It's become evident to me that Alex Tanney brings something behind scenes that Eli Manning does not. Could be breaking down film of upcoming opponents. Could be something more.
Again, I'd make him QB coach because I would use the roster spot elsewhere. But they want him as QB3.

I simply cannot fathom the need to carry Alex Tanney as a third QB. I get that the #Giants value his influence on Daniel Jones, but if that’s the case, make him the QB coach. You’re hurting depth and flexibility at other positions by keeping him on the 53.

what you can/cant fathom means absolutely jack shit.
I'm not even mad that they brought Tanney back but they're keeping Hilliman over Walter? Hilliman has had two terrible fumbles in 3 games on just 30 carries and he is safe? How about holding him accountable and releasing the kid? We can find dozens of other backs that can do better than 3 yards per carry.
Maybe it is just that they are holding Tanney because Â
as Jones future backup seems like a very poor move. Eventually, the Giants are going to be expected to win games, if God forbid DJ misses say 3-4 weeks, Tanney doesn't give you a chance to win games. The Giants should look at someone like Taysom Hill to back up DJ.

This so much. Perfect time to make a statement cut. He brings nothing to the table and two fumbles in 30 touches when you bring nothing to the table? I hate DG for making me hate Hilliman, I"m sure he's a perfectly good guy, but that doesn't mean he belongs on an NFL roster. I really like what DG has done, but this is fucking ponderous.
RE: Maybe it is just that they are holding Tanney because Â
Once Eli is gone next year they will only carry Jones and Tanney. They must like Tanney as the backup to Jones.
If the Giants feel comfortable with Tanney as the primary backup to a mobile QB like Jones then I will be very concerned about the decision makers. If they value his knowledge so much then make him a coach as others have suggested numerous times. This team needs a better backup than Jones.
There are plenty of options on the FA market. Case Keenum, Chase Daniel, Mike Glennon, Matt Moore, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Blake Bortles are better options. Hell I would rather have Geno Smith than Tanney as the primary backup. If they want to keep Tanney as the 3rd again fine but there is no reason why he should be the primary backup.
Ryan Tannehill would be the perfect backup to Jones Â
but I didn't list him because I think he will be too expensive. If he was willing to sign a 1 year deal for $5-6 million I would be thrilled to have him as Jones' backup.

Yep. In my non-football opinion, I'd think the ideal backup QB would be one with a similar but diminished skill set to the starter. That's probably why I don't have an NFL job.

We need Coughlin back foaming at the mouth at a RB fumble. Heck Slayton was giving Zimmer an aneurysm.

What about the oppurtunity to develop a young backup QB to trade??
as Jones future backup seems like a very poor move. Eventually, the Giants are going to be expected to win games, if God forbid DJ misses say 3-4 weeks, Tanney doesn't give you a chance to win games. The Giants should look at someone like Taysom Hill to back up DJ.
Tanney is not necessarily DJs future backup. Check back next year.
He's here because:
He knows the system.
He knows his place, as a mentor and not a threat to DJ.
The remote possibility that Eli gets traded he can step
play if DJ were to go down.
We're still in transition and the playoff chances this
year are remote.
Lauletta is gone because he was not a team player, he would not have been a mentor to DJ, management wanted to remove any appearance of competition at QB and with DJ being developed Lauletta would have been on the back burner.
Just in case anyone asked.
That was quicker than I thought, geez I thought it would be next week. He must be 'special' in the QB room folks.
He said with tongue firmly planted in cheek...
Come on guys stop bitching already. We are overflowing with talent Â

Well, Art, perhaps what Tanney brings is that he’ll definitely be around this year? Or there’s some concern that Daniel could get seriously injured.
Eli is not as washed up as some people think and there is real interest from a contender that needs a QB with experience. That's why Tanney is sticking around.
Today is Eli if any of you are buying this garbage that Tanney can possibly bring more knowledge and teaching skills then Eli is just stupidity. Now ask yourself this question Jones is the QB for the present and future neither Eli or Tanney are the real backup next year. Most of us don’t even know why Tanney is still on the team he surly did not earn a spot. So this is a team in full rebuild mode why is there not a young QB on the practice squad being groomed to one day be the backup going forward.
The real danger is it seems the plan is to bring our franchise back week after next since they cut the replacement for him this week. Look this is a team which might win 4-6 games being kind you don’t trade draft picks for this year. However we are desperate for a third back or second back why not offer a 2021 third or fourth round pick for a young HB who is under control for two years or more. We presently have a WR and RB in concussion windows one who has now been placed there more than once. The present process is almost once in the individual is very high rate to placed in concussion evaluation once again and this process is not a short time process the second time around.

Nobody is going to sign Tanney. If there was a team interested in Eli and the Giants agreed to the trade they could just sign Tanney off the street. If by some miracle another team did sign Tanney the Giants could just sign Lauletta off the Eagles practice squad if they needed a backup badly. There is no risk of Tanney being signed by another team.
RE: I'll always remember Walter's memorable debut Â
If I see him play another snap, I'm going to lose my mind. He's like Andre Williams.
Hilliman Makes Orleans Darkwa look like Gayle Sayers
He isn't and NFL back period . They should have brought in a vet the moment Barley went down . No excuse !
By at least a half a dozen posters on the "Tanney has been cut" thread.
It seemed pretty obvious that they only wanted Walter as insurance for the Pats game and that Tanney would be back.
I'm also assuming that the Giants not only value Tanney "in the room" but they are also looking at him as a backup QB for next year when Eli is gone. Which is why the beats' calls to make Tanney the QB coach don't make any sense.
RE: RE: Maybe it is just that they are holding Tanney because Â
He's been around the league as a backup for years, so the Giants aren't alone. Obviously he has NFL value. And it's not as if he's aged out of his usefulness.
Next year Tanney can serve as the primary backup. At some point, maybe next year, maybe the year after, the Giants will use a Day 3 pick on a developmental prospect (like Lauletta, Webb, Nassib, etc) but even then they would likely prefer a veteran QB as primary backup.
p.s.--We know very little about Tanney and what he brings to the table compared to what Shurmur knows. And Shurmur didn't just fall off the turnip truck. He knows QBs and knows how to maximize their value (just ask Case Keenum!). If he thinks Tanney deserves a roster spot, we should try to figure out what it is he sees in him, rather than just dismiss him as a fool.
The roster has holes everywhere and with Ele 'in the room'... Â

If the Giants plan on drafting a developmental QB in the 2020 draft then it makes more sense to keep Tanney. However, a team with playoff aspirations shouldn't have Tanney as the primary backup when their starting QB can run like Jones. If Jones is out 2-3 games then Tanney is not someone you want starting.
Now there are a few very good backup options available next year. That doesn't even include vets like Ryan Fitzpatrick who are likely to be cut. Case Keenum makes too much sense IMO.
Alex Tanney signed a 2 year, $2,150,000 contract with the New York Giants, including a $75,000 signing bonus, $75,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $1,075,000.
How much does a QB coach make? I can’t imagine it’s alot
And Jones' worst game as a pro was without Tanney's leadership and great mind. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!
