They had chances. Yeah Happ in that park was a accident waiting to happen.

If I was told that they would be 1-1 coming out of Houston I'd have been pretty doggone happy and I am. Just need Sevy to be Sevy on Tuesday.

After Otto gave up that HR to Springer all I could think of was Otto saying he would strike out Babe Ruth almost every time...one bad pitch.

Ottavino screwed up the plan. Man had one job

I understand why he brought in Otto, but Green was dealing. Green was at 26 pitches, so maybe he was looking down the road to game 4...
Well, Happ suck does suck
bigbluehoya : 10/14/2019 8:14 am : link
But Boone knows that. He went quick hook after quick hook after quick hook. They all worked individually, but it leaves you with trash like Happ in the 10th.

And I don't blame Boone for doing what he did. He was betting on his team scoring some time between the 5th and 10th.

Hitters gotta hit. Gary and Edwin have let them down bigtime so far.

But, reset for a moment - coming home at 1 apiece is something any rational NYY fan would have co-signed on Saturday morning.

Gary had a couple epic battles last night. I really think he is zoning in. Eddie looked more lost than I have ever seen him. I wonder if he wasn't seeing the ball in those lights..
I agree he looked a bit less hopeless
bigbluehoya : 10/14/2019 8:31 am : link
last night.

He is still expanding the zone with ridiculous frequency. He looks very pull happy early in counts, like he's guessing at pitches and deciding beforehand whether he's going to swing.

with 2 strikes, he did a better job of cutting down on the swing and actually reading and fighting off pitches.

It's frustrating, because he has the hit tool to use the whole field while also doing big damage to mistakes.

The lack of consistent, quality approach from him at this point is maddening.

order are guys who are boom or bust. Sanchez and Edwin are rarely going to have a battle at bat like Gardner. They are going to take some hacks and if they connect it changes the game.

When they face guys like Verlander and cole, they need to guess right. When they miss, they will look ugly. Edwin has had some poor AB's. He's missed pitches that were in the zone that he could drive and he's waved at some bad ones. Gary looks like he's tracking the ball better.

It won't be good for making it a short night for Cole from a pitch count standpoint, but we need to look for a certain pitch and swing at the first pitch when he's trying to get ahead of batters.
I hate that Game 3
bigbluehoya : 10/14/2019 8:39 am : link
is at 3pm. Not just from a personal work/life perspective, but the shadows in YS are likely going to be a bitch for hitters.

Should work both ways, but makes me feel even more helpless facing Cole.

But October is October. Let's get weird.

With the quality of the hitters on both sides, I think the majority of both lineups were boom or bust last night. 2-2 through 10 innings with numerous chances on both sides.

Though that was a very winnable game last night.
Don't blame Happ, that would be shortsighted, the Yanks did absolutely nothing at the plate after Judge's homer.
Time for some of these guys to start hitting, like Edwin and El Gary for instance.
The next game is a 4:07 start time, as Smoltz said, hope for some clouds in October.
Would have preferred a night game.

Tough loss last night. Felt like that game was ours to steal.

I was a little upset that Boone went to Ottavino when Green was throwing so well knowing Otto hasn't quite been as dominant lately. In retrospect, it was a sound decision looking at the numbers - SSS, but Springer didn't have a hit against Ottavino in the ~4 times he faced him and he had a couple off Green.

It just didn't work out. If he leaves Green in and Springer tattoos him, he gets the same questions and people ask why Ottavino wasn't in the game.

Sucks the Astros forced us to hold Chapman to 1 inning... Happ was never going to hold serve for long against that lineup.

It's tricky with the way we're navigating the postseason - we're basically set up where we only have 1 starter giving us normal starter length (Tanaka). Boone had to give Pax the early hook to keep the game close - which I was fine with - but Severino probably isn't going to give us any more than 4 tomorrow so again, we're going to have to really ride these leverage guys. Rain on Wednesday might be our friend...

It's a tough task. Meanwhile, they got 7 from Verlander and will probably get the same at least from Cole tomorrow... so the onus on their pen isn't quite the same.

This was always going to be a really hard series, though. The Yanks did their job getting a W @ Minute Maid. The odds of coming home with 2 wins in our pockets were really slim.

To win this thing, it's going to require 6-7 games and most of us knew and expected that going in. Frustrated to have last night get away - you could feel the tide start to turn once we burned through Britton and Chappy. We had a small window against Harris/Pressley but couldn't get that elusive big hit.

