Him almost the whole season. Sure they would like him in there but to me he’s almost a luxury st this point since they certainly didn’t need him to win 103 games
Verlander is. I can't think of many pitcher's in their mid 30's that have been able to regain their mid 20's form, After losing it for a couple of years. Roger Clemens is the only one that comes to mind.
Nice recovery. But I wouldn’t let green get too cold down there. Paxton doesn’t have great feel for his pitches. He seems to be missing most targets by a foot.
That’s how they want to go after Verlander. You get a fastball early in the count, it’s probably the most hittable pitch of the AB. They’re just missing so far.
It’s pick your poison...take more pitches, and they’re left chasing 2 strike breaking balls. Simple fact is he’s a great pitcher...someone needs to get a hold of one and break through for us
what do you call a guy who dominates the end of the season and then pitches poorly in postseason? the spot is just too big for him....i dont get why this is so horrible to say lol

What do you call a person who whines like an ignorant fucking child, gives up on their team after they’re down 1fucking run in a game that is far from over and a series when the team they’re rooting for is up 1-0 in the series?
It’s you. You’re a fucking pathetic Yankee ‘fan’. Fuck off.

LMFAO. youre really mad my dude. maybe a stiff drink, relax some
But this is two games Encarnation looks horrible in a row
yea, he is a good hitter though and he will snap out of it
Most likely. But if Stanton can come back game 3 he might be on the bench. Guy was great all year. Just last night and tonight he looks like he’s pressing a bit
Nothing wrong with that if they spot something and use it to their advantage. As long as it's not from and cameras or eyes in the sky type of thing.
If a coach or player picks up on something that's part of the game and not illegal.
My point is that is been reported that they are doing camera stuff to stream signs. I’m old enough to remember Gaylord Perry throwing spitters. If they get away with it legal or illegal it’s what it is but if they are stealing signs they are likely going to say he was tipping his pitches to cover their asses
They weren’t stealing signs. They noticed something about how he was holding his glove. This is from the Tampa Bay game a few days ago but to give you a visual.

Agreed. It was well documented in last years playoffs the Red Sox figured out something Severino did to tip his pitchers with men on base. They found it by studying video...can’t argue with that.
Using video to steal and relay signs real time is a different story.

They need to self scout and figure out what went wrong though.

Ahh ok. I didn't see or hear anything about them using cameras. If that's true you may be right about using the tipping pitches as a cover.
I'm old enough to remember Gaylord too, and it seemed like what he did was more or less accepted. Either that or he was a master at not getting caught that often.

Some of it is also mental Gamesmanship. Who knows. Getting into you Opponents head is huge in a series like this. Meanwhile Didi making Verlander work.
made him make a lot of pitches and throws over to 1st. Over 80 pitches now. That may keep him from getting out of the 7th. Interesting to see if he tries to get another inning out of Green here to try and hand it to Kahnle/Otto/Brit/Chappy
making Verlander sweat it out some more this inning
Agreed and it's AB's like those that make this lineup so tough to get through. There's no letup and guys 1-9 can hurt you.
It's not easy even for a great pitcher like Verlander, and it's got to be a bit mentally draining as well as physical. Like he can't exhale til he gets back in the dugout.
Damn, Green really got him to climb the ladder there Â
Green gives up the HR and you're saying 'why the hell did they stick with Green for so long'. That's their MO, and it has worked well for them overall.
Here comes another reliever who's been shaky. As Bill2 astutely pointed out, the Betances injury probably looms larger than the rest - he was the unlucky one of the group. Hope Kahnle has an out in him.
was made long before the inning even started, hell it was probably made before the series even started.
You can't manage that way in the playoffs and especially a 7 game series.
I'd argue that the playoffs is especially when you don't want to deviate from the playbook.
Look at the Tanaka situation yesterday - could easily have left him in more, he was cruising. But all the analytics forecasted a breakdown on the horizon. Do you go with 'gut' - or do you trust the process and expect that the third time through the lineup is going to bring pain to a guy who's otherwise on fire?
Both were the right decisions, IMO - just that Ottovino hasn't been steady lately.

I'd bet their scouting reports showed Springer having more trouble with the slider than fastball and that's why he went with Otto.
Can't blame Boone there for Otto hanging one. Springer was swinging all the way and that pitch should've been nowhere near the strike zone. Let alone a hanger right down the middle.

Yup they just said it on the broadcast - Springer was 0-4 with 3 Ks against Ottavino.
That was less about a bad decision by Boone, and more Ottavino just made a bad pitch, and a good hitter didn’t miss it.
hung one, it sucks but that’s what happened. You can’t be pissed when the strategy that got us here doesn’t work on the rare occasion. It was also a solo shot and the game is tied, it was hardly a death blow to the game.

This really makes no sense.
Boone decided to pull Paxton before the series started? And mapped up that Green would go and take him out while hot??
He's not going to keep any of the core relievers in for 3 innings. If he brought CC or Happ in - then you'd be perplexed at the pitching change, but Green could easily have given up the same HR and then the complaint would be Boone stuck with a reliever more than 2 innings.
Armchair managing sounds easy, but it's really just whining at the outcome
4 inning game now, 0-0. Let's get to Verlander this one. Had some good ABs last inning and Urshela almost put one in the seats. Just do a little better this time.
to try and get 3 outs in a game where your starter didn't get out of the 3rd inning.
Head scratching.
Why is it head scratching? They did what needed to be done to get out of the inning tied and move forward.
Look at the success Tampa had vs them throwing all their guys. The Yanks went with 13 pitchers for a reason, and with the day off tomorrow, don't be surprised to see everyone but Sevy and Masa tonight.

