Still a huge problem

Marty866b : 10/10/2019 11:48 pm
Guys, the offensive line still sucks. Gettleman has not done such a great job here as we had all hoped. Solder, at his salary, is a disaster and Remmers is way below league average. Our guards have underperformed and Halapio is not a good NFL starter. Jones, as in all the games he has played, is constantly under duress. When you look at the Eagles, and Cowboys upfront and then look at our guys, it is going to be a long time before we can compete for titles against those teams.

I said, it's past time for some major changes. They aren't opening any holes, and their pass protection is poor. I'd bench Zeitler and Remmers for Gates and Smith or Slade.

with their offensive arsenal severely depleted. Jones had time. Guys couldn't get open.
Maybe it'll help if next year we flip Solder to RT and then draft/sign

Can we see
djstat : 10/10/2019 11:53 pm : link
How things look with a real RB playing at the same time as our speedy TE and all WR? Jones has time. No run game tonight against a top 5 defense. Your expectations for a team in the middle of rebuilding is hilarious.
No players
uconngiant : 10/10/2019 11:55 pm : link
no run game at all, so what do you expect, seriously.

The line is average at best and better than last year, but still need improvement no doubt. I would like to have Barkley back along with some of the other players
Zeitler

They're not very good
jcn56 : 10/10/2019 11:58 pm : link
And that's despite spending a lot of resources trying to get it right as well as replacing Eli with a much more mobile successor.

Look at how many units you can say that about - while people go on about how this "rebuild" should take 5 years - I don't think they realize that at the average rate of attrition, they'll have lost a good number of players who were added in that timeframe by year 5. And that's without taking into consideration that a lot of the players being added just aren't very good.

I hope you're right, because he looks horrid out there.
Don’t get me wrong...not the best performance tonight.
Vin_Cuccs : 10/11/2019 12:27 am : link
With that said, I don’t think the depth is any better. If they were, they’d be pushing for playing time.

To take it a step further, I think offensive line play is an issue around the league. There really aren’t any dominant lines anymore.

The line isn’t perfect, but it’s an improvement from last season. I know that’s not saying much, but baby steps.
I wouldn't say they suck
mrvax : 10/11/2019 12:50 am : link
but would say they stink. They are an improvement over last year's first 8 games group but still not league average.

I am sick
jtfuoco : 10/11/2019 12:50 am : link
Of hearing our Oline is not good enough the freaking patriots can win with Newhouse and Cannon out there but the Giants need all Pros at every position to win. Let's face it a lot cones down to scheme and play calling and the Giants don't have the ability to bring this team to the next level.

Marty866b : 10/11/2019 12:57 am : link
NE has injuries on the o-line and Newhouse is not going to start when others return. We have a weak pass rush and though we got home a few times tonight, a good pass rush team would have given the Pats fits. Jones was under duress most of the night. Same as last week. Solder and Remmers have been awful as has Zeitler who is given a pass due to injury.
The tackles are awful..
prdave73 : 10/11/2019 1:20 am : link
Solder is trash and Remmers is not any better. These two positions need to be addressed in the offseason. I don' care if this team takes a huge loss on letting Solder go, it has to be done. If they want this Rookie Jones to be successful, it has to be addressed.

Decent push on some runs....decent protection on some passes.

The OL was not the problem imo
Hard to pass judgement on last night's game
Diver_Down : 10/11/2019 7:19 am : link
with no running game and the Patriot's D. But looking back, there was a vocal minority (ahem) that could see the results that we are seeing coming. Solder was always the stop gap. Yes, he is being paid as a top LT, but in the vacuum when DG took over, there was no alternative but to overpay for a competent LT. Relying on Halapio is fine for a season especially seeing Spencer get tossed around like the red-headed step-child last year. Halapio can be upgraded, but he isn't the reason the OL was a mess. Zeitler has been playing hurt.

