LB for next year

frankmihs : 10/12/2019 12:26 pm
Are we better off next year then we thought? There are a thousand threads about needs for next year. I think we need to remember that no team has studs at every position. Great teams have role players that are consistent. Ex. Kavika Mitchell. Can we go into next year with Mayo and Connely inside and be a legit playoff team?

Its too early to tell but we might be able to go into next year with Golden, Carter and Xmen along with push from Dex and the rest of the DL. At this point I would still like a stud Edge Rusher and if thats the case Golden is probably not here. If he keeps up the pace he is going to ask for 13+. If we give him that plus 16 on another FA Edge rusher, is that good asset allocation? I guess alot depends on the progression of Carter.

REALLY good defenses have that ONE guy who scares the hell out of the offense. We don't have that yet. We need an elite-level pass rusher.

The Giants seem to be putting up good pressure, hits, and sack numbers.

I completely agree adding a kick ass defender is a good idea.

But I'd argue the Giants need a FS who can patrol the field and make QB pay for mistakes.

Can you even imagine an elite edge rusher paired with Dexter developing into an elite interior monster?

Sure would cure a lot of ills....

Exactly. An impact player, or better two.

I think Big Dex can reach that point, and be the foundation of the defense. But, yes an elite pass rusher is needed badly.
big three needs on defense
LakeGeorgeGiant : 10/12/2019 1:04 pm : link
- top tier pass rusher
- rangey starting-caliber Free safety
- ILB to pair with Connelly

I'm still not sure where Love will fit into the equation next year, safety? Can he play Nickel at this level?

Another comp pick

I don't see DG re-signing Markus Golden to a high dollar contract for various reasons, one being a lucrative FA deal with another team could net a 3rd rd compensatory pick for the Giants in 2021.

The Giants will most likely have around 80 million in cap space. They'll probably sign a good amount of free agents. Highly unlikely they get any comp picks.

In most years it would make sense to let Golden walk, but with a ton of influx in cash there is no way we get comp picks next year. Probably a smart idea to attempt to resign Golden as long as they think he isn't a contract year guy. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't

FWIW, Golden is starting to get there. Seems like he is there quite often.
In terms of what this defense is lacking...
Torrag : 10/12/2019 1:55 pm : link
a roaming FS with range, ball skills and some nasty is nowhere to be found. It's a skillset Bethea, Thomas and Peppers don't possess. I'm clueless as to why Love hasn't been utilized yet. He can't be any worse than what we've seen so far and could be a damn sight better.
Arguably, you need 2
idiotsavant : 10/12/2019 2:00 pm : link
Two rangey speedy free safeties as we don't have any right now and you don't want to predicate your next season on any one player. In case of injury .

In addition, the killer ap in today's nfl may well be to have two of those on the field at the same time. Assume you can still put Pepper's or Thomas in the field at the same time as your one great ball getting fs.

Similarly, with ILB, nice find in connelly, but momentum was lost to some extent when he got injured.

So it comes down to value early. ILB, or even edge isn't out of the question, but why force it if value isn't clear?

With regards to OT, spend the next -few years- building up true OL centric run oriented game planning to get better value from your existing OL broadly and stop trying to go straight to the fancy shit with Danny Jones from day 1. That will come once the basics and great running are in place.

Even DT. If you happen to be on the clock when one of those game changing quick step pass rush DTs are there, pair him with Dex and that's a unique D to face right there.

It's not "edge,wr,ot" every year.

I said in another thread already, I think Golden is good and proving that he's back from his injury. I'd like to see the team re-sign him to maybe a 3-year contract if he doesn't ask for too much, and then get their elite guy in the draft or FA (don't know who is available upcoming). Having at least one elite guy that scares offenses is going to make Golden and Carter much more effective and with Lawrence leading the way for them.

I'm not sure chasing comp picks is the right way to make this team better. They need to eventually win football games at some point. Cant do that without players.

Good point, although I think the FA spending will be far less than many want.
Look at it this way. Golden could get about $1 million perr sack.

Golden, bring in Barrett or Yannick (both young). Hopefully Connelly comes back healthy and we find him a running mate in the draft to play along side him.

Except Giants likely have 80+ million in cap space and this any free agent losses will be negated by our own signings

That's a good point as previously acknowledged, as is the need to "step up" and invest in talent, but for the sake of argument, which FAs might the Giants lose?

-Golden, Thomas, Remmers
-Pierre, Mayo, Haley, Coleman, R. Sheperd
-and, dare I say, Eli

I agree it that it doesn't make sense to live by comp picks, but they're part of the decision-making process when it comes to deciding on whether to re-sign. When the Giants pick around #100 in the 2020 draft as compensation for Collins, the decision on Golden will have been made.
Mayo can have Stupar position
George from PA : 10/12/2019 8:06 pm : link
But Mayo is not a starting MLB.

He might have had some nice plays....but he had several WTF plays as well.
We need a linebacker that can run
djm : 10/12/2019 8:50 pm : link
hit like a truck, rush the qb a bit and cover. Pepper Johnson. Thatís who we need. Edge rushers are always needed but Iím not too worried there. I want that linebacker.... add him to the Connelly mix and now youíve got something. To me itís FS and ILB. Those are the holes.
Ogletree is a stop gap
djm : 10/12/2019 8:54 pm : link
Heís not terrible but heís aging and costly.

Iíd be shocked if the giants let golden get away. Carter and Ximines are in the mix. Iíd think the giants use the draft once again in 2020 to address pass rush help, and FA to find that LB/FS.

As of now the Giants have 61 million, and they still have to pay out earned bonuses, so expect it to be a bit lower than that.

Comp picks are good, but not every year. Next year we should be net buyers. So don't worry about comp picks.
Draft Dylan Mack

From Bama next year. Yea heís hurt, I think out with a torn acl, but that shouldnít deter us from drafting him in the second rd next year, if we go WR or Edge in the first.

+1 ...

I was thinking more of an ER than LB as the OP suggested.

Remember our DLs of 2007 and 2011?

Tom Brady - "It is like trying to throw through trees"

We are almost there with the DL.

There are a handful of good, young (under 30) ILB's who will be hitting free agency next year, assuming they're not re-signed by their current teams. I figure the Giants might be in the market for one. We'll see.

I like Connelly, but what worries me is that it always seems like it takes two years to fully recover from an ACL tear. So I don't expect much from him next year, even if he's good-to-go medically.
There's an LB who plays for Colorado

Who might fit what this coach is looking for, name is Nate Landman

I'm also a fan of Ogletree. Hopefully they'll keep him around.