Not Paxton. The move to take Green out at a certain pitch number or with a certain batter coming up.
Paxton getting yanked was the right decision, imo.
to decide whether or not to send him, once it gets away from Altuve you have to, it just took a lucky bounce for the Astros. That ball hops anywhere else and it's 3-2 yankees, 1st and 3rd.

Re: pulling Green - a dude on Twitter looked up the numbers on who had the highest slugging 0ercentage in all of MLB against four seam fastballs (ie, the only pitch Green really throws), and it was none other than George Springer.

yea and usually the SS isn't as close to the 2b
If it was a 2-2 pitch I doubt he would've but at 3-2 DJ was running on the pitch and rounding third as the ball bounced away from Altuve. If it rolls away from him a little more instead of right to Correa, he scores.
Put the pressure on them to make the play and they did,

You have to send the runner there. It takes a lot of things to happen for that play to end up an out. The ball has to stay close to a fielder, he has to pick it up, and make an accurate throw.
So many times, that results in one of those parts failing.
bounces literally anywhere besides the exact place it did it's 3-2 yanks.
If it bounces to the right towards the outfield, Correa has to field it going towards the outfield, then spin and make a longer throw. Never going to happen.

Exactly. It just took a bad bounce for the Yanks.
It was a nice play by the Stros and that's why they're here. Both teams are showing why they won as much as they did this year and why they're the last two standing in the AL.
fucking terrible. you know verlander on the edge of coming out....you go out take first pitch then make a horrible pass at a ball. then look at a great pitch to hit. then swing at pitch in dirt....4 pitches lol. horrible
only 2 runs but we consistently laid off that curveball and had good contact. Some more luck and we would have done better. Making them go to their pen in the 7th was the game plan coming in.

With Verlander and Cole the gameplan should be, play them even and beat the Houston pen.
SHITTY plate discipline...its embarrassing. didi, EE and sanchez really need to change approach
Fuck off already, whoever you are. You do almost nothing but bitching and moaning.
huh? bro....are you a fucking pussy or what? can we not say anything negative?
You dont think those three have been struggling and having bad ABs? holy shit. what a fucking girl dude. its like we have to suck them off no matter how they play.
In some ways the series hangs in the balance right now. We pull this out, good chance we don’t come back to Houston to face Verlander and Cole in games 6 and 7
Did anyone else notice him sitting behind home plate up until last inning? Did they mention it on the broadcast? The funny thing was he didn't seem to paying much attention to the game looked to be on his phone most the the time. The girl he was with was wearing an Astros hat and seemed more interested in the game than him lol. Weird of them to leave in the 9th inning of a 2-2 game but maybe he'd had enough baseball haha
At the plate. He usually takes advantage of many of those pitches he’s been getting over the meat of the plate. Hope he can get it out of his head when they return home. They need him.
Chapman’s outings this season when coming in with the game tied Â
Britton was kind of shaky, but it's bottom of the lineup and he only threw 12.
Should have left Britton in. When we lose this guy with JA Happ giving up a bomb in the 10th or 11th inning you can blame Boone for going to Chapman when Britton still had plenty in the tank.
Smoltz rooting so hard for the Stros to walk off here.... Â
I'd leave him out there but I doubt Boone will. This is why it was so foolish to pull Britton when he had only thrown like 11 pitches. Looks like we'll get Happ for the 10th against the heart of the Astros order.
Let's hope Boone has the stones to go to Loiasiga, who looked absolutely nasty last night.
how the hell do they let him call these games with his obvious anti-Yankees bias.
Really?
I'm not getting that at all.
He was literally hoping for Chapman leaves one over the plate. Listen to how excited he gets when something good happens for the Astros and how quiet he gets when it's the reverse.
if paxton would have just lasted like 5 or so we would have been in such better shape because our pen>theirs and our lineup>theirs. we got exactly what we wanted vs verlander. we got a couple of runs and go him out in decent time. shame we dont have more arms avail now. need to hope JL holds it down
Bottom half of the order is a black hole right now
We're definitely missing Stanton in there tonight. Not only does he add to a pitcher's street level but he stretches our lineup out a bit too and pushes everyone down a spot.

I'm not hearing the anti-Yankee bias. If you remember, when Lemahieu was thrown out at home he said "Unfortunately the Astros made a perfect play." To me if anything that sounded pro-Yankees to me, literally saying "Unfortunately..." I think what's confusing is the way he talks it can just sound like he's "rooting" for something to happen when really he's just speaking from the perspective of one team or the other. I think fans are just sensitive to every little word from the announcers when they're stressed out by a game.
boone is terrible at managing the pen. he reads his fucking book.
once shit stain paxton came out he needed to extend everyone some. should have left in green, left in britton. now we have young inexperienced guys or bums coming in to try and keep us alive....

