Pass Rush has improved...

KingBlue : 10/13/2019 8:35 am
Giants have 16 in five games, which is tied for the sixth-most in the NFL. The sacks have been spread out among 10 players with Golden leading the way with five.

Is it something? or nothing?
It's definitely something. Golden turned out to be a great signing.

Lawrence helps on the dl and Ximines has some ability. Our pass rush is much better than I expected before the season.
I agree Ira... it's something.

The Giants were 30th in sacks in 2017 and 31st last year.
Like most other things - too soon to tell

against quality opponents teams have had all day to pass. They looked pretty good against the Pats, whose OL has been problematic and it was a short week.

Some low caliber opponents are coming up - if they're actually good at rushing the passer, they should be able to put up some stats against them.

Didn't they have 3 sacks against the Pats. I'd say that was a quality opponent.
Yes

I mentioned this on another thread it is a positive thing. They are getting after the QB with young players. Just need to add some LBs.

The team as a whole is quality opponent. But their OL is trash this year with Brady a statue in the pocket. We couldn't run Marshall Shithouse out of town fast enough. But he was locking down Brady's blindside. Grading on the sliding scale, I would say our defensive pass rush was terrible against the Pats. We should have been able to torment Brady all night.

I think Lawrence is the biggest reason. When he is in, he gives the an no where to step up. If BJ starts getting some sacks too we may really have something in the middle. I think another disrupted in the middle could lesson the need for an Elite edge. We may just need fast edge rushers that can get upfield quickly like carter.

Yeah, uh, ok.
Itíll be tougher to get to Murray

next week because if his unique mobility, but there may be opportunities. Anyway, itís good to see a semblance of a Pass Rush, but I think the Giants still need that Pass Rusher opposite of Golden that will cause DCs to have sleepless nights. Canít ever have enough pass rushers, especially in this passing league now. Look for the Giants to grab an Edge guy next year to pair with Golden, and thatís if the Giants re-sign Golden, of course.

Teams as a. norm do not accumulate sacks against the better teams. Giants pass rush is better, there are no qualifiers
If a team has a great offense and a great defense...
M.S. : 10/13/2019 9:10 am : link

...then the defense will probably face a minimum of plays.

Therefore, total sacks would be a very misleading stat.

The figure should really be total number of sacks per 100 offensive pass plays. Or, "per" whatever you want it to be.

I think opposing QBs have a lot of time to throw against our offense.
Strange
Andrew in Austin : 10/13/2019 9:10 am : link
Nice to see our pass rush improving (wasn't expecting 6th at this point), but then it really highlights how terrible the secondary is. We are something like 30th in pass defense this year.

Keep in mind that Brady gets the ball out very quickly and the fact that we got to him 3 times, to include a sack fumble, means that the secondary was also doing its job. They work hand in hand. That impressed me the most.

Let's wait until the end of the year to see what Carter, Ximines and Shipper do the rest of the year. I think OT and ILB are bigger needs. Yes pass rush is important, but some inside help would help the QB pressures, too.
After seeing Solder and Remmers flail about, the oline is in more need of help. But as always, grab the best player available at their draft position.
Definitely improved
UConn4523 : 10/13/2019 9:17 am : link
anyone thinking otherwise is lying to themselves. We stunk last year and played plenty of shit teams without much success getting to the QB so I donít buy that as being an excuse for success so far this year.

Not only sacks but pressure. We were an inch away from another sack (likely fumble the way Brady held the ball) on Thursday as well. Sure they disappear for stretches because we donít have an elite rusher but itís much better than last year.

A little misleading on Marshall as they had a TE help him out most of the passing downs. Go back and watch.
Brady has been sacked 10 times in 6 games
UConn4523 : 10/13/2019 9:21 am : link
including 2 games with 0 (one being the Bills). Heís always been good at avoiding the sack despite being a statue. So I donít buy the line excuse either, well not very good it hasnít translated into that many sacks given up outside of the last 2 games (I know they have some injuries now).
The pass rush is better
Gman11 : 10/13/2019 9:45 am : link
but it's not consistent. There are long stretches where they no pressure at all. Still, it's better than what they had last year.
A lot of these sacks are coverage sacks.

I'd agree, I'd say our pass rush is probably middle of the road right now, which is encouraging after what we saw in preseason.
More push from the inside
NikkiMac : 10/13/2019 9:56 am : link
Will help the edge also .
What is killing the defense now is poor tackling by LBs and safeties
Ivan15 : 10/13/2019 10:01 am : link
Too many 3rd down passes get a 1st down on run after catch.

Pass rush is adequate. Coverage is generally adequate. Too many first downs off of short completions that extend drives.
Seems to be a lot of high motor coverage sacks
Coach Red Beaulieu : 10/13/2019 10:19 am : link
And not the basic stunt insta-Ewreck Flowers/Solder sacks.

Is our coverage good??

I tend to agree with you about missing tackles extending drives and stupid penalties.
As good as Golden has been
UConn4523 : 10/13/2019 10:48 am : link
I think Lawrence has been the biggest difference maker so far in the pass rush. On the defensive TD strip sack he took on 3 blockers and still provided push to collapse the pocket. He is just a beast of a human being and if he continues to get better he can be a top DT in the league in the not too distant future.

I'm certain he's a big part of our improved run D, thinking back on last year w/o Snacks and Collins, likely is and will play a big role in our pass rush. Hopefully he turns out to be a 340 lb Justin Smuth.
Lawrence is everything that Snacks
LauderdaleMatty : 10/13/2019 1:56 pm : link
Was IMO and w more of a talent to get to the QB. Between all the youth, Betheaís corpse trying to play FS, and the injures ar LB the pass rush can only be seen as better.
'Pass Rush has improved...'
Torrag : 10/13/2019 2:01 pm : link
Now if they have the brains to replace Haley and Bethea perhaps the actual defense will improve?
Connelly was also a huge loss
UConn4523 : 10/13/2019 2:13 pm : link
sure it was a small sample size but he looked like the best LBer weíve had in years. Potential mid round HR pick if he comes back fully healed.
