Giants thru six games: 2019 v 2018...

M.S. : 10/13/2019 12:21 pm
...has there been an overall improvement?

Having Daniel Jones is clearly a positive development, and a few new defensive players.

And the Giants are 2-4, whereas last season they were 1-5.

What is NOT encouraging is how many points we've scored this season and how many we've let up:

Points For
2019: 111
2018: 117

Points Against
2019: 160
2018: 162

Point Differential:
2019: -49
2018: -45

For certain one can torture stats a dozen ways to Sunday to make a pre-conceived narrative/point. But overall, I'm not sure which direction this team is headed. Maybe the next 10 games will provide some sort of answer.
2018 team really wasn’t as young and ascending as this team

In 2018 you had the draft class and a few other younger players along with the vets that were being phased out. We all looked at last year as rebuilding year but it was really more of a transition year where the org was very much in the throes of turning over the roster. This year’s team is younger across the board.

While last year’s team did improve from September through December I feel like this year’s team is truly moving onward with a bunch of players that will be here long term. Outside of about 8-10 guys, last year’s team wasn’t there yet. Now you have those same 8-10 plus another 10.

The next two months are important but we are seeing growth early on.
Thank the Tampa kicker

we'd be 1-5 this season too. Or if you prefer, Carolina kicked a long, long FG last season to beat us or we would have been 2-4 last year also.

Either way, there has been no vast improvement. It seems as though this team is really no better than the team last year.

2 of those losses came with Eli, so that’s just a continuation of being awful like in 2018. Jones is already better than Eli and while I won’t go so far as to say we would win either of those first 2 games of 2019 with Jones I can say that they would have been 2 more games towards a full revamped team.

I think it’s pretty clear the Giants are a better team this year. Getting even just half our injuries players on offense back will be huge. I don’t know what anyone realistically expects when you have your top 3 playmakers all out with a rookie QB under center.
Giants are 2-2 under Jones
Vanzetti : 10/13/2019 12:43 pm : link
They have games they should win against Refskins, Jets, Dolphins and Cardinals

Then they need to win one of the tougher remaining six games

To me, five more wins should be the goal. That would be encouraging.

Offense would be in better shape if they had the troops playing. They didn't miss anyone last year really except Engram.

Defense I think is better or at least oj the rise.
Well last season we had Barkley
Jay on the Island : 10/13/2019 12:47 pm : link
for all 6 games.

BleedBlue : 10/13/2019 1:18 pm : link
with all the injuries this year....how can you even compare. we didnt have ANYONE last game.

we were healthy beginning of last year. the team is CLEARLY better. we are young and developing.
On offense I see reasons for hope
Matt M. : 10/13/2019 1:34 pm : link
and optimism.

On D, although the pass rush is improving, I don't see an overall improved D. I am starting to really question Bettcher.
Injuries have hamstrung what is a team w almost
LauderdaleMatty : 10/13/2019 1:38 pm : link
No room for error. The defense losing all of itsLBs and Barkley itsway too early to say the team is no better. How much better who knows but it’s way too early to throw dirt on a lot of the first and second year players.

This year the defense
mrvax : 10/13/2019 1:49 pm : link
started off terrible and have slowly gotten better. The D was shot by the 4th Q Thursday night and the Pats scored at will.
The offense missing their best RB, WR and TE presents huge problems (for any team).

Ok.

They'll still find a way to be 6-10.
No one wants to hear it, but I fully believe if the Giants
bLiTz 2k : 10/13/2019 2:51 pm : link
went into New England with Barkley and at least Engram that game possibly turns out differently. We havent had our best player play a full game since week 2...Injuries are part of the game yadda yadda...when you are a fringe team as the Giants are, you cant be without your best talent and expect to compete.

If you can't see the improvement on the roster, then I don't know what to tell you.
hmm

This team still loses to good teams and wins against teams like the Redskins what has changed?

Saqoun's best game was against the cowboys and look how that turned out. You aren't going to do much running with a defense like this. Even in a game everyone is talking how good the d played; they still could not tackle. How many short passes became first downs or big gains for the pats because of bad tackling. Bad tackling in a pro league not college. Holy!

Yup
folks will tell you

this is a young team in a learning/developing year.

OK.

But....

until the improvement is an actuality, this is a bad team.
No notable upgrade in those stats

One more win. But it’s two different seasons and different opponents. Apples and oranges. And we need more than 6 games to assess the team.

If you look at that way, sure. But you’re not looking at things with a clean lens.
Some counterpoints
twostepgiants : 10/13/2019 6:50 pm : link
1- the Giants Offense had Saquon & Odell for all of those 6 games where Saquon has missed 3+ games, Tate was out and now Shephard & Engram missing time

2- Last years Giants were scoring alot of points in the 4th quarter after teams had called off the dogs. Not this year
Maybe i am beyond stats at my age, but I find myself more interested
plato : 10/13/2019 7:00 pm : link
in giant games than last year. So for me that is enough. The next games before the bye will be important from a record view point. Need to win at least two of those. than after bye need to come out strong.

As I said it will be interested to see growth of individuals and of course the team after the bye. Coaches have guys playing hard which counts, wish they were playing smarter.

This is not a playoff year and anyone who thought that was smoking or drinking powerful stuff. However it is a year to watch growth. Hopefully it will come.

Is that your excuse . You won without Tate. You had him for both your losses. RB is not really an important position. This assumes you don’t cut you ld one time starting back and not have a third string back which was said dude....

There really lies the problem with this football team. You have a gm who is like your drunk uncle at thanksgiving dinner giving his football opinions and in like a strange twilight zone freak phenomenon it actually affects personnel decision on a pro football team. This clown has cut or traded all the talent this team had to keep Eli and then reach for a pick which no one thought was anything special only to be in like an greenbay Rogers situation.... like what? It’s like this guy is going around without a brain in his freakin head.
Everyone brings up the Tampa kicker
JOrthman : 10/13/2019 7:21 pm : link
which feeds into how negative or pessimistic Giants fans are. I mean that's part of the game. In previous years we had kickers make career high kicks against us or we'd lose on a fluky play and if you brought that up you were making up excuses, I mean it works both ways.
The difference is record
UberAlias : 10/13/2019 7:55 pm : link
Is a missed FG.