Agree that we should have extended Britton and/or Chapman
This game isn't his finest hour, but something tells me you're a parachute in when the playoffs start only type of fan. Because even if you disagree with the way it's been managed today, if you watched consistently at any point over the past 2 years you would never say he's terrible at managing a bullpen

Maybe Britton. If we had extended Chapman, I don't think we'd be in any better of a situation right now.
Agreed. He managed in the moment all game to get out of each inning. You don't manage to save guys in case you get to extras. You hope your bats come through along the way.
Is the offense has to do something. Going to the pen so early is tough but the made 1 bad pitch in 6 plus innings. We're in the 10th. So far our offense is not coming through.
Agreed. He managed in the moment all game to get out of each inning. You don't manage to save guys in case you get to extras. You hope your bats come through along the way.
This is plainly wrong. If that's how you feel why not bring in Chapman in the 2nd inning with 2 runners on? You have to be prepared for a time game in the 9th t go to extra inning.s

You need to get the big outs along the way or you never get to Chapman or extra innings.
You don't bring in Chapman in the 2nd inning because that's not his job. It's Green's and the other big arms in the pen.
that was a better AB from sanchez but good god, how does he swing at that "tipped" pitch?!? shit was a ball wen it left his hand...my god. some plate discipline and this guy would be an INSANELY tough out

Fuck off little bitch ass wannabe Yankee ‘fan’.
i am a wannabe yankee fan because im mad we lost? yea makes sense dude. you just think youre some spokesman for yankee fans everywhere. go sit on a dick
make up an injury for Happ. He can't pitch against this Astros team. There's one batter he can face, Alvarez, and even he is dicey against Alvarez. I would take him off the roster and not think twice

good call
RE: You get the feeling the Yankees blew their best chance in this series Â
nah we can beat grienke in game 4, but if we won tonight....SERIOUS shift of momentum in this series. so much so that i could see us beating cole at home. now, we could be down 2-1 but i expect to beat grienke in game 4
Yankees approach at the plate really needs to change in games 3-7. They had the right one vs Verlander, but looked like crap once he went out.
i said the same thing and was cursed at.
their approach is pathetic. EE sanchez and didi just come up fucking hacking away.
You gave up on this game less than an hour into it and said the Astros were going to the World Series.
Shut the fuck up already.
we will see if i am wrong. that being said....i am not allowed to feel like we are the lesser team vs an opponent? question. do you always think the giants are going to win? i do think houston is too much for us, but i will root my ass off. me having a different opinion doesnt give you the right to tell me to fuck off....as if i would be like okay the great hsilwek said to leave so i will lol. take a hike dude...

LMFAO. ya okay dude. whatever you say...not feeling confident doesnt make me a fake fan. im just realistic...this was always going to be a tough series because they have pitching and we simply dont. paxton is dogshit. we need to hope we get 5 out of sevy in two days
paxton sucks
BleedBlue : 10/13/2019 8:46 pm : link : reply
we had happ and paxton, houston adds cole and grienke....
thats why they will be playing in WS
Not ever an hour into the game
Pathetic. Fucking. Loser. ‘Fan’.
LMFAO. so because i stated THREE facts. 1.paxton sucks 2. they added cole and grienke 3. we added happ and paxton
and then have the opinion(and still do) that the stros are going to the WS....that makes me a fake fan?
does it tho? or does it make me someone who understands the game of baseball and what it takes to win....our SP going 3 innings IS NOT sustainable and is not a winning formula come playoff time...it just isnt. cole will go fucking 8 innings on tuesday...THATS how you win. again...take a fucking hike. i dont care i you think i am a "fake" fan. i am just a fan who understands we wont win if we cant pitch
Annoying loss, but Yanks are winning this fucking series.
Cole is great. But they'll smack him around. This series doesnt go back to Houston. Yanks in 5.
The potential rain out on Wednesday will likely mean 4 straight days of games if it goes 7. Not ideal for the Yanks to not have an off day in those 4 days with how much Yanks will likely need from the bullpen

lmao. yea because watching EVERY game means you know baseball....
its common fucking sense. 2.1 innings from your starter isnt a winning formula. sorry that i know that in my "7.5" games and you dont in 162. again...if we dont pitch well, we wont win
Verlander had his C-level stuff (at best), yet he got through almost 7 innings allowing just 2 runs in large part because of questionable ABs. EE, Didi, Gardy, and Sanchez looked awful at the dish against him. Guys were looking at hanging breaking stuff or fastballs down the middle (or fouling them back), then swinging at trash.
The main 5 guys in the bullpen did a great job with the exception of Ottavino. Jeez, he's completely fallen off.
I drop Sanchez down another spot in the order and would look to do the same with EE. If the pitching wasn't performing so well, I wouldn't be surprised if they gave Romine a chance. But they'll keep running Gary out there in hopes he'll run into one in a big spot.
This is turning into a very interesting series. The winner should Â
win the World Series, which makes it even more interesting. If Houston wins game 3 and the Yankees win game 4, we've got an exciting 3 game series to determine the AL champion and probably the world champion.
But Boone knows that. He went quick hook after quick hook after quick hook. They all worked individually, but it leaves you with trash like Happ in the 10th.
And I don't blame Boone for doing what he did. He was betting on his team scoring some time between the 5th and 10th.
Hitters gotta hit. Gary and Edwin have let them down bigtime so far.
But, reset for a moment - coming home at 1 apiece is something any rational NYY fan would have co-signed on Saturday morning.

Gary had a couple epic battles last night. I really think he is zoning in. Eddie looked more lost than I have ever seen him. I wonder if he wasn't seeing the ball in those lights..
He is still expanding the zone with ridiculous frequency. He looks very pull happy early in counts, like he's guessing at pitches and deciding beforehand whether he's going to swing.
with 2 strikes, he did a better job of cutting down on the swing and actually reading and fighting off pitches.
It's frustrating, because he has the hit tool to use the whole field while also doing big damage to mistakes.
The lack of consistent, quality approach from him at this point is maddening.
order are guys who are boom or bust. Sanchez and Edwin are rarely going to have a battle at bat like Gardner. They are going to take some hacks and if they connect it changes the game.
When they face guys like Verlander and cole, they need to guess right. When they miss, they will look ugly. Edwin has had some poor AB's. He's missed pitches that were in the zone that he could drive and he's waved at some bad ones. Gary looks like he's tracking the ball better.
It won't be good for making it a short night for Cole from a pitch count standpoint, but we need to look for a certain pitch and swing at the first pitch when he's trying to get ahead of batters.

