Seeing a lot of criticism for Jones on Twitter. Why?

Vin_Cuccs : 10/11/2019 12:19 am
Just to put it in perspective:

Short week of recovery and prep with travel.
No Barkley, Engram, Shepard, or Gallman.
Against the 1st ranked defense in the league.
Howling winds throughout.
Facing the defending Super Bowl champions in the midst of their dynasty.
Questionable play calling and officiating.

Yes, 3 INTís, but one was tipped straight up, and his arm was hit on another.

I thought his ball placement was very strong considering the elements and his personnel.

Iím not trying to make excuses for the kid, but he showed me a lot today. He was given no favors, and he didnít make any excuses for himself.

Only his 4th NFL start by the way.

Iím stunned by the criticism Iím seeing online. What was the expectation?

Sorry...just venting a bit.

I'm thinking anyone who blames DJ (or Shurmur) for that loss aught to save some money up and buy a clue. The only negative I can think of for DJ is he made some throws a more experienced QB would have thrown away.

Was it constructive? Is it a ton of people saying "Jones sucks"?

He didn't have a good game tonight. You mention a ton of good contributing factors, and I think you'd need to be nuts to write him off entirely based on tonight's performance.

At the same time, he made plenty of mistakes worthy of criticism. I'm sure he said as much in his press conference, and he'll be at it bright and early tomorrow to make sure he addresses the things he did wrong.

Stop caring what people say on Twitter.
Dude, come on...
Leg of Theismann : 10/11/2019 3:18 am : link
161 yards passing, less than 50% completion %, 3 INTs, a 35.2 rating. Of course people are going to shit on the kid for that performance, particularly the non-Giants fans tired of hearing the "Danny Dimes" hype. What did you expect?

I'm not even bashing Jones here, this was basically expected given he's a rookie on the road in his 4th start against an undefeated, #1 in the NFL Bill Belichick defense, AND NYG had all of its starting skills players out. I totally get the perspective. But fans are fans and the media will be the media. When a guy turns in an objectively shitty performance people are gonna laugh and gloat and "I told ya so" all the to the bank. You really expect them to like "see things in perspective" and give the kid a break, and be like "he showed us grit tonight if nothing else" etc. etc.?

Come on now.
We'd be saying the same things
Leg of Theismann : 10/11/2019 3:21 am : link
if Haskins was getting the kind of hype Jones has been getting recently (IF Haskins was playing decently) and then came out and turned in a performance like this. In fact, when Haskins came out and was basically thrown to the wolves as his first NFL experience against the Giants, he DID throw 3 INTs and we all DID laugh and gloat and say he sucked, despite the fact he's clearly still just a rookie who was nowhere near ready to be spontaneously thrust into action like that. Is Haskins going to be a good QB? No one can honestly know right now. But we sure as hell weren't going to pass up our opportunity to shit ALL OVER HIM when he came in and threw 3 picks against us while our hero #6 overall pick delivered us a sweet victory by a comfortable margin.
Did Haskins come into play

It doesn't matter. My point was that NFL fans and media are going to react to a stat line no matter what context you frame it in. Particularly the people ready to hate on Jones and the Giants.

But either way I don't think shitting on Haskins was warranted anymore than fans/media shitting on Jones tonight. It was one damn game and in both situations these were ROOKIE quarterbacks presented with an awful and unwinnable situation. Can you honestly say you have any idea what kind of QB Haskins will be, say, 4 years from now, just from that one game against the Giants? Can you say for sure whether he'll be out of the league or a franchise QB (whether in Washington or elsewhere)? It was one game and he was thrust into it completely out of nowhere, and regardless of any injuries he still was playing for the absolutely awful Redskin offense which is terrible even at full strength. Not to mention the guy only started 12 games in college and had the luxury of an incredible offensive line and receiving corps at Ohio St., so I will say that Jones was probably better equipped experience-wise for a game like tonight although Jones was also in a comparatively WORSE situation tonight than Haskins was 2 weeks ago against NYG.