The real problem this year was to ignore RT in the draft until taking a flyer on Big George. We put too much faith in Remmers a guy who wasn't healthy enough to jog around in shorts/t-shirt after we signed him. Eric was posting pictures of Remmers from his Viking days exclaiming "this is what a real RT looks like" and the lemmings of BBI hopped on the bandwagon.

So instead of building another key piece of the OL with a high draft pick, we settled on a band-aid when we knew we were already settling on a band-aid at LT/C. Now, we realize that outside of Hernandez/Zeitler, the entire OL is bleeding through the band-aids and they all need to be replaced.
This is repeated often and continues to be the wrong approach

Sure there was an alternative to paying a mediocre (at best) LT top tackle money - it was to get a marginally worse tackle and use that money somewhere else.

The biggest failure of Gettleman's tenure thus far has been his FA spending. To put it bluntly - he sucks at it. When he pays for discount players, he disappoints. When he pays good money for talent, he disappoints. The likes of Ogletree and Solder on this team occupy a huge swath of the cap for very little in return, and 'there weren't better options available' doesn't make it any better.

Lmao. Your so off base. Zeitler is playing with a bad shoulder. Remmers has been 20 times better than solder. So you want to bench the right side of our line and use backups with a rookie QB. This is called an emotional reaction to a game we had no business being in. The fact we kept it close gave everyone on this board a false sense of what this team is. We aren’t very good and we happened to play up to the opponent.
Agree
Lines of Scrimmage : 10/11/2019 7:37 am : link
Zeitler is hurt. This may be having a corresponding effect on Halapio. Solder will be back next year but they probably need to address Tackle round 1 next year if the value aligns.

We really need someone on the team not playing or practice squad to emerge....hopefully to take Remmers spot. Can't keep throwing heavy resources draft/Fa with all the other holes imo.

The line isn't above average but it's better than last year's version. If 26 is out there last night, we are likely having a different conversation.

I though in the overall they had a decent game
BillT : 10/11/2019 9:13 am : link
They are a work in progress and need better talent but last night was a better performance than they had against the Vikes.
Offensive line was pretty good last night, protected well,
Zeke's Alibi : 10/11/2019 9:21 am : link
and was getting some decent push. Hilliman just sucks, there was a 10 yard run that should have went for 50 it was so well blocked by everyone. DG is making me mad this morning, the guy seriously looks like a fucking Stewart clone out there. What the hell did he see in him? And the worst part was you activated the Rice kid who's been on the practice squad for a month, get him some action PS, rookie RBs come in all the time and have success. Hilliman sucks so much.

Bingo there's one run that was going to the house.
The WRs got no separation
Rudy5757 : 10/11/2019 9:34 am : link
It didnt matter about the OL. No WR on the Giants is ever really open like other teams have WRs running free on us. We are depleted of playmakers right now so things look ugly.

Our #1 WR, TE and RB were all out. Our 2nd WR was playing his 1st game of the season and our RB is barely PS worthy but he had a decent game.

This is not the game to pick apart the team. We needed a perfect game and had a chance even though it wasnt perfect. 4 turnovers and a blocked punt will kill any team. Overall the score doesnt reflect the game. The D played great, Special teams let us down in a big way and the O with the weather also affecting the pass just didnt have enough to win this game.
This is the best offensive line play we have had in years.
since1925 : 10/11/2019 10:27 am : link
We have some problems but this isn't the biggest one. The active RBs have no burst, can't break tackles or make guys miss and show zero vision. Let's not blame the OL for that.
"This is the best offensive line play we have had in years."

Talk about damning with faint praise
I thought they played pretty well last night
gmen9892 : 10/11/2019 11:25 am : link
They are a middle of the NFL group right now and certainly could use improvement, but this unit is not bad. In fact, it's the best we have had in Blue in about a decade.

I don't understand why people aren't factoring in our opponents over the first 6 games of this season. The Cowboys, Bills, Bucs, Vikings and Patriots all have Top 10 defenses with great Front Sevens. Hell, even the Redskins have a pretty good Front Seven (zero offense is their problem).

The schedule and defenses lighten up in 3 of the next 4 games. Let's see how they fair against those opponents.