With the quality of the hitters on both sides, I think the majority of both lineups were boom or bust last night. 2-2 through 10 innings with numerous chances on both sides.
Though that was a very winnable game last night.
Don't blame Happ, that would be shortsighted, the Yanks did absolutely nothing at the plate after Judge's homer.
Time for some of these guys to start hitting, like Edwin and El Gary for instance.
The next game is a 4:07 start time, as Smoltz said, hope for some clouds in October.
Would have preferred a night game.
Stanton is hurting again, what a shocker, he is a wuss!
Tough loss last night. Felt like that game was ours to steal.
I was a little upset that Boone went to Ottavino when Green was throwing so well knowing Otto hasn't quite been as dominant lately. In retrospect, it was a sound decision looking at the numbers - SSS, but Springer didn't have a hit against Ottavino in the ~4 times he faced him and he had a couple off Green.
It just didn't work out. If he leaves Green in and Springer tattoos him, he gets the same questions and people ask why Ottavino wasn't in the game.
Sucks the Astros forced us to hold Chapman to 1 inning... Happ was never going to hold serve for long against that lineup.
It's tricky with the way we're navigating the postseason - we're basically set up where we only have 1 starter giving us normal starter length (Tanaka). Boone had to give Pax the early hook to keep the game close - which I was fine with - but Severino probably isn't going to give us any more than 4 tomorrow so again, we're going to have to really ride these leverage guys. Rain on Wednesday might be our friend...
It's a tough task. Meanwhile, they got 7 from Verlander and will probably get the same at least from Cole tomorrow... so the onus on their pen isn't quite the same.
This was always going to be a really hard series, though. The Yanks did their job getting a W @ Minute Maid. The odds of coming home with 2 wins in our pockets were really slim.
To win this thing, it's going to require 6-7 games and most of us knew and expected that going in. Frustrated to have last night get away - you could feel the tide start to turn once we burned through Britton and Chappy. We had a small window against Harris/Pressley but couldn't get that elusive big hit.
It is what it is. Take a deep breath, let's get home tomorrow and get back on track behind Sevy.
Also... tomorrow is my 35th bday; I should probably just cut out of work and go to the game, right?
Does Verlander pitch game 4 if Wed is rained out? Â
And yes... I agree.. I definitely think I'm coming down with something. My doc would probably just tell me to take a day off and watch some playoff baseball, so..
He'd be on full rest for Game 5 on Friday, if there's a Wednesday rainout. A lot depends on how Game 3 goes - if they're up 2-1, they may just roll their fourth starter out there in Game 4 and have Greinke, Verlander and Cole lined up for Games 5-7. An extra day of rest for Verlander might help at this point.
“Thinking it can’t go on the air with the swear words, I said, ‘F–k, he has missed 150 freakin’ games, so what the f–k,'” Jackson said. “I almost choked when they said they were live. I immediately spoke to Jason Zillo [Yankees PR head] and he advised I go in and talk to Stanton, which I did. He graciously accepted my faux pas.’’
Doesn't sound like a big issue, but I think he was expressing how we all felt. MrOctober - ( New Window )
Paxton has to clear this from the memory bank immediately Â
He’s going to be relied on back in Houston either win the series or extend it. This team desperately needs Paxton to at least find a way to go 4+ solid innings. Time for him to nut up
needs to be in the lineup for game 3. If it has to be at DH, so be it. Encarnacion is swinging at everything he sees and hasn't done anything since the first inning of Twins game 2.
We obviously don't have the insight into the extent of the injury. But if it's not bad enough to be taken off the roster, then he needs to be in the lineup. If it happened early in game 1 then it clearly wasn't bad enough to prevent him from hitting a bomb to CF later in the game. This is the spot we've been waiting all season to have Stanton. Hell if he's in there last night we might win that game. I'm a big fan of Stanton, but this is becoming pretty frustrating.
but that was a bad look last night. Everybody on both teams was playing their hearts out - including some with bumps and bruises of their own - and Stanton was chilling in the dugout. Fair or unfair, that type of things sticks to a player. Reminds me of that epic Yankees/Sox game in 2004 when Jeter went into the stands - Nomar got crucified for sitting that game out while Jeter and ARod were laying it on the line, and he was traded a few weeks later.
Tough loss last night. Felt like that game was ours to steal.
...
Also... tomorrow is my 35th bday; I should probably just cut out of work and go to the game, right?
Have to join in on the Happy Birthday. As for cutting out of work, you'd be a fool not to, as they say. Especially if your health is unsteady. Boone may need to call on you!
out his infield hit in his first at bat in game one.
Baseball is a game of periodic all out effort with the legs. If you can't run 100% without risking blowing out a mild strain, you have to tell the team and, once you do, it's not your decision whether you play.
Even if Stanton "just" DHs, it's not as though the only options are that he hits a HR or can otherwise jog back to the dugout.
What if he comes up with bases loaded one out and hits a ground ball?
If he's replaced on the roster now, he's out for the WS too; that's why he's in the dugout.
He's missed about 150 games this season with various strains and sprains. I don't tend to blame players for injuries, I imagine Stanton is as frustrated as anybody, but if you can't run to first base without pulling something then what are we doing here?
So while I understand being a DH doesn't completely mitigate the effects of the injury, if he's anywhere close to being able to play, he needs to be in there. Nobody on the team is 100% at this point the year and they've gotten far less rest than Stanton has this season.
If it's bad enough that he can't play these next 3 games, then get him off the roster, even if that means sacrificing the World Series with him. They can't have a short bench the rest of this series. They had a spot last night with Encarnacion as the winning run on 2nd base and nobody available to pinch run. Can't be short handed when the margin for error is so small in this series.
Tough loss last night. Felt like that game was ours to steal.

