I m can’t think of a better candidate than him to be a head coach...even to this day, talk about a guy whose lived off of talent
While I don't disagree, I do think there is something to be said around that it is indeed a skill in itself to coax greatness out of talent. Some people can get more out of talent than others. It's a scale. Just like some people who can get a lot out of less talent, are not able to demonstrably more with greater talent.
I get the sense he needs big time players in order to run his style effectively.
The jump in production from 2015 to 2016 is a good example. Same coach, same scheme, but a healthier roster with added talent at all 3 levels. We finished #2 in points allowed behind the eventual SB Champion Patriots.

1990 Giants weren't super talented on D...
Seems odd now but they were often big underdogs in Vegas.

His scheme is predicated on pressure, he needs a four-man front that can dictate the LOS, shut down the run, and generate a push so he can bring extra heat off the edges. When his men are handled one on one up front, they get run on. Houston and Ford are studs, they subtract a ton of toughness and identity from the defense.
I get that you need talent to be able to produce good defenses, but he has only been even serviceable with HOF-level talent. Find me any DC that ISN'T successful when they can get consistent pressure from the front 4?
He had 3 good seasons with the Giants, everything else wasn't just been mediocre, he's had some of the worst defenses in NFL history.
RE: RE: Can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit. Â
Another way of looking at his career is that he simply has never made any difference at all.
This is it exactky. I'm not even sure what his scheme is. He only had success wheb he had the best DL in the game, which frankly every DC should be able to claim. Absent a completely dominant front 4, he has never schened around the issue. He has overseen a few of the very worst Dsin history.
Loved him his first go around with us.
That 07 defense...man. After Week 2 vs. GB, I think we all thought it was over, but that defense became a beast.

2008 was even better.

True. I wish more posters would recognize that...
