QB Daniel Jones Conference Call -- October 11, 2019

Q: You talked to us about the interceptions last night and some of the decisions, but after watching it back on film and going through meetings, what are some of your major takeaways from what you can correct in that game?
A: I guess my thoughts are pretty similar to what they were after the game. I think each one of those plays, each one of those mistakes are different problems and need to be addressed independently. The first one was a late force. The second one, I need to get rid of the ball and throw it away sooner. Then the third one was just a bad decision and a bad read. Definitely things to learn.

Q: Could you just talk real quick about the value that Alex Tanney brings to the QB room and what he’s meant to you as a mentor since you’ve been here?
A: Yeah, Alex has been a huge help for me. He’s obviously been in the NFL for a while and knows the game really well. He’s a super smart guy, someone I have a great relationship with and have leaned on to prepare and to get ready to play. With him and Eli (Manning) in there, I think we have a special room, a special group and I really appreciate all the help from those two guys.

Q: What does Alex bring to the table that maybe Eli doesn’t? What does he do a little bit differently?
A: Everyone is going to have different ideas and different thoughts. I think it’s just the fact that we have another person in there sharing thoughts. Another person in there thinking through things and to talk through things. Just different perspectives. When you have smart people with different perspectives, guys who’ve seen a lot and guys who know the game really well, that just helps prepare and helps me feel comfortable going into the game.

Q: Can you talk about the balance between being aggressive and being smart, and just trying to keep the ball out of harm’s way?
A: That’s a fine line. That’s something I need to do better. I think trusting what I see, trusting what we’ve prepared and the looks we’re expecting, and to decide whether to attack something, whether to maybe throw the ball away or check it down. Those are definitely things I need to get better at.

Q: Have you ever played in games that were as windy as last night? Was the wind that much of a factor for you?
A: I don’t know if I necessarily remember a game, but we have windy days here at practice. I certainly have some experience from that and those conditions. I think that’s something that we’re used to and we have to be able to deal with.

Q: This weekend is sort of the first chance to kind of catch your breath and lift your head up after you were named the starter about three weeks and three days ago. Are you going to do anything to sort of reflect or look forward? How are you going to attack this extended period here before the next game?
A: I think this is an opportunity to look forward. A chance to look at Arizona and start getting prepared. It’s a couple days off, and yeah, I’ll use the time to rest a little bit. It’s about looking forward and getting ready for next week.

Q: A lot of coaches talk about how you’re very good at not making the same mistakes twice and correcting your mistakes. You’re not grading yourself on a curve, but do you look at these interceptions and kind of realize, well some of these are going to be growing pains, and how important is it for you to put some of these mistakes away and not duplicate them in the future?
A: That’s the biggest thing for me, is to prevent making a mistake twice. I don’t think the fact that I’m young or the fact that I haven’t played much, it isn’t an excuse. I don’t think that helps. I’m not going to use that to help myself feel better. But there are still really bad mistakes, things I can’t afford to do. But like you said, the challenge is I have to be able to learn from those and to prevent them from happening again.

Q: There was definitely a feeling in the locker room last night that even in losing, there were some positive things that came out of it. Obviously, you had the Super Bowl champions on the ropes in the first half. I just wonder where you think you can take this and last night forward as a team?
A: Like I said last night, we came into the game expecting to win the game. Maybe other people were surprised, but I don’t think we were. We have a good football team. I don’t think we’re going to let this affect our confidence. When you look at last night, a lot of credit goes to the defense and how well they played. They kept us in the game. On offense, we know we can play better and we have to play better. We expected to be in the game, we expected to win the game. Obviously, we’re disappointed, but there are things to learn from it.

Q: They say when rookie quarterbacks come into the league, they’re going to see things they’ve never seen before. I was wondering, you go against Bill Belichick last night, and even Mike Zimmer the week before, another very well respected defensive mind, how much did you see stuff that you’ve never seen before in these past two games?
A: Yeah, there were some different looks here and there. Every team is going to do things a little bit differently than maybe what you’ve seen. But I think, for the most part, teams are going to… what they do well is what they’re going to do. They’re going to play to their strengths. I felt like both games, we were well prepared. We had a good idea of what to expect and knew what we wanted to do going in. Yeah, both good defenses, but we have to play better. I have to play better.

Q: Going back to what you said earlier about getting that physical break to use this time over the next couple of days, I’m just curious, the way you’re made, the way last night played out, as eager as I’m sure you are to get back out there on the field, do you need a mental break, or are you the opposite, where you take the rest physically, but also maybe dig in a little bit more on the mental side to be ready for next week against Arizona?
A: There’s a balance to it. We’ll get a little bit of a break, mentally and physically, but like I said, I think this is also an opportunity to start preparing and to get ahead a few days on Arizona. It’ll be a rest in that it’s not a normal weekend and that we’ll have a lot of time off. But I’ll be sure to use it to prepare.

Q: How soon will you, if you haven’t already, start digging in personally on Arizona?
A: Yeah, we’ve already started a little bit today. I’ll do some more today and tomorrow.

Smart guy - I liked a lot of his answers. He doesn't speak like a rookie.
He’s a keeper.

really enjoying watching him develop....he's the real deal

"we expected to win"... some great responses here from DJ
Nothing is a slam dunk of course,

but this kid has the skillset and temperament to have a solid to possibly great career.

No Well regarded (by those qualified to assess such things) Giants QB rookie has looked as promising as DJ, imho and that includes Simms(an injury waiting to happen the first 4-5 years) and Eli.
Mentally he has it

I don't mean reading defenses but just the way he carries himself. Plus he has some amazing accuracy and enough arm strength. He should at the very least be a good QB for a long time.
He learned to throw it away that night

After the 2nd interception (definitely in the 2nd half), I noticed that he was throwing the ball away much earlier than he had in the previous 3.5 games.

Really stinks that even though he buys time no one can still get open.

Engram and Shepard will

with a depleted LB core (and not particularly great to begin with at full strength) played above their talent level until they ran out of gas, which is commendable. The offense performed kind of predictably with their top skill players out (Barkley, Engram, Shepard, and Gallman, I'd even add Coleman to that list just to see if he was going to put all together). Jones is showing a lot of good things, and hopefully the mistakes become fewer and farther between as he grows, but it's plain to see that he has all of the tools to be a good QB in this league.