Thank you!
I agree with you guys on Stanton. To see him yucking it up in the dugout kind of pissed me off. The guy has barely played at ALL this season and has made a ton of money to do a lot of nothing.
I'm not one of the people who didn't want him to come back because I thought he'd wreck the team chemistry or kill rallies, etc... but I was hoping to see a little more of a competitor. He doesn't seem like the type of guy who you have to do a whole lot to keep off the field if he's not 100%.
A lot of guys are playing banged up. You play the entire 162 game year for these moments. He should have been dying to get out on the field and maybe he was... it just didn't really look that way to me. It didn't look like he was all that bothered about not being out there.
And I know that's not totally fair... and it's almost like all the old Eli 'body language' stuff - but it's not always going to be fair when we're in NY and Stanton is making what he's making and has played as little as he's played this year.
If he can play, he's got to play. We cannot be that shorthanded again in Game 3. If he cant play tomorrow, take him off the roster. We don't have time to 'wait and see' anymore.
transistor radio my friend, about the size of a prayer book and no ear plugs.
I heard Bill Mazeroski's walk-off home run on a transistor radio on the school bus. Everyone was rooting for the Yankees (there was no NL team in NY in 1960) and we were all severely bummed out.
and whether it's something that should be gutted out, but I agree that if he can't go, they need to replace him, WS be dammed. Whether it's for a bat or Wade's legs, it's really costly to have a guy who can't go. And if they're saving him for the WS, they have to consider that if he's even a little limited in the WS he becomes a lot less valuable since DH is only even an option for 4 games.

@eboland11
Boone said Wednesday likely will be a “bullpen day.”
We better hope Severino gives us a bit more length than Paxton.
I can't stand Smoltz, but the one point he's right on is that we don't have much margin for error the way we're going to play this postseason with our bullpen. The longer the series goes on, the more difficult it's going to be to navigate 9 innings if we have to keep going to the pen after 4.
Houston got 6 out of Greinke and 6.2 out of Verlander. Hard to see them getting less than that from Cole. So, they're putting a lot less stress on their pen than we are.
Tanaka actually did give us length, but, between Paxton's short outing, that Severino probably can't be counted on for much more than 4-5 innings at most, and the fact that we're going to use Game 4 as a bullpen game... we're asking a lot of these guys.
Side note... but does anyone believe the rumor that MLB went back to the 'de-juiced' balls for the Postseason? Something definitely seems a bit fishy with whatever has been going on with the baseballs this year.
There have been several balls hit where off the bat I thought were gone, just based on watching games all season and knowing what a HR tends to look like off the bat, and they've just died on the warning track. Definitely think it's possible they've messed with the balls again.
As far as the pitching, we miss Betances so damn much. The bullpen really gutted it out last night and gave the team a chance but we're a top guy short to be able to consistently pull off these bullpen games, especially with Otto struggling. Betances would have been in that spot against Springer instead.
Severino should be pretty close to a full go tomorrow. This is his fifth start, hopefully he's good for 100 pitches. We absolutely cannot be in the bullpen again by the 3rd or 4th inning.
Yeah, we're definitely walking the tight rope with this pitching staff Â
That's why last night was such a missed opportunity - offense has to hit Smith, Harris and Pressly late in a tie game. It'll be a shame if that winds up being the difference, but there's still plenty of baseball left to play. Beating Cole tomorrow would be a major statement - Astros may lot get out of New York if we can do it.

Definitely felt the absence of Betances big time last night. In those late innings, that's all I kept thinking to myself.
Somebody should bring a sign to the game that says “Gerrite we will be Â
And you know I didn’t like the Stanton trade, people wanted to argue with me that the actual 25M we are paying him is chump change. Well, I think we are paying him more than 1M a game this year, somehow he managed to miss 150 games without anything torn or fractured. What’s going on here? It’s one thing to not handle pressurized baseball, it’s another to not bother showing up.
Stanton or anyone else. Baseball at the top level is close to a 365 job requiring great attention and intensity and discipline. The idea that the guy or any guy on the Yankees is being a flake or not caring or shrugging it off or just collecting his money is well...imo...unfounded and not good thinking.
Were their suspects like that? Sure. Pavano. Irabu. Likely Ellsbury
Were their various guys who's undisciplined lack of taking care of themselves left a lot of bad ABS and errors and suboptimal performance on the field? And would not fit on the current Yankees? sure
Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, Ford, Skowron, Boyer and a guy called Babe Ruth come to mind.
But I have no evidence that sub effort applies to Stanton.
More interestingly, I think the Yankees intend ( even this offseason) to go after hitters who shrink and stay in the zone, then hit hard and if possible with a slight lift.
I think they are slowly also valuing defense more and more ( when you look at some of the decisions they have made)
On the pitching side, more and more they try to go no more than 2 times through the lineup ( unless its the other teams b0ttom end of the lineup coming up) and then change eyelevel, spin rates, pitch recognition, delivery mechanics the opposing hitters see by multiple pitchers.
Yeah yeah its easy to say ( like that idiot Buck repeats and repeats) that some thing can go wrong. But that is offset by the mountain of hitting obstacles new pitching variations present. ( Green high in the zone/Britton low in the zone/Kahnle side to side/Chapman up and down eye levels).
I think the Yankees will continue to compete via savages in the box and a differentiated bullpen and several players who can play two or more positions. May not have the one more horse this year in the bullpen to pull it off, but I think that's how they are trying to compete/build versus the other top six super organizations.
all just imo
still can't believe that Smith joker completely shut them down Â
I typically don't like to theorize on how injured players are or aren't - I guess I've just become a bit frustrated with the way Stanton's year has gone. Feels like he's played less than 5 games and wound up injured on 3 separate occasions now this year. It's hard to figure out why he's been so injury prone or if it's just a bad coincidence - but a game like last night, we really needed him and he was unavailable, which left us shorthanded and really sucked.
Apparently they think he'll be able to give it a go tomorrow. I hope he can. Would love to see him hit one out in a big spot and see the stadium erupt.

