Cards game will be a good measuring stick for this team

PerpetualNervousness : 10/14/2019 3:54 pm
and this coach. the Giants have been punching above their weight the last couple of weeks. but Sunday they'll be a home favorite against another rebuilding team, though one slightly behind in their process. assuming Barkley's back and not some sort of decoy, the Giants should be able to move the ball and score points. and while the Cardinals have some weapons on offense, their o-line stinks. if this defense really is starting to come together as a unit, this is a game we should see it make a difference in the outcome. and if you subscribe to the theory that underlay Shurmur's hiring - that having an experienced NFL coach matters - he also should be a difference maker on Sunday.

if it's a solid win, then it'll be much easier to be optimistic about where things are going. maybe 7-9 or 8-8 isn't unrealistic, and it'll feel like we're moving in a good direction. but if they lose, they're likely to be favored in at most two more games the rest of the season, and we'll really have to wonder what's being built here. yes, Jones will give us a reason to watch the games, but if Shurmur loses to Kingsbury, it'll be hard to make the case that he's bringing much value to this organization.
I could see

the Giants easily losing this game, especially if Barkley doesn’t play.
I could see them

winning it also. Sheesh
Will we line-up Dexter Lawrence over Justin Pugh....?

Good post

This one could go either way. Would be nice to get healthier this week. I really hope this team comes out and gets a W at home in this one.

I think this is a good matchup for the Giants

especially if SB plays.

This also seems like a great game to get Julian Love on the field, S. Beal, maybe C. Ballentine. No one in that passing attack should scare anyone. You've got extra time to prepare these guys to get out there with the Thurs. night game the week before.

Let the young guys play.

Hope so but they better protect the edges or their QB will kill us.
Murray is improving each game.

An absolute double threat. The kind of QB we always seem to have loads of trouble with.

I believe we can and will win, but I can also see a 31-10 loss

Um ... the Giants suck too. Arizona is very much a team that's about on the same level as we are.

Plus you have the first 2 rookie QBs drafted facing each other.

get their horses back, no game will truly be a measuring stick.

I would love to see this offense execute with at least Saquon and Engram on the field with Jones. Once that happens, we will get a better idea of where this team is at. But they weren't going to win the last two games either way.

I think it's obvious that with all of their weapons, the Giants can finish the season 10-0 and win the division at 12-4. Change my mind! ;)

He is - If I'm JB - I'd play a lot of 3 safety looks and make Julian Love spy KM. Make him beat you with his arm and not his legs.

I see a lot of Tea DAvis in this game and less D. Mayo.

Our DL should be able to dominate and stop the run...it's the RBs out of the backfield and the slot stuff in that spread offense that would trouble me.
I wish we could trade coaches with AZ
arniefez : 10/14/2019 4:28 pm : link
I've never wanted the Giants to hire a college coach before. But now I wish Tisch would go pay Lincoln Riley whatever he wants to see if his game will work in the NFL. The Giants have the QB and the RB to run his offense. More than likely we'll find out when he's coaching the Cowboys next year.
will be a good test to see where Jones and the Gs are really at
stoneman : 10/14/2019 5:08 pm : link
An opponent that if you are playoff birth worthy, you should beat handily, not dominate, but beat by 2 or 3 scores in the end.

Any other result is wait till next year.
Measuring stick, how?

They have a rookie QB and were the worst team in the league a year ago. Is this to measure how we stack against bad teams?

What season was it again? The one where we had all our horses all season so we could assess the team? It seems like the Giants are always missing significant pieces, year after year. Their performance might be great when the team is healthy, but really sucky otherwise. I guess the realistic assessment lies somewhere in the middle.
Maybe next year

Giants are more talented than the Cards
WillVAB : 10/14/2019 7:04 pm : link
There’s no excuse to lose this game. If Shurmur loses to a rookie HC with an inferior roster he should instantly be on the hot seat.

The 1:00 kick off for west coast teams has always puzzled me as I think it gives the east coast team a tiny advantage.

