Markus Golden is Really Having a Big Year

christian : 10/13/2019 3:41 pm
I've been a huge critic of Gettleman's UFA acquisitions and also very critical of collecting ex-Cards -- but wow Golden is having an absolutely big year. He's got an extra game so numbers ranking aren't fair, but the net numbers are really good.

If the Giants are sellers at the deadline I don't think it's inconceivable to fetch a 2nd round pick for him, and he's certainly more valuable than the potential late 3rd he may or may not fetch in comp.

If they are not sellers, I'd like to see the Giants extend him midyear. I think he's worth a 2/25M extension right now.

Sacks: Tied 5th in the league with 5

If someone offers a day two pick for him

I would absolutely take it. Let him know that we will be interested in bringing him back in free agency.

you want to get rid of the main bright spot on defense? ya no...extend him. thats the move. trading him, he will get an extension from the team that takes him.

id extend him and look to add another through draft.

be stunned if anyone traded a second for Golden, especially since he's a FA after this season.

Golden will test the market. He was destined for a big pay day prior to tearing his ACL so he knows this is his last chance at a big contract. He's made it known that he likes it here, if the Giants make it clear to him that they intend on re-signing him in free agency then that could help convince him from re-signing with the team that traded for him.

This team has a lot of holes and Yannick Ngakoue and Shaq Barrett are set to hit the market with both being younger than Golden and neither has suffered a serious knee injury. I like Golden alot but I would rather have one of them plus a day two pick to address OT, WR, ILB, C, FS, and TE.

It doesn't really matter because I doubt a team gives up a 2nd round pick for him.

Re-sign him. Why not?

You need to re-sign him......

Can’t trade him. He was the right Free Agent pick by DG. We’ll have plenty of money next off-season as well. He certainly looks the part right now. Let’s see how the season plays out and his impact on the games, but based on how he’s played to date, I’d re-sign him.

A team who's in contention can trade what will amount to a late 2nd for him and recoup a late 3rd for him the next year. If a team believes they are really close, 8 games of Golden and the playoffs is worth considering.

Vernon did make a key play today, forcing a fumble. He’s a good player when healthy, just not a star. And I don’t recall many fans saying the team was crazy to swap him for Zeitler.

Considering that both teams are 2-4, it might be premature to say who got the better of all the Browns-Giants shuffling. Vernon and Zeitler might both be done by the time either team is any good.

As for Golden, he’s a nice one-year rental. My guess is we’ll have to be content with a nice comp pick when he moves on - especially if Bettcher becomes the fall guy for a losing season.
Good point

if we're 2-6, should be able to get something for Golden.

And Jenkins and Engrams.

Wait. He had no help. It was t his fault. Guess w that stiff Myles Garret on the Browns it’s still not his fault. Guy was another Reese disaster

Ira, what are your thoughts on Golden? What kind of contract do you think would keep him as a Giant?

Who knows? He’s a pending FA and he’s a good but not great player. Maybe a 3rd or 2nd? He’s playing well and he plays an important position....I have no clue.

But we aren’t trading him. Wouldn’t be surprised if the Giants sign him long term before February.

I mean, what do you think is a fair contract for Golden for the Giants to retain him?
He has had more production in 6 games this year

*Giants actually have one good player*
BBI: “Trade him immediately for whatever day 2 pick a team offers us”

Question: if we have a guy who is actually producing, why not sign him? We have plenty of cap room to do so. Why would you rather let a guy go who we KNOW can be a success in this defense just to overpay some other guy in free agency who could just as well be a complete bust? Why do you all want to be so stingy with cap dollars? I don’t think Golden would break the bank and he’s looking like he could be a vet who’s actually worth paying. Everyone always wants to imagine we can get better bang for our buck with hypothetical player x, y, or z. What’s wrong with locking up a guy we already have on the roster if he’s actually producing? A bird in hand, no?

I'm simply saying if the Giants don't believe they can re-sign him for the value they put on him, he's worth more than the comp pick they might not qualify for more than a year from now.

What do you think is a fair contract?

Sorry, I wasn't specifically referring to you (although I realize you were technically the OP so I understand the confusion). I was referring to the several other posters who are so quickly jumping to saying "trade him!" with no caveats or thoughts of possibly signing him. I would absolutely take him for 2 years / $25MM and that sounds pretty fair. Something short-term that compensates him well if we keep him, but gives the Giants the option to cut him after 2020 if his production falls off a cliff in 2020 or he gets injured.

I don't think his production so far this year is at all a fluke considering his production in Arizona pre-injury, if anything I think he play this year has just proven that he's 100% recovered and therefore deserves to be compensated as the talented pass rusher he is. Pass rusher is one commodity I don't mind throwing money at and I have no idea why I see posters immediately ready trade away a proven pass rusher considering we've been dying to find a good one.

All that said, if we get rid of Bettcher we'll have to think twice about it because we don't know for sure if his success has a lot to do with being well-suited to the system. But I personally don't want to get rid of Bettcher (especially after that performance on Thursday night) so I'm considering all this under the assumption we're keeping Bettch around for at least another year. I think he deserves that considering all the youth and inexperience he's working with in what is (if we're being honest) our first real full-on rebuilding year in 2019.

christian : 10/13/2019 11:05 pm : link
The Giants need to start seeing something real from Carter and Hill this year. It will really shape what is and isn't needed with the pass rush.

One of the knocks on Reese was how little he got out picks after the 2nd round. Gettleman has made 4 third round picks; Ximines, Hill, Carter, and Beal. I like Ximines a lot, I suspect he's a foundational guy. The other 3 need to produce more.

I don't think Golden is a top tier pass rusher, but he's proving to be right on that 2nd level. I'd like to see he and Ximines be the answer.