Same here and I was thinking the same with German too. This pen would've been deadly with both of those guys added to it.
Totally forgot about German. He could’ve been the fourth Â
starter. And if Betances were available, Boone’d make every starter an opener!
Yeah and every starter being able to get an out or even an inning out of the pen on their throw days if needed. The Nats have done that already with Sherzer and Corbin with great success.
No Stanton, Hicks starts in center, Gardy in left, Edwin DH. Â
Good gosh. Unreal.
Unreal. Good thing we got Hicks back just in time. Too bad Maybin can't hit Verlander.

Nuts! Never ends.
Stanton is the Glassman. Just cannot stay healthy, unreal. Becoming Ellsbury 2.0
lets go rock verlander now!
There was no doubt we were going to get his A game. Have to figure out a way to beat him.
great AB by EE
I don’t see it at all. Yankees already hit a ball 110 and 100MPH in play. EE ripped one foul also at around 110.
They seem to be seeing the ball well. Unless something changes, the dam will break.
+1 yanks need to get to their pen. i think our trouble comes with paxton...we need him to match zeros until we can get to pen or get to verlander

Paxton looks like crap. Not locating at all.

Oh shut the fuck up you fucking loser bitch.
Went back to his fastball and looks better. Missing by too much with his curve to get them to chase
His heater is there but the breaking ball isn't sharp. Probably due to all the rest.

these guys just getting up there hacking away.
Just looking at those swings, it feels like they did
these guys just getting up there hacking away.
That’s how they want to go after Verlander. You get a fastball early in the count, it’s probably the most hittable pitch of the AB. They’re just missing so far.
It’s pick your poison...take more pitches, and they’re left chasing 2 strike breaking balls. Simple fact is he’s a great pitcher...someone needs to get a hold of one and break through for us
these guys just getting up there hacking away.
Maybe because he's throwing strikes? Ever think of that?
Gio swung at one up and out of the zone but they haven't really been chasing. They're taking good hacks for the most part.
He's given up a lot of HRs this year so a bloop and a blast isnt out of the question.

really helps when Fucking Fox is doing super close ups into his glove. Not even making the Stros work hard to steal signs tonight...
Is this on twitter somewhere or did you pick it up?

I got an alert from Bleacher Report. Stated that one of the Astros hitters confirmed that Paxton was tipping pitches.
He says Glove at the dugout and then wipes his helmet

Most likely. But if Stanton can come back game 3 he might be on the bench. Guy was great all year. Just last night and tonight he looks like he’s pressing a bit
It was. Shows Verlander is no Superman. Good, but . . . .
Glad to see Green in there putting out the fire, too.

Some of it is also mental Gamesmanship. Who knows. Getting into you Opponents head is huge in a series like this. Meanwhile Didi making Verlander work.
You're playing with fire with Green after about 25 pitches.
Green at 26 pitches vs top of the lineup? You make a change. Ottavino didn't get the job done there but any manager would make the same call.
i agree
Needs to knuckle down here.
You can't manage that way in the playoffs and especially a 7 game series.
Head scratching.
You can't manage that way in the playoffs and especially a 7 game series.
You can't manage that way in the playoffs and especially a 7 game series.
So far it's working. "Hot hand" just doesn't ever work. It's in the numbers, the odds. Like it or not.
98MPH fastballs and an absolutely devastating, fall-off-the-table changeup. Wow.

Yup they just said it on the broadcast - Springer was 0-4 with 3 Ks against Ottavino.
That was less about a bad decision by Boone, and more Ottavino just made a bad pitch, and a good hitter didn’t miss it.
Yeah, we are.
You can't manage that way in the playoffs and especially a 7 game series.
Head scratching.
Why is it head scratching? They did what needed to be done to get out of the inning tied and move forward.
Look at the success Tampa had vs them throwing all their guys. The Yanks went with 13 pitchers for a reason, and with the day off tomorrow, don't be surprised to see everyone but Sevy and Masa tonight.
That Verlander gets better the third time around explanation was nonsensical.

Not Paxton. The move to take Green out at a certain pitch number or with a certain batter coming up.
Paxton getting yanked was the right decision, imo.
Missed a hittable one there
well hopefully verlander only has one more in him.
be great haha
Insane!
bases loaded for sanchez with verlander around 100 pitches and laboring
He has gotten some luck, but to be fair they hit some vicious at'em balls in the early innings too
This
And we dont even know if DJ went on his own
[quote] to decide whether or not to send him, once it gets away from Altuve you have to, it just took a lucky bounce for the Astros. That ball hops anywhere else and it's 3-2 yankees, 1st and 3rd. [/quote
yea and usually the SS isn't as close to the 2b
If it was a 2-2 pitch I doubt he would've but at 3-2 DJ was running on the pitch and rounding third as the ball bounced away from Altuve. If it rolls away from him a little more instead of right to Correa, he scores.
Put the pressure on them to make the play and they did,

This
I think you're both right after all.
Lots of chatter from the players about this. Its clear to me.
Yeah they went a little thick there on him. He happened to be in the right spot at the right time.
You have to send the runner there. It takes a lot of things to happen for that play to end up an out. The ball has to stay close to a fielder, he has to pick it up, and make an accurate throw.
So many times, that results in one of those parts failing.
If it bounces to the right towards the outfield, Correa has to field it going towards the outfield, then spin and make a longer throw. Never going to happen.
Quote:
Has MLB commented on the fact that they obviously went back to the old balls?

