John Schmeelk's interview with Daniel Jeremiah

JoeFootball : 10/12/2019 1:25 pm
Good interview with 2 good nuggets. First Schmeelk says that the Giants got Slayton an eye exam when he got here and he needed contacts, you would think Auburn could have done this.

Second Jeremiah talked about draft success for teams that are turning things around, you need three eventual starters per draft. So far we have 4 from our 2017 draft and 4 from 2018 with multiple guys with potential to step up or be key rotational pieces. Hopefully they all show growth by the end of the year.

This is false

Slayton interviewer this past week on the radio with Banks and was specifically asked this question TWICE to confirm or deny the rumor. Slayton emphatically denied it and was very articulate and credible in doing so.
Thanks for the correction

it seemed like a sloppy error by a big college program.

Still could be true, these guys usually have a bond with the colleges they go to. Maybe he didn't want them to look bad. I doubt it though, as someone that wears contacts, there's too much stuff that pops up that people would notice you can't see far. I remember I first learned it when I was sitting with my dad and I couldn't see the scoreboard time at a hockey game and I had 20/50 vision at the time.

You need to be able to draft jags types, replacement level, slightly below avg starters that can play 30-50 snaps a game every draft

Hitting on #1 even if he’s a star isn’t enough. This is exactly what happened to Reese and got him fired

Who are the Giants 4 starters from the 2017 draft?

Barkley, Hernandez, Hill and Carter.
yeah, 2018 draft, not ‘17
Big Blue '56 : 10/12/2019 3:43 pm : link
.
Jones, Lawrence, Baker, and Connelly
JoeFootball : 10/12/2019 3:48 pm : link
Connelly future is not as clear, still time for the rest of the picks to ascend.
Yeah, I would say 3 starters and one maybe from 2017.
Ivan15 : 10/12/2019 4:19 pm : link
3 starters and 3 maybes from 2018.
A couple of things.
robbieballs2003 : 10/12/2019 6:17 pm : link
1. The word starter in football is stupid. Not every position is the same. Getting a starter on the OL is different than lets say a starter at ILB. If that starter at ILB is not on the field all three downs then that doesn't hold as much value as a guy playing every snap on the OL or even as a rotational pass rusher. So, we need to alter the meaning of starter or come up with a better word.

2. You don't need 3 "starters". You do need, however, a guy that is at least a rotational player. But what if this guy didn't play right away like Carter. Does that mean he wasn't a good pick? Too early to tell.

3. Why is the player "starting"? Is it because he is good or because the team is so desperate for a player he is the best of the crap on the roster. If we drafted Stupar and he starts does that make him a good player, a good pick? Of course not.

4. Bill Polian said that you lose on average 1.5 starters to FA every year so his goal was to get 2 players per draft that would replace those players. If done properly you are ahead of the curve and that is without even factoring in replacing those players through FA. 3 starters? That seems awfully unrealistic to keep up with over a long period of time. Even the best don't do that.

I do agree with the poster above that not all picks will be great but you do need guys like a David Tyree that'll help in ST and be a guy that can step in on offense and eventually make some plays. Yes, we all want every pick to hit but that isn't reality.

There are a lot of things I haven't agreed with Gentlemen over but I don't know how anybody can criticize his drafts since he has been here. You may not agree with the players he chose or what order certain positions went in the draft but in terms of talent and how they have played you cannot criticize him for that. If you wanted a different player then fine. Maybe your player worked out but that doesn't mean he hasn't been successful. We needed to hit on our draft picks regardless of position and he has done just that on a large scale.

Everybody loved Reese's first draft because guys contributed to our SB run. They didn't need to be starters to say that was a successful draft. Long term however guys faded off because of different reasons but one of them being injuries. My point is that they all don't have to be starters to be a successful draft pick. Hell, look at DeOssie. We wanted him as a LB. It didn't work out but to have a guy with his longevity and ability to be great on specials and even make some pro bowls is an example of being worth that pick.
Last 2 drafts have been great

Keep that up....and they will be contenders and competitive for a long time.

Arguing about the term starters is silly.

Barkley, Hernandez, Hill, Carter, Jones, Lawrence, Baker, Slayton, Connerly......even McIntosh, Ballentine, Jones, Xmen will be contributors on this team. These draft have been amazing

Most people were dumbfounded when we drafted Love. I loved it (pun intended). I thought his skillset would be perfect in today's NFL as a FS and potential slot defender. I was ecstatic when that is where the Giants had him playing. But now I am dumbfounded as to why he hasn't been getting any snaps on D so far this year. I hope that changes. It is one thing if the Giants wanted to stabilize their D with a veteran presence back there but Bethea has been pretty awful. Get this kid out there and see what he has. He can be a solution to a pretty big hole on defense.

I couldn't agree more re. Love. Play the kid.