It is what it is. Take a deep breath, let's get home tomorrow and get back on track behind Sevy.

Also... tomorrow is my 35th bday; I should probably just cut out of work and go to the game, right?

He'd be on full rest for Game 5 on Friday, if there's a Wednesday rainout. A lot depends on how Game 3 goes - if they're up 2-1, they may just roll their fourth starter out there in Game 4 and have Greinke, Verlander and Cole lined up for Games 5-7. An extra day of rest for Verlander might help at this point.

needs to be in the lineup for game 3. If it has to be at DH, so be it. Encarnacion is swinging at everything he sees and hasn't done anything since the first inning of Twins game 2.

We obviously don't have the insight into the extent of the injury. But if it's not bad enough to be taken off the roster, then he needs to be in the lineup. If it happened early in game 1 then it clearly wasn't bad enough to prevent him from hitting a bomb to CF later in the game. This is the spot we've been waiting all season to have Stanton. Hell if he's in there last night we might win that game. I'm a big fan of Stanton, but this is becoming pretty frustrating.
Yeah I'm no Stanton hater
bceagle05 : 10/14/2019 1:25 pm : link
but that was a bad look last night. Everybody on both teams was playing their hearts out - including some with bumps and bruises of their own - and Stanton was chilling in the dugout. Fair or unfair, that type of things sticks to a player. Reminds me of that epic Yankees/Sox game in 2004 when Jeter went into the stands - Nomar got crucified for sitting that game out while Jeter and ARod were laying it on the line, and he was traded a few weeks later.

I suspect Stanton strained the quad hustling
shyster : 10/14/2019 2:41 pm : link
out his infield hit in his first at bat in game one.

Baseball is a game of periodic all out effort with the legs. If you can't run 100% without risking blowing out a mild strain, you have to tell the team and, once you do, it's not your decision whether you play.

Even if Stanton "just" DHs, it's not as though the only options are that he hits a HR or can otherwise jog back to the dugout.

What if he comes up with bases loaded one out and hits a ground ball?

If he's replaced on the roster now, he's out for the WS too; that's why he's in the dugout.
.
Kyle in NY : 10/14/2019 2:54 pm : link
He's missed about 150 games this season with various strains and sprains. I don't tend to blame players for injuries, I imagine Stanton is as frustrated as anybody, but if you can't run to first base without pulling something then what are we doing here?

So while I understand being a DH doesn't completely mitigate the effects of the injury, if he's anywhere close to being able to play, he needs to be in there. Nobody on the team is 100% at this point the year and they've gotten far less rest than Stanton has this season.

If it's bad enough that he can't play these next 3 games, then get him off the roster, even if that means sacrificing the World Series with him. They can't have a short bench the rest of this series. They had a spot last night with Encarnacion as the winning run on 2nd base and nobody available to pinch run. Can't be short handed when the margin for error is so small in this series.

Thank you!

I agree with you guys on Stanton. To see him yucking it up in the dugout kind of pissed me off. The guy has barely played at ALL this season and has made a ton of money to do a lot of nothing.

I'm not one of the people who didn't want him to come back because I thought he'd wreck the team chemistry or kill rallies, etc... but I was hoping to see a little more of a competitor. He doesn't seem like the type of guy who you have to do a whole lot to keep off the field if he's not 100%.

A lot of guys are playing banged up. You play the entire 162 game year for these moments. He should have been dying to get out on the field and maybe he was... it just didn't really look that way to me. It didn't look like he was all that bothered about not being out there.

And I know that's not totally fair... and it's almost like all the old Eli 'body language' stuff - but it's not always going to be fair when we're in NY and Stanton is making what he's making and has played as little as he's played this year.

If he can play, he's got to play. We cannot be that shorthanded again in Game 3. If he cant play tomorrow, take him off the roster. We don't have time to 'wait and see' anymore.

and whether it's something that should be gutted out, but I agree that if he can't go, they need to replace him, WS be dammed. Whether it's for a bat or Wade's legs, it's really costly to have a guy who can't go. And if they're saving him for the WS, they have to consider that if he's even a little limited in the WS he becomes a lot less valuable since DH is only even an option for 4 games.

We better hope Severino gives us a bit more length than Paxton.