I am baffled as to why they thought it was a good idea to change the ball back right before the playoffs after a full season of it being juiced.
There’s at least three more home runs tonight with the ball from the regular season.
I imagine Verlander is through for the night.
be a nice time for sanchez to get going

Exactly. It just took a bad bounce for the Yanks.
It was a nice play by the Stros and that's why they're here. Both teams are showing why they won as much as they did this year and why they're the last two standing in the AL.

Yeah Judge would have had two, urshella one, and the Stros one.
swings at outside pitch and then looks at a perfect strike
be a nice time for sanchez to get going
Worst AB of the night IMO.
Might as well let him pitch to the 9th with that approach
If anyone pre-game offered knocking Verlander our tied 2-2 in the 7th, i think we’d have all signed up for it.
It just stings how it was one bad pitch from Ottavino to make it 2-2

okay lets get some runs!

fucking terrible. you know verlander on the edge of coming out....you go out take first pitch then make a horrible pass at a ball. then look at a great pitch to hit. then swing at pitch in dirt....4 pitches lol. horrible
Fuck off already, whoever you are. You do almost nothing but bitching and moaning.
With Verlander and Cole the gameplan should be, play them even and beat the Houston pen.
Quote:
SHITTY plate discipline...its embarrassing. didi, EE and sanchez really need to change approach

huh? bro....are you a fucking pussy or what? can we not say anything negative?
You dont think those three have been struggling and having bad ABs? holy shit. what a fucking girl dude. its like we have to suck them off no matter how they play.
i think we have to stay with him for a little
DJ-Judge-Torres won’t be enough, rest of the lineup has to pick it up.
Hasn't done two innings yet. He's good.

Missing Stanton sucks...he was one more guy who was seeing the ball pretty well and having good ABs

He's in there through Brantley. Definitely won't see any of the batters he faced when he came in for Otto.
They earned their paychecks tonight.
In some ways the series hangs in the balance right now. We pull this out, good chance we don’t come back to Houston to face Verlander and Cole in games 6 and 7
Brilliant take there. Should put you on Fox
Quote:
i think yanks have to feel if they get 1 here they could win this with britton and chapman still up
Brilliant take there. Should put you on Fox
lol i just simply meant the astros dont scare me and i dont think they scare the yanks either.
appreciate the attitude though. glad to see BBI is consistently delivering on an open place for discussion
break out here!
Agreed. Brutal AB’s. Almost as bad as Sanchez.
Quote:
He needs to be the DH for game 3 and EE to the bench.
Agreed. Brutal AB’s. Almost as bad as Sanchez.
be careful. greg will jump on you for saying something negative LOL.
i agree though, said it earlier. he hasnt had a good AB yet
I don’t think we’ve ever make him blow a save, going back to when he was in Toronto
Same here. Get this guy to roll over one and into a DP.
Let's go, Sanchino, let's run into one.
Time for the bats to break through
Yup, 2-1 pitch was his shot
Come on Gio
Be careful I said same thing and gregs vagina started hurting
Agree, just change approach some, they will snap out of it
Quote:
Is missing fastballs right down the pipe now. Not good. He and EE look lost.

Didn’t you give up on the season hours ago?
Should have left Britton in. When we lose this guy with JA Happ giving up a bomb in the 10th or 11th inning you can blame Boone for going to Chapman when Britton still had plenty in the tank.
Yup. Great game...will be a gut shot if we can’t pull this out. Come on Chappy
Really?
I'm not getting that at all.
Let's hope Boone has the stones to go to Loiasiga, who looked absolutely nasty last night.
Quote:
how the hell do they let him call these games with his obvious anti-Yankees bias.

He was literally hoping for Chapman leaves one over the plate. Listen to how excited he gets when something good happens for the Astros and how quiet he gets when it's the reverse.
Sabathia.
Yeah, this is Ali/Frazier with both teams going toe to toe.
him sanchez and EE need to get it going.
lets go DJ!
Bottom half of the order is a black hole right now
Freaking CC for now. I have a bad feeling too
Can we survive Loasiga now?

Now we’ll get Happ in an almost impossible spot.
once shit stain paxton came out he needed to extend everyone some. should have left in green, left in britton. now we have young inexperienced guys or bums coming in to try and keep us alive....

Agree that we should have extended Britton and/or Chapman
Now we’ll get Happ in an almost impossible spot.
Because they were never going to let Cessa pitch to Alvarez. So they didnt want to burn Cessa for 2 batters.
Looking that way right now.
This game isn't his finest hour, but something tells me you're a parachute in when the playoffs start only type of fan. Because even if you disagree with the way it's been managed today, if you watched consistently at any point over the past 2 years you would never say he's terrible at managing a bullpen
taking paxton out yes. but he needed to extend pen guys since then....britton and green both had more in tank and we needed to extend

Maybe Britton. If we had extended Chapman, I don't think we'd be in any better of a situation right now.
Agreed. He managed in the moment all game to get out of each inning. You don't manage to save guys in case you get to extras. You hope your bats come through along the way.

