He averaged 4 minute 33 second miles for 26 miles.
For perspective, if you run a 3 hour marathon, you’ll be in the top 2% of all men in the race. He averaged 13mph — next time you’re on a treadmill, get a taste of what 13mph feels like ....
Maybe not quite a Bob Beamon moment — it was an exhibition geared towards this gentleman succeeding — but still pretty damn cool.

It's seems like a fantastic training exercise though, and I would be surprised to see him break 2 hours in a real race if he starts pushing himself in this way.

Only course without preset conditions (like this project) and a world major, would be at Berlin. Lets see him do it there. NY and Boston you'd never see this occur because in ny the bridges and Boston 16 thru 20 mile "heartbreak hill" those 2 i'd highly doubt the 2 hr barrier broken there
Technology of the racing flats today, nike zoomx vaporfly has shown and proven to cut time by its design.
Averaging 4:33 is insane

that time in HS is tremendous. did you get
a track scholorship?
The best I ever did was a 5:12 min./mile for a 5K. I can't even fathom running 26 miles no less at that sustained pace. I had a friend in college who was into distance running. He would run 20-30 miles before dinner a few times a week.
The next% and vaporfly have a carbon fiber insert that gives the runner energy return on every footstrike. In a regular shoe the energy you send into the ground dissipates from the foam to road and there is energy loss when the foam bounces back in your foot on every strike. The plate helps store that energy for the bounce back better. So basically his foot is on the ground less and his quads do less work lifting his foot up.

I tried to explain this to a non athlete once. He didn't believe me that marathoners "run."
He thought they jogged 26 miles. He was a short, swarthy guy. I tried to explain to him that marathoners - I have a friend who is a good one, not professional level, but serious - run the entire 26 miles faster than my little swarthy friend could "run" a 40 yard dash.
He just didn't believe that was at all possible!

Some more perspective for non-runners — on your average high school cross country meet, one of our wiry, superfast sons might run at 5K at a 5:30 mile pace

If you really want to blow his mind, tell him about ultra running.
Zach Bitter set the 100 mile world record not long ago. 100 miles at a 6:47 pace. Jim Walmsley did 50 miles at a sub 6 minute pace.
People run 100 mile races, hell, 200 and 300 mile races at incredible paces and on rugged terrain.
That's down, across the bottom, up, down, across the bottom again and back up.

Also owns the course record for Western States.
They might improve your time from 9 hours to 8 hours and 55 minutes. :)
