet .... Mayo did look good last night. But we need 2 more legit starter or players with TRUE starter potential not hopes and prayers...

Thought that was the best game
section125 : 10/11/2019 11:23 am : link
I've seen from Ogletree since he's been a Giant. Mayo was very good.
Grading him relative to Stupar
Jay in Toronto : 10/11/2019 11:26 am : link
is an absurdly low bar.

Love his energy and very active against the run but a liability vs pass IMO

We have to get Corn Elder on the field for no other reason than to have a guy named Corn Elder on the field.

We're in Moses Regular territory here.
Are there any defensive players out there named Ham?
Greg from LI : 10/11/2019 11:30 am : link
Give me Ham on five, hold the Mayo.

Mayo has earned consideration of a long term contract
Torrag : 10/11/2019 12:05 pm : link
He's been very good and very smart. Come the off season keeping him deserves some thought in comparison to the market.
