What do we have with Markus Golden

Giantimistic : 10/11/2019 9:29 am
Is he one of our long term answers. Have we not seen the best of what he has to offer yet? I believe he is a free agent next year. What type of contract will or should we give him.

If he and Carter keep ascending, what position should we be targeting for more passrush?

Hard to know but he looks like a keeper
BillT : 10/11/2019 9:34 am : link
With he Ximines, Carter and maybe Skipper we might be in better shape on the edge than we think. I would like to see another high draft choice, even a 1st, for the DL. Another quality rusher there would make a big difference next to Lawrence.
It'll depend on who is DC next year
bigbluescot : 10/11/2019 9:35 am : link
it won't be Bettcher unless there's a complete turnaround in the 2nd half of the season.

Double digit sacks. I hope they lock him up soon....

I disagree....they defense is young and ascending.....
Lock him up
regulator : 10/11/2019 9:43 am : link
He hustles, he has the right attitude, and is one of the few playmakers on this defense.

I really like what he's bringing to the table on a defense in desperate need of pass rushers. He is a piece we can build with.

i'm not sure how that works with extensions Will the affect his 2019 cap, because we don't really have anything? Anybody know?
depends what he's asking for
giants#1 : 10/11/2019 9:49 am : link
He's on pace for 13+ sacks and almost 30 QBHits. Will he expect to get paid like an elite edge rusher ($16M+ per)? Or will they be able to extend him for closer to $12M per? Not sure I'm willing to go to $16+ after just one good year.

I think only the signing bonus portion would and they could probably structure that so that it doesn't hit this years cap.
he was fantastic last night
Justlurking : 10/11/2019 9:55 am : link
real solid edge rusher. Smart player. All over the field.
He's 28 and playing well
mrvax : 10/11/2019 10:05 am : link
Decent LBs are really hard to find. I'd consider offering a 3 year deal unless the Giants suddenly find themselves loaded with good linebacker talent. (Which isn't likely.)
Looks good
ron mexico : 10/11/2019 10:09 am : link
Would be happy to retain him at a reasonable cost this offseason
Decent ER
Beer Man : 10/11/2019 10:14 am : link
I hope they keep him and find another effective ER that can compliment him from the other side.
Depends on
Rong5611 : 10/11/2019 10:18 am : link
Bettcher's status. If he's back and they play his scheme, Golden is certainly could be a guy they want to bring back based on what I've seen.

If they change coordinators, its possible they go back to a 4-3 or another scheme. Is Golden the right guy for that? I don't know.

Let's let the year play out and see what happens.
BTW
Rong5611 : 10/11/2019 10:19 am : link
I'm not sure we rely on Carter to be "the guy". He hasn't shown me he can do that. At least not yet.

We will need to invest in pass rush regardless of his status.
a guy who's gonna get paid in a big way
Greg from LI : 10/11/2019 10:20 am : link
Provided he stays healthy.
had one double digit sack season already
bluepepper : 10/11/2019 10:20 am : link
on his way to another. Guys like that can command a whole lot of money in the open market. Will be surprised if he doesn't test the waters.
Bring him back. Please
Blue21 : 10/11/2019 10:21 am : link
.Gonna need him going forward

extend him now then. He and Lawrence have been the best players on D
Golden
stretch234 : 10/11/2019 10:23 am : link
He is a guy who can apply pressure on the QB - you never have enough of them on a D
I think it's going to be tough to re-sign him
Greg from LI : 10/11/2019 10:23 am : link
Just my hunch.

Our best bet will probably be to let him walk for a comp pick, but with all our newly found cap space I don't think we will be in the running for comp picks. We will be signing a lot of FA's this year.
Good player, not high end
JonC : 10/11/2019 10:25 am : link
thus the cost will be an issue, imo.
A functioning stopgap ER

Looks like a player...
Metnut : 10/11/2019 10:31 am : link
if he can be extended reasonably, then I'm up for it. If not, then let's start playing the comp pick game.

Considering his injury history, he may jump at a big payday if it’s on the table. That’s the only reason I am hopeful.