P.S. Isn't every game a measuring stick?
The Cards played
Bill in UT : 10/14/2019 7:53 pm : link
a really inconsistant game yesterday. At times their D line put on a lot of pressure, they covered well and swarmed to stop the run. Reddick really seemed active at LB. Other times they gave up big runs and let Ryun just march down the field. They've been a better team than I exptected after what seemed like a less than stellar draft/offseason. I think the game with the Giants will be pretty competitive.
We have to win 3 of the next 4 (including beating Dallas)
Leg of Theismann : 10/15/2019 4:22 am : link
To keep hope alive for the season. Can’t lose to the Cards and then expect to win 3 straight. This game is huge as far as “playing meaningful football” in November is concerned (which I think we all agree is a primary goal of ours as low as that bar is). I’d really like to be going into the game against Dallas with a real chance to either leap frog them or at least pull within a half game of them. Unlikely that’ll be the case if we lose to a college HC next weekend.
Murray
Gruber : 10/15/2019 5:45 am : link
Kyler Murray is a really good thrower of the ball. As good when he's moving as when he's standing still. And all the stuff about his height? He's just so quick, he can drop back and throw in a tight window.

Beal won't be able to play for two weeks due to the IR rules. Ballentine will play as Arizona do a ton of 5 wides.

I honestly thought the Vikings were the measuring stick.
We didn't have Barkley or Tate though.

Even with them, I don't see us being good enough.

There is no way we only put 10 points up with SB comin back against that defense even with Peterson coming back.
Murray..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/15/2019 8:19 am : link
has gotten some favorable calls when he's hit or when he runs.

The Cards were gifted a win last week when Murray was a half yard short of a first down but given it anyway.
This is a good measuring stick
ryanmkeane : 10/15/2019 8:22 am : link
for Shurmur as a coach. You have a home game after a 10 day rest, against arguably a less talented team, coming across the country for a 1 pm start. This needs to be a win.

No, the Cards are better measuring stick. The Vikings are a Really good measuring stick.

holy shit, every week?

well if we had EE & SS & XX, fuckin' super bowl bound. oh and LB, edge rusher.

Shurmur has to go! Oh, he scripted 4 straight opening drives for scores, ok, he can stay until 10-17-2020 at 4:20pm, then Eli & Tanney take over the coaches room. Man, that room doesn't know what it's in for next year.

my eyes!
This line being only 2.5 really sticks out with a west coast team

They are both good sticks. You are right, we are not the Patriots een if healthy(we were broken, it matters). I hope you knew that before the game. The Cards are closer to our talent level and coaching. This will also be a good measuring stick.
agree with the point about Shurmur
JonC : 10/15/2019 2:22 pm : link
This is a game the Giants should win, if they're closer to healthy on offense.

Anyone thinking this is an 8+ win roster ... I don't see it.

Most certainly seems that way.

I get it. But we know the Giants aren't a good team yet. Good teams beat them, even when those teams don't play that well. The question is how close are they to being a good team. Beating a dysfunctional Washington team about to fire its coach didn't really tell us much. If this is team on the rise, i want to see it on the field. I want to see Jones and this offense outscore Murray and his offense. I want to see the defense put together a complete game against a flawed opponent. And I want to see Shurmer outcoach Kingsbury. Otherwise, all this talk of growth and development is just that - talk. if we're not better than this Cardinals team, which basically cut it's first round pick from last year, and fired its coach, and has an offensive line arguably worse than any line the Giants have fielded even in the Flowers/Hart heyday, then something isn't working right.
I thought this too, but then if you think about it
Dinger : 10/15/2019 3:16 pm : link
each game is a measuring stick this season. I think a lot of people, myself included, came away with a positive impression after the asswhooping in Foxboro, because our team showed up to play and though we had a few miscues our rookie QB showed he's not overwhelmed in big situations and our young defense may actually have some talent.

I want to see how the defense plays this game. Having Murray is another big test for them, rookie or not. He's very mobile and very talented. And the offense, I believe, does not need to get cute, they need to exeCUTE! This game will be about the coaches as I think talent and experience are similar.....
