NFT: Who has been to Zurich?

pjcas18 : 10/14/2019 2:08 pm
I will be there for a week on business, but I should have some free time.

Any must do's or places that stuck out as memorable?

Staying at the Zurich Marriott (assuming there is not more than one called "the Zurich Marriott".

thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts.
I stayed at the Marriott Zurich

at the start and end of a trip to Lake Como Italy a few years ago. The hotel is nice with a really good concierge lounge for breakfast and happy hour as I recall. Hotel is right near the Limmat River which was a happening spot for locals. Of course we went during the summer when they were all diving/swimming in the river. You will be centrally located to some great cafe's and dining options in Zurich. Don't forget to go out for a Fondue dinner. Kind of what they're known for. Just be prepared for the high prices of dining out. Zurich is an expensive city. If you have time, it's easy to do some great day trips from Zurich. Interlaken and Wengen were a couple that we visited. Great scenery and places to visit along the way. Harder Kulm has a great panoramic restaurant.

Sprungli for Chocolate
Lake Zurich - grab a beer and hang out (pretty views and very relaxing). Check out the Arboretum there as well
Plaza Casa Lenin - ya know, socialism and stuff
FIFA Museum
Zueghauskeller - Old arms building they've turned into a biergarten w/ traditional food.
Le Dezaley - favorite fondue.

Also - unsure of your plans but you are reasonable train ride away from Italy. Not sure if you'll have time but Lugano/Lake Como/Milan aren't too far away
Hmm, was there in 2000

I remember expensive shopping and fine dining but no names return to me. Very walkable city, Switzerland is a beautiful and wealthy old country. Like the other poster, we wound up driving to Lake Como, Interlaken, Lucerne, and Geneva when we got restless.
Zurich is nice but pales in comparison to the rest of Switzerland.

If you can, get to Lucerne / Luzern ...it’s drop dead gorgeous. Just outside Lucerne is a town called Stans with Stanserhorn Mountain. (6200 ft peak) The cable car to the top has an upper deck where you can ride outside. Google it ... this is the only one of its kind in the world and it is a trip !
Thank you

for all the advice!

I appreciate the replies.

Can definitely do a day trip to Italy or travel to other places within Switzerland, so I appreciate the advice so far.
Since it sounds like you can do a side trip

I'd highly recommend Lake Como that and some of the villages around the lake. Some great spots for Food, Drink and people watching.
It’s been a long time

What I remember that stuck out were two things:
1. Swiss National Museum
2. Train ride from Zurich to Milan was beautiful.

Cheers....

B2 Boutique Hotel + Spa. The spa is incredible, rooftop pool overlooking Zurich

Rent a car and drive to grindlewald and lauterbrunnen for a day
I’ve been there several times.

Very expensive city. Have a beer at the beer garden on the river.
I worked there a lot in the 90s.

Great base for side trips - Interlaken/Jungfraujoch was a favorite. As for the city, the posts above hit most of the key points. Try to get out of the center and into the neighborhoods. I used to walk along the Zurichsee to get away from work. For the women in your life, check the sale rack at Fogal for hosiery and lingerie. It’s a super-pricey brand (sure to impress and set the mood) but the locals get some nice deals on overstock and prior-season styles.

one of the cool things about Zurich is your first impression, the airport: depending on which gates you de-plane, you duck below grade and ride the moving sidewalks below the airport runways to the main terminal, a trip + 1/2, can't think of another airport that has that.

Very wealthy (Swiss banking center), German, and as others have said, very expensive. Too long for me to make current recos, though I can ask a good friend who lives in Como, which btw is hardly a side trip away, good part of a day to train to Como and longer to drive. But, yeah, Como is spectacular, Balbianello (former home of a Roman Cardinal, where part of a Bond flic was filmed) and Bellagio, some terrific restaurants in the hills above the city.

LOL...I see what you're saying
BTW, if you happen to speak German...
Big Blue Blogger : 10/15/2019 12:34 pm : link
...you’re unlikely to find it very useful, because Schweizerdeutsch comprises quite a challenging array of dialects. The Swiss can switch to Hochdeutsch, but at that point you might as well just speak English, which is pretty universally known anyway.

They have great other things to, like roast quail and other small game birds. Must hit spot. Very casual, near the opera house.

The bar at Widder Hotel is awesome.
Go To Gstaad.