You mean the guy with the strip sack that lead to Golden's TD?
He was chasing Brady around quite a bit.
He's playing well. He's not one of the best pass rushers, but he's a
Ira : 10/11/2019 10:54 am : link
good one. I expect he'll be offered a fair contract in the off season.
I'd like to see him retained
LakeGeorgeGiant : 10/11/2019 10:54 am : link
so long as the cost doesn't get crazy.

They still need to spend a high pick on a pass rusher imo. Carter has shown improvement. Ximinis has shown promise. I'd still load up the position.
The big issue is we need a difference maker at Edge
JonC : 10/11/2019 10:58 am : link
biggest hole on the team if they're going to deploy this scheme.
he's a keeper, the best we have
gtt350 : 10/11/2019 11:05 am : link
the effort on his score is all you need to know
Golden is solid
Rudy5757 : 10/11/2019 11:09 am : link
unfortunately he is our #1 rusher and I dont think he is a #1 type. Always plays with great effort which is what you want and I would sign him back because you need to start to build that foundation. Ideally I think he is a rotation type and or your #2 guy.
Let him go
armstead98 : 10/11/2019 11:30 am : link
He's going to be too expensive and not in the long term plans. Let him sign somewhere and get a comp pick for him, probably a 3rd or 4th.

Smart signing by Gettlemen even if just for the comp pick.
The good thing
Lines of Scrimmage : 10/11/2019 11:53 am : link
is that the Giants have him this year. So they can evaluate his leadership as well.

The real big advantage is the Medical people hopefully know how much of a risk he is moving forward with that knee.
He's playing well
Torrag : 10/11/2019 11:56 am : link
Seems to have found his groove. Had a sack and some pass rush and was good at the PoA. Since he's here on a prove it deal we'll need to explore the free agent market and compare his impact and cost vs the field and make a decision. I'd have him back at a friendly number if it made sense in the total team cap allotment.
I think we have
santacruzom : 10/11/2019 12:12 pm : link
a future 3rd round compensatory pick.
A good player who is going to be a free agent at end of year
Vanzetti : 10/11/2019 12:28 pm : link
So basically nothing.

And Giants will not get a comp pick because they will be signing free agents with all their cap space.

So, basically, both Gulden and Mayo are honing their skills for other teams and increasing their price tag. They do nothing for the Giants future
'They do nothing for the Giants future'
Torrag : 10/11/2019 12:50 pm : link
...maybe include a modifier like unless we retain one or both of them? Not impossible eh? Mayo particularly is only 26 years old so his future has potential.
they can let him go
Dave : 10/11/2019 12:53 pm : link
and put stupar in his spot
we have
larryinnewhaven : 10/11/2019 1:11 pm : link
a way more productive Olivier Vernon who actually finishes when he gets within 5 feet of a qb
Golden is like the 2nd guy
George from PA : 10/11/2019 8:10 pm : link
Osi to a Strahan
As his knee heals he seems to be getting stronger
.McL. : 10/11/2019 8:20 pm : link
He has made an impression on me.

I'm hopeful that he can stay healthy and be resigned. But what happened with Vernon should be a cautionary tale. Don't overspend.
He's looked good.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 10/11/2019 8:26 pm : link

...
christian : 10/11/2019 9:30 pm : link
Golden is the perfect player to sign to a 2 year fully guaranteed contract. I'd offer him a 2/25M extension with no bullshit included.
I think he’s a near lock to return
djm : 10/11/2019 9:41 pm : link
Giants signed him once which means they want to sign him again. He’s having a good year. Giants have money to spend. He’s coming back.
He's exactly what Betcher said he is.
BlueLou'sBack : 10/12/2019 12:36 am : link
Not the most talented guy, not the quickest, twitchiest, most powerful or shifty. None of those traits infuse him. But he's got a little of all of them, and he's one of the highest effort guys we've had on D for awhile. Consistently, every play it seems, max effort.

You can win with players like Golden, a lot of them. We need more guys like him. I think Lawrence and Tomlinson are similar, with Lawrence of course having a rather unique profile of size and strength.

But Betcher said exactly that about Golden. He's firing 110% all the time. Nice player.
Hope that
darren in pdx : 10/12/2019 11:29 am : link
he is resigned. Golden and Carter are good, they will be more consistently disruptive when they acquire someone else that's hopefully even better and demands more attention from offenses.