...But all of those specifics aren't important, what's important is these are one-game sample sizes and have no bearing on how good these players are actually going to be half a decade from now, but fans and media who are ready to hate on Jones (or Haskins) are going to invariably react to stat lines and ugly INTs regardless of context. This is my long roundabout way of saying Yeah it's gonna happen but it means nothing and you might as well tune it out.
Lets make this simple

He didnít play well.

I think thatís my problem.
Vin_Cuccs : 10/11/2019 5:21 am : link
If you just look at the stat line, the assumption is that he didnít play well. That is false. And somewhat lazy.

He threw catchable balls all night. And got absolutely no help. Thatís whatís frustrating.
Iím not sure
Les in TO : 10/11/2019 5:40 am : link
If Belichick exposed a weakness but whenever Jones was blitzes and pressured from the right he either threw the ball away or otherwise not close to a completion. It was windy and there were a lot of skill players out but will be interesting to see if other defended attack similarly

When Jones had time to throw, he had covered receivers. Defenders were on the Giants receivers like glue. He had no "easy" throws. His ball placement had to be PERFECT in order to make completions. He had perfect ball placement on the TD and the defender still had a hand on it.

Yeah, he made a couple of bad plays. Yeah, he was playing the #1 D in the league short handed. Yeah, twatter sucks.

running game. And then the RB coughs up a TD. I hope that they had an excuse for keeping the running backs out besides just being cautious. Pass up a chance to be a surprise contender so they'll be at their peak for all the meaningless games we'll soon be playing.

All these goons mocked the Giants for taking Jones at six. Then he starts out playing like he's going to be the best QB of the last two drafts.

So now they're saying that they were right in initial evaluation of Jones.

And it doesn't matter what the conditions or personnel a 35 QB rating can't be acceptable from a starter in the NFL. That being said he did show potential last night... made some nice throws... made me think he could be a for real top 10 QB one day... but last night he deserved criticism and he was right when he said he needs to play better.
I thought Ellison ran a terrible route
Justlurking : 10/11/2019 8:03 am : link
And that int was on him. Jones didnít play great but i blame the loss more on the fact that Hilliman is fucking garbage and the receivers other than Slayton and Tate were fucking trash. Also Nate Stupar sucks at everything. Stupar and Hilliman need to be released.

They were contesting almost every throw with borderline PI type coverage.
Why the criticism?
5BowlsSoon : 10/11/2019 8:14 am : link
Easy answer.

Many people are not really football savvy and they are like lemmings, just parroting the crowd (talking heads for example). They see 3 interceptions and only 161 yards and they immediately think BAD GAME.

That is the furthest thing from the truth. Not all the interceptions were because of horrible passs.
1. Was a deflection. Yes the pass was a bit behind the receiver, but it was still deflected
2. His arm got hit while throwing
3.it looked like he didnít see the safety in that zone. The pass was a good one to Ellison, but I donít think he read the coverage.

Okay what else....
1. Did you notice DJ holding onto the ball, willing to,take a hit, hoping someone would get open? Tjere were just not guys getting open. No surprise....look who his receivers were. Ellison is slow, My grandma can blanket Latimer, and even Tate had a guy right next to him on ever6 pass he caught. For example, his td, the CB was all over Tate, but the pass was perfect and the dude fell down.

2. Yesterday did you notice the very strong winds especially going in one direction?

3. Pats were blitzing every down because they knew we had no RB to,worry about.

4. There was one series where DJ completed to Slayton for 9. Hilliman got stuffed on second down. Shurmur calls a pass on third and one obviously not trusting Hilliman to get that 1 yard, DJ takes a long time hoping someone gets open....no one does....incomplete.

Bottom line: no running game, no decent WRs or TE, a mediocre OL, blitzes every down, no separation...DANNY SHOWED ME TOUGHNESS BEING WILLING TO TAKE A LICK FOR A FIRST DOWN. By trying to make plays, you will get an interxeption occasionally. Anyone who criticizes Danny with all of these handicaps really lacks football acumen or has an agenda.

