I don't think Mel & Tim had a hit song other than this

Backfield in motion, yeah,
I'm gonna have to penalize you
Backfield in motion, baby,
You know that's against the rules.
Off side and holdin, yeah,
You ought a be ashamed of yourself baby
Offside and holdin yeah,
Holdin on to some one else
You know you're cheatin baby,
Ffakin the bout
You know you're balking, baby,
(oh yeah) strike three you're out
And I caught you with
Backfield in motion, yeah,
I'm gonna have to penalize you
Backfield in motion, baby,
You know that's against the rules.

First down you start cheatin' on me
Second down, I was too blind to see
Third down, you know I love you so
Fourth down, baby I got to let you go,
Cus I caught you with your
Backfield in motion, yeah,
I'm gonna have to penalize you
Backfield in motion, baby,
You know that's against the rules.
Now you will see, ah yeah, just how I felt
You beat me to the punch honey,
But you hit me below the belt
And I caught you with your
Backfield in motion, yeah,
I'm gonna have to penalize you
Backfield in motion, baby,
You know that's against the rules.
Backfield in motion, backfield in motion...
Backfield in motion, backfield in motion...

Blind Man in the Bleachers by David Geddes
yalebowl : 10/12/2019 6:42 am : link
He's just the blind man in the bleachers
To the local home town fans
And he sits beneath the speakers
Way back in the stands
And he listens to the play-by-play
Just waiting for one name
He wants to hear his son get in the game
But the boy's not just a hero
He's strictly second team
Though he runs each night for touchdowns
In his daddy's sweetest dreams
He's gonna be a star someday
Though you might never tell
But the blind man in the bleachers knows he will
It's the last game of the season on a Friday night at home
And no one knows the reason
Why the blind man didn't come
And his boy looks kinda nervous
Sometimes turns around and stares
Just as though he sees the old man sittin' there
The local boys are tryin' but they slowly lose their will
Another player's down and out
And is carried from the field
At halftime in the locker room
The kid goes off alone
And no one sees him talkin' on the phone
And the game's already started
When he gets back to the team
And half the crowd can hear his coach yell
"Where the hell you been?"
"Just gettin' ready for the second half"
Is all he'll say
"'Cause now you gotta let me in to play"
And without another word, he turns
And runs into the game
And through the silence on the field
Loudspeakers call his name
It'll make the local papers
How the team came from behind
When they saw him playin' out his heart to win
And when the game was over
The coach asked him to tell
What was it he was thinkin' of
That made him play so well
"Well, you knew my dad was blind, " he said
"Tonight, he passed away
It's the first time that my father's seen me play"
It's the last game of the season on a Friday night at home
And no one knows the reason
Why the blind man didn't come

Drop Kick Me, Jesus
(Chorus)
Drop kick me, Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end, neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me, Jesus through the goal posts of life
Make me, oh make me, Lord more than I am
Make me a piece in your master game plan
Free from the earthly temptations below
I’ve got the will, Lord if you’ve got the toe
(Chorus)
Bring on the brothers who’ve gone on before
And all of the sisters who’ve knocked on your door
All the departed dear loved ones of mine
Stick them up front in the offensive line
(Chorus 2x)
Oh, drop kick me, Jesus through the goal posts of life

It is more than worth your time to listen to every album by him. Solo, with his band The 400 Unit, and when he was with Drive By Truckers. He's a phenomenal song writer. In my humble opinion, the best of his generation.

Thanks for the link. James Iha played guitar in the studio, so the song was rarely (if ever) played in concert.

Used in a 2005 NFL promo.

According to Adam Schlesinger:

I had the title and the concept first. The title is a cliché used by football announcers when a quarterback is well protected. I thought it would be fun to take it literally, and see if I could write a song in which time actually seems to slow down during one tiny moment in a football game.

It was admittedly sort of a hokey idea on paper, but I remembered a wistful Paul Simon baseball song called “Night Game,” which is not really about sports at all, and I strove for a bit of that feeling.

I worked on the lyrics to my idea first, and then tried to set it to music that implied slow motion. When the N.F.L. later licensed this song for a spot featuring classic slow-motion footage of quarterbacks, I could not have been happier, because I felt like that idea must have come across.

song in the movie Wildcats.

It’s the sport of kings, better than Diamond Rings
That’s why we’re here to sing, football.
Sunday in the snow, referee’s whistle blows
We've been warriors toe-to-toe, football.

For Old Timers, do you remember the names?
Like Bronco Nagurski and Nightrain Lane,
Bulldog Turner, my man Sam Huff
In the snow and mud, they were still real tough.
Crazylegs Hirsch and remember Raymond Berry?
Ask me if they hit hard and I’ll say “Very!”
Paul Christian, Buddy Young, Lenny Moore
It’s them I adore, they seem to always score.
Ed Sprinkle, defensive end for those years
Gene “Big Daddy” Lipscomb was the man to fear!
You had Steven Van Buren and Otto Graham
Johnny Unitas had the arm of a Superman!
We had Charley Trippi and Gino Marchetti
If you’re searching for a champion, they’re your best bet!
Wish I could quarterback like Johnny Lujack
Or even Sid Luckman as a matter of fact.
Do you remember Red Grange, the Galloping Ghost,
He could do a ninety-five running coast-to-coast.
You had Norm Van Brocklin, a real great player
So slick with his moves that he could be mayor
Y.A. Tittle, Ollie Matson, Hey!
I remember all those guys, from back in the day.

It’s the sport of Kings, better than Diamond Rings
That’s why we’re here to sing, football.
Sunday in the snow, referee’s whistle blows
We’ve been warriors toe-to-toe, football

Guessing that when Rofer Waters wrote the song he was talking about buying a football team in the context of an English soccer team - not an NFL franchise.

Still, I wish I was quick enough to post this song on this thread.
