NFT: New York Rangers vs. Edmonton Oilers - Kakko has Arrived

arcarsenal : 10/12/2019 1:41 pm
First of many goals for our young stud.

1st period winding down. 1-0, NYR.
Rangers playing well
NYerInMA : 10/12/2019 1:42 pm : link
They didn't cash in on that 5v3 earlier in the period, but they came very close a few times.
Flipped it on just in time to see Kakko bury one

Beautiful give and go with Strome!

Solid first period for the boys. Actually could have had more than that one goal - a lot of chances. Especially on the 5v3.

Still - I will take it.

Pretty play. Panarin is really good out there, too.
Sorry!)

Kakko.

Also... this has to be the best our power play has looked since the 90's. Maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but the puck movement and opportunities they generate are above and beyond anything I've seen from this PP unit in as long as I can remember.

Beautiful passes and movement.
Panarin
Jay in Toronto : 10/12/2019 1:55 pm : link
is sooo much fun to watch. Made a great rush up the ice.

I'm also extremely grateful I got to see Kappo's first goal on TV live :)
The power play is operating at an elite level right now
Torrag : 10/12/2019 2:00 pm : link
Best we've seen by the Blueshirts in a long time. It's the driving force for this club so far. Goaltending has also been a plus consistently on a small sample so far. There is potential to be a good defensive transition unit with this group but they'll be up against it in their own zone.
Looks like a natural

Time for NHL to throw out the Scheduler X software from 1998

arcarsenal : 10/12/2019 2:20 pm : link
Another 4 days off after this game.

Maybe there's some sort of reasoning behind the scheduling, but it seems to me that the NHL schedule keeps getting worse and less-sensible each year.

That we can get 17 days into October having played just 3 games when the season started on the 2nd is absolutely absurd.

Faceoff lost and shot through a crowd. Lundqvist had no chance on it.

It is. Weirdo NHL should fix this.
2nd period has been one the Rangers are just trying to survive

Oilers a step ahead all over the ice

Yeah EDM totally controlled that period. Rangers need to step it up in the third.

Worse in the third so far.

Letting him linger at the goal corner during the penalty kill looks looks like a bad idea. Now what may be the losing goal fr EDM.
Rangers

0 for 4 on PP (one against only 3 defenders). Can't win that way.
Disaster

Terrible Play

I really have no idea what Quinn is thinking
Anakim : 10/12/2019 3:46 pm : link
Lias is getting absolutely no ice time. 7 minutes today? When none of the lines were doing well?

Move Strome to the 3rd line wing and demote Fast to the fourth wing. Try Lias as the 2C.
Ghastly 3rd period
Phil in LA : 10/12/2019 3:49 pm : link
McDavid is great, but his team shouldn't get endless whacks at a puck that was saved.
5-0

i'm still not a believer.
Quinn too conservative with the roster assignments
Torrag : 10/12/2019 4:26 pm : link
The team he's assembled to start the season isn't a playoff caliber unit imo. McKegg, Haley and Lemieux all up together? Why? The guys in the minors individually have more talent than all three of these clowns combined.

Defense is atrocious aside from Trouba. As a group these guys don't win puck battles or even contain scoring chances coming off the boards in their own end. No presence in front of the net either. Is there a softer D corps in the league? Embarrassing game for them.

Fast has to be a 4th liner he can't contribute on the scoring sheet at all. Staal is DONE. After 15-20 secs on a shift he can't move at all. Strome on the second line? Seriously? While Chytl rots in the minors. Ugh.

Chytl et al are actually getting a lot of playing time at Wolfpack while the NHL bigs are rotting with the schedule. I'm actually ok with this, provided it doesn't last more than a month or so.

- Defense looks totally disorganized (even Trouba had a really bad moment as he was locked in cement instead of moving his skates on the EDM breakout leading to the goal. Their positioning around their own offensive blue line is lost, EDM had numbers up even before they approached the red line.

- Andersson looked very good in his all-too-brief ice time

- KK: from the Worlds, we knew we was strong on his skates, and along the boards, good puck control, but man that quick flick up, very fast hands

- still not convinced that HL has re-discovered his earlier years. He's fit, that's for sure, but the reflexes and reads not there, albeit he made some very good adjustments
Kakko
FearTheHippo : 10/12/2019 7:39 pm : link
I'm extremely excited to watch him develop, as I don't believe the Rangers have drafted a player of his caliber since Brian Leetch.

That said, through three games Kakko looks a little sluggish to me with the puck on his stick. I think he'll need to develop a more explosive first step if he wants to be a truly elite player in the league. Thankfully that's one area of a player's game that can improve with coaching and training. You can't teach the kind of skill he already possesses.
So did they do away with bye weeks in hockey?
MetsAreBack : 10/12/2019 10:32 pm : link
This schedule is really bizarre - thought this was their bye week but Quinn said they practiced most of the week and he and the players got sick of each other ( he was kind of joking). And now I guess they practice four more days for their next game.

Rangers came back to earth yesterday...
M.S. : 10/13/2019 7:13 am : link

...we have Kakko, but Edmonton has Connor McDavid.
This is what it's going to be this season
Gman11 : 10/13/2019 8:14 am : link
A couple of good games then a couple of bad ones.

Buchnevich is either thinking too much or is deferring to his linemates too much. I can remember a couple of times he had the puck in close and instead of shooting it, tried to pass. Stop it! Shoot the damn puck.

Lundqvist wasn't to blame for this loss. A screened shot he never saw, a deflection off the defender, a puck he thought was under him and was going to get a whistle. He was a bit unlucky. Still, I think the Rangers should see if he'll agree to go to a contender at the trade deadline.

Panarin is the real deal. Not only is he offensively gifted I noticed him more than once busting his ass on the backcheck.

This team needs a second line center. I mean a good one. Maybe Chytil becomes one eventually. Maybe not. It seems like the team has a glut of young d-men in the pipeline. Maybe trade one for a center if Chytil is going to be a better winger than a center.

Prob still thinking too much which is slowing down his game. Still way early to worry

It's just him considering an option. However there's no way he's returning to Traktor, which holds his rights. Would be a different team which means that there is a trade to be made in the KHL.

Brooks says it hasn't been discussed with the team, but I don't think it's a bad thing if he does it.

I think it depends why he's considering it (if it's even true). If he doesn't feel he's ready then I think get him comfortable - maybe it's even a sign of maturity him recognizing he needs to work on his game still. If he's pissed about being sent to the AHL then yeah, it could be bad.