15 of his 31 passes were tight window throws. That means less than 1 yard of separation. It's the most in the NFL over the last two years.
Once again if you thought he had a bad game you are what I call
Zeke's Alibi : 10/11/2019 8:51 am : link
football clueless. Stick to baseball where stats tell the story. Did he have a good game? No, mostly on the back by the pick to the sideline, which I think was a busted play and bad route by Ellison, and the one where he didn't throw it away early enough.

The wind was intense, no one was getting open, and Hilliman needs to be cut this morning. Not too many QBs are going to succeed in that situation.
The Giants would have had a better chance to win
arniefez : 10/11/2019 8:51 am : link
The last two games with Eli at QB. But they probably still would. have lost both. The good head coaches are going to take advantage of a rookie. Any rookie. Itís smart to play Jones since this is going to be another terrible season.
Because they are morons
NYG007 : 10/11/2019 8:58 am : link
Jones has balls. He tries to make plays happen. The Ellison INT was beyond dumb, but that is a rookie mistake.

The other INT, sure, high throw, but it hand Tate right in the hands. How it pops up 25 feet is just NYG luck. That doeskin happen for our D, ever.

The other INT, he held it too long, again, rookie, but a fluke slap on the elbow turned it from a throw away into a free INT to a guy sitting in a zone.

He also held the ball too long because he had a rookie WR, rate, Latimer (should not be on an NFL team) and 3 backup TE's, and No NFL caliber RB's playing.

Come on now. If a 5th string bum (Stupar) doesnt miss an assignment and 5th string bum rb (Hilliman) don't screw up 2 plays, we probably win, against a 5-0 team, ON THE ROAD.

Our future is very bright, led by Jones.

All of those are reasons WHY he had a bad game. You can't point to his performance last night and try to paint it as a good game, it doesn't work that way.

He was in a very difficult situation, and the results are basically what you would expect them to be - not good.

Absolutely not. Fucking Patrick Mahomes wouldn't have done shit in this spot. Probably has 2 less ints, but there was absolutely no where to throw the ball. Couldn't even run the screen game. We should have seriously looked at putting Peppers back there in a couple packages, something I'm sure BB would have done if he was coaching this team.

Most Fans are dumb. Itís an escape for us all so I get the irrational, quick firing, emotionally charged fan and his or her take, but they are still dumb.
Every day fans and talkies feel compelled make declarations and assign blame. Itís judge, jury and executions on a daily basis. Then things change and fans begin anew. Baseball player doesnít hit in October? Heís a choke artist. Qb has a good September? Heís a franchise qb. Bad October? Heís overrated. And then thereís the money angle. Donít even get me started there.

I mean we have a legion of fans here who managed to lose sight of how valuable a player like Barkley can be. Now itís all about roster and asset mgmt and how the giants would have been better off drafting a different position than RB. Never mind the player. Never mind the talent. Never mind the grass ainít always greener and never mind the value of what we have here, nope, I know more because I said so and the giants would be closer to winning because DEs arenít as fungible, whatever the fuck that means. Canít even prove it. Doesnít matter.

Jones didn't play well
bigbluehoya : 10/11/2019 10:55 am : link
there are some reasons he didn't play well, not the least of which is that it was his 4th game as the starter and he was on the road against a strong defense.

Twitter and the talking heads are just doing what Twitter and the talking heads do. If those things really get under your skin, tuning in less (or tuning them out entirely) may help.

Nothing to be too concerned with at this point. Games like last night (in terms of QB play) are the reason many of us wanted Jones inserted so soon. He proved that the game isn't too big or too fast for him, but that he's got some curve of learning and development to proceed along.

+1 This is where I am falling too.

Also on the Ellison route, he ran it where he was supposed to. The backs dropped into a zone scheme so the route took him right into the cb. Ellison is not supposed to change his route, he runs it and in theory allows other to find space. Jones was supposed to see that Ellison would not be open in that D scheme and move on. It was a bad read and and a rookie mistake.