I can't stand Smoltz, but the one point he's right on is that we don't have much margin for error the way we're going to play this postseason with our bullpen. The longer the series goes on, the more difficult it's going to be to navigate 9 innings if we have to keep going to the pen after 4.

Houston got 6 out of Greinke and 6.2 out of Verlander. Hard to see them getting less than that from Cole. So, they're putting a lot less stress on their pen than we are.

Tanaka actually did give us length, but, between Paxton's short outing, that Severino probably can't be counted on for much more than 4-5 innings at most, and the fact that we're going to use Game 4 as a bullpen game... we're asking a lot of these guys.

Side note... but does anyone believe the rumor that MLB went back to the 'de-juiced' balls for the Postseason? Something definitely seems a bit fishy with whatever has been going on with the baseballs this year.

Kyle in NY : 10/14/2019 3:44 pm : link
There have been several balls hit where off the bat I thought were gone, just based on watching games all season and knowing what a HR tends to look like off the bat, and they've just died on the warning track. Definitely think it's possible they've messed with the balls again.

As far as the pitching, we miss Betances so damn much. The bullpen really gutted it out last night and gave the team a chance but we're a top guy short to be able to consistently pull off these bullpen games, especially with Otto struggling. Betances would have been in that spot against Springer instead.

Severino should be pretty close to a full go tomorrow. This is his fifth start, hopefully he's good for 100 pitches. We absolutely cannot be in the bullpen again by the 3rd or 4th inning.
Yeah, we're definitely walking the tight rope with this pitching staff
bceagle05 : 10/14/2019 3:45 pm : link
That's why last night was such a missed opportunity - offense has to hit Smith, Harris and Pressly late in a tie game. It'll be a shame if that winds up being the difference, but there's still plenty of baseball left to play. Beating Cole tomorrow would be a major statement - Astros may lot get out of New York if we can do it.

IF we can do it...

And you know I didn’t like the Stanton trade, people wanted to argue with me that the actual 25M we are paying him is chump change. Well, I think we are paying him more than 1M a game this year, somehow he managed to miss 150 games without anything torn or fractured. What’s going on here? It’s one thing to not handle pressurized baseball, it’s another to not bother showing up.

Bill2 : 10/14/2019 5:51 pm : link
Happy Birthday arc. Wishing you a great year.

Stanton or anyone else. Baseball at the top level is close to a 365 job requiring great attention and intensity and discipline. The idea that the guy or any guy on the Yankees is being a flake or not caring or shrugging it off or just collecting his money is well...imo...unfounded and not good thinking.

Were their suspects like that? Sure. Pavano. Irabu. Likely Ellsbury

Were their various guys who's undisciplined lack of taking care of themselves left a lot of bad ABS and errors and suboptimal performance on the field? And would not fit on the current Yankees? sure

Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, Ford, Skowron, Boyer and a guy called Babe Ruth come to mind.

But I have no evidence that sub effort applies to Stanton.

More interestingly, I think the Yankees intend ( even this offseason) to go after hitters who shrink and stay in the zone, then hit hard and if possible with a slight lift.

I think they are slowly also valuing defense more and more ( when you look at some of the decisions they have made)

On the pitching side, more and more they try to go no more than 2 times through the lineup ( unless its the other teams b0ttom end of the lineup coming up) and then change eyelevel, spin rates, pitch recognition, delivery mechanics the opposing hitters see by multiple pitchers.

Yeah yeah its easy to say ( like that idiot Buck repeats and repeats) that some thing can go wrong. But that is offset by the mountain of hitting obstacles new pitching variations present. ( Green high in the zone/Britton low in the zone/Kahnle side to side/Chapman up and down eye levels).

I think the Yankees will continue to compete via savages in the box and a differentiated bullpen and several players who can play two or more positions. May not have the one more horse this year in the bullpen to pull it off, but I think that's how they are trying to compete/build versus the other top six super organizations.

all just imo
still can't believe that Smith joker completely shut them down

Thanks, Bill!

I typically don't like to theorize on how injured players are or aren't - I guess I've just become a bit frustrated with the way Stanton's year has gone. Feels like he's played less than 5 games and wound up injured on 3 separate occasions now this year. It's hard to figure out why he's been so injury prone or if it's just a bad coincidence - but a game like last night, we really needed him and he was unavailable, which left us shorthanded and really sucked.

Apparently they think he'll be able to give it a go tomorrow. I hope he can. Would love to see him hit one out in a big spot and see the stadium erupt.
