As my luck would have it, about 90% of my best college buddies are from the Boston area, all hard core Pats fans. Over the years, the NY-Boston chatter has gotten a little nasty now and then, but at this point it’s all in good fun.
Anyway, was out with 2 of them to watch the game last night, and trading texts with several others...a sampling of their take on Jones and the Giants from during and after the game:
“In a rare case of unbiased fandom, I have to say the Duke kid looks good.”
“You’ve got to be fired up, you guys have found your next QB”
“Your rookie has taken some shots, and keeps getting back up”
“I can’t name any of your receivers besides Tate, but were they any good Jones would have hit on a lot more plays”
“I think we got lucky Saquon isn’t playing”
Generally, they were all pretty amazed with how tough a game the Giants gave the Pats last night, and think the Giants are on the rise.
I know we’re all sick of moral victories and playing hard in losses, so whatever...but it was interesting to hear how impressed they were with Jones. Especially when he didn’t have that great a game.
Right after Brady & Bill pack it in, that spot you went to will be a ghost bar again at 1PM on Sundays.
most of the chatter was obnoxious pre-game Pats chatter.
During and after the game all I got was:
After the 1st Q:
and after the game:
crickets from the rest of the crew which is a good thing.
I’ll say too, my friends, who are hard core Pats fan and actually watched football before this Belichick golden era, Pats fans are living in a bubble. They think that this Pats show has something to do with “ownership” and that this magic carpet is gonna fly without Hoodie, Earnie and Tawmy. It ain’t. I was joking with them that I was gonna short the real estate area Gillette because it’s gonna tank right after the magic three retire.
The thing about Jones, and how most little Pats fans seem to know this, even if DJ is legit, and we’re a long way from knowing that, there’s no telling if the Giants will be able to put the right coach and personnel around him. People don’t realize, and especially Pats fans don’t realize, how hard it is to win in the NFL.
100% fact. That game is what Jones needs to get better. Not shredding bad defenses, even if he is a rookie.
I hope they balance the risk versus reward when throwing. He will learn this in short order imo.
The Patriots had really tight coverage and it appeared that he was trying to "fit some passes" as his progressions determined this is the best I have.
