Waiting to see this for years. There iit is but not good
That was pretty cool

and I too had never seen that begore...
It had the distance too, just wide right
dpinzow : 10/13/2019 11:03 am : link
teams should actually do more of this when the opportunity presents itself because the chances of making a FG with no rush, even at that length, is higher than twice the chance of scoring on a hail mary
It is actually the correct play from an analytical sense
dpinzow : 10/13/2019 11:07 am : link
most of the time when the opportunity presents itself (which is rare)
I canít recall
Big Al : 10/13/2019 11:13 am : link
seeing the fair catch being made in reasonable position to try it (in recent memory).

It's a pretty rare set of circumstances, but they present themselves a few times a year and we almost always see a team try the hail mary

This, kickers can get close to putting the ball through the uprights on a kickoff from the 35 yd line (75 yards). But when do you ever see a team fair catch a ball on their own 35?

The free kick at that point would have been obvious to any competent NFL coach. I saw it might be coming when they lined up to punt in the end zone with 8 seconds left.
The issue is the other team gets the ball if you miss so there has to
Zeke's Alibi : 10/13/2019 11:44 am : link
be less than five seconds left to attempt it.

To clarify, they can return the fair-catch kick. They don't get it at the spot of the kick.

Today's attempt was the 9th miss since the last successful fair catch kick in 1976.

By the way, an NFL person told me that if you were ahead and the other team was lined up for fair catch kick the best course of action is to take their players off the field (apparently once you line up to do it, you can't change it)

I mean take your players off the field (not their players)
Another note on fair catch kick
ray in arlington : 10/13/2019 11:59 am : link
Belichick passed up the opportunity to try a fair catch kick to win the Super Bowl. He said he knew about it but felt the possibility of a return touchdown was greater than making a 75-yard fair catch kick.
Didn't we try this under Coughlin

Actually, looking it up. We didn't it was unsuccessfully attempted against us by Arizona. I only had a vague recollection of Coughlin looking perplexed.

The idea being that the only thing that can happen from having players on the field is a muffed return or fumble on a return?

yes.
This is a play that can be run
NINEster : 10/13/2019 9:55 pm : link
as an untimed down. You can fair catch it with 0:00 remaining in the half/4th Q/OT period. Useful to know if it ever came down to not having any time remaining.

Must be held like a place kick or drop kicked, no tees allowed.

You get the benefit of no snap, 7 yards longer kick.

The Packers kicker was the closest to making it several years ago. It actually went down the line and fell a little short, but most of these attempts are terrible. I guess they don't truly practice it, or overthink/overkick them.

Anything fair caught inside the 50 is under 60 yards.

7 yards
NINEster : 10/13/2019 9:57 pm : link
shorter kick, duh.
wikipedia
ray in arlington : 10/13/2019 10:17 pm : link
lists game times for the fair catch kick as 0:00 in several instances, including the last successful one. Since it is an untimed down, 0:00 should mean before the kick.