This is plainly wrong. If that's how you feel why not bring in Chapman in the 2nd inning with 2 runners on? You have to be prepared for a time game in the 9th t go to extra inning.s

Fair, but it’s a risk reward play. You now may not even get to burn Cessa.
playoff baseball insane
Agree. I have no problems. The team has a plan and they’re sticking to it. Ottavino screwed it up, man had one job
Haha. Same thought

You need to get the big outs along the way or you never get to Chapman or extra innings.
You don't bring in Chapman in the 2nd inning because that's not his job. It's Green's and the other big arms in the pen.
All things equal the pen got into the 11th giving up 1 run, they've done well.
Have to score a run here.
Pressly did not look good in Game 1.
glad he walked though...glad the submariner is out. we couldnt sniff him....
be nice if gardner gets a 2 out rally going and we threaten to take a lead here
make up for that by tagging the gap. thanks
tag the gap scores EE lol
Would it be worth bringing in a pinch runner for EE? Then maybe pinch-hitting Stanton if the 4 spot comes up again?
Only have Romine and Stanton left on bench
Romine's not much of a pinch runner.
Can't, only have Romine and Stanton on bench
Just remembered Wade isn’t on the roster.
Would have been a perfect time to use Wade but...

Forgot about that. Buck just mentioned it.
This is the worst game all year that I've seen all year at them swinging at pitches off the plate - some of them WAY off the plate.
Reminds me so much of the damn games here in 2017.

Yup

and then have the opinion(and still do) that the stros are going to the WS....that makes me a fake fan?
does it tho? or does it make me someone who understands the game of baseball and what it takes to win....our SP going 3 innings IS NOT sustainable and is not a winning formula come playoff time...it just isnt. cole will go fucking 8 innings on tuesday...THATS how you win. again...take a fucking hike. i dont care i you think i am a "fake" fan. i am just a fan who understands we wont win if we cant pitch
hope so!! i know the bronx will be rocking! hopefully we can get cole in game 3.
I'm taking the under
Annoying loss, but Yanks are winning this fucking series.
Cole is great. But they'll smack him around. This series doesnt go back to Houston. Yanks in 5.
The potential rain out on Wednesday will likely mean 4 straight days of games if it goes 7. Not ideal for the Yanks to not have an off day in those 4 days with how much Yanks will likely need from the bullpen

its common fucking sense. 2.1 innings from your starter isnt a winning formula. sorry that i know that in my "7.5" games and you dont in 162. again...if we dont pitch well, we wont win
If I was told that they would be 1-1 coming out of Houston I'd have been pretty doggone happy and I am. Just need Sevy to be Sevy on Tuesday.
After Otto gave up that HR to Springer all I could think of was Otto saying he would strike out Babe Ruth almost every time...one bad pitch.
Fresh start Tuesday. Bats wake up and we get 5+ from sevy we have a good shot

It would be better for Sevy to just pitch a perfect game and everyone to hit homeruns. That might do it.

Ottavino screwed up the plan. Man had one job
Astros wanted no part of it in 2017. Actually, since then we had their number at the Bronx. Hoping for it to continue.
Complain all you want about Happ, but we really only had Judge's bomb and that was it.
You aren't going to win many when you get 1 hit after the 6th inning.
We took one in Houston, which was needed and I think we frustrated Verlander a bit. Need to win 2 of 3 in NY now. Or better yet - a sweep.

I understand why he brought in Otto, but Green was dealing. Green was at 26 pitches, so maybe he was looking down the road to game 4...

Should work both ways, but makes me feel even more helpless facing Cole.
But October is October. Let's get weird.

With the quality of the hitters on both sides, I think the majority of both lineups were boom or bust last night. 2-2 through 10 innings with numerous chances on both sides.

My friends bought tickets for Thursday's game and trying to figure out what to do with flights up from Florida.
Thursday is scheduled to be game 5 (third game in NYC),
if that game was rained out, would be pushed to Friday.

And yes... I agree.. I definitely think I'm coming down with something. My doc would probably just tell me to take a day off and watch some playoff baseball, so..
Oh wait - that places me as a lot older than 35!!!!

Hahaha
Doesn't sound like a big issue, but I think he was expressing how we all felt.

I'm a big fan of Stanton, but this is becoming pretty frustrating.
...
Also... tomorrow is my 35th bday; I should probably just cut out of work and go to the game, right?
Have to join in on the Happy Birthday. As for cutting out of work, you'd be a fool not to, as they say. Especially if your health is unsteady. Boone may need to call on you!
We better get him this offseason.

I heard Bill Mazeroski's walk-off home run on a transistor radio on the school bus. Everyone was rooting for the Yankees (there was no NL team in NY in 1960) and we were all severely bummed out.

IF we can do it...

Definitely felt the absence of Betances big time last night. In those late innings, that's all I kept thinking to myself.
I typically don't like to theorize on how injured players are or aren't - I guess I've just become a bit frustrated with the way Stanton's year has gone. Feels like he's played less than 5 games and wound up injured on 3 separate occasions now this year. It's hard to figure out why he's been so injury prone or if it's just a bad coincidence - but a game like last night, we really needed him and he was unavailable, which left us shorthanded and really sucked.
Apparently they think he'll be able to give it a go tomorrow. I hope he can. Would love to see him hit one out in a big spot and see the stadium erupt.

There have been several balls hit where off the bat I thought were gone, just based on watching games all season and knowing what a HR tends to look like off the bat, and they've just died on the warning track. Definitely think it's possible they've messed with the balls again.

Same here and I was thinking the same with German too. This pen would've been deadly with both of those guys added to it.
Yeah and every starter being able to get an out or even an inning out of the pen on their throw days if needed. The Nats have done that already with Sherzer and Corbin with great success.
