There has to be better runners out there that you can sign to the practice squad. This guy has proven he can't play.
You could swap out Hilliman's name
Gatorade Dunk : 10/15/2019 2:47 am : link
For Stupar or Fowler, the point would remain the same: this regime values familiarity over talent, even when the latter is completely absent.
Holy fuck
Tuckrule : 10/15/2019 6:16 am : link
He doesn’t have any vision. What do they see in him?? He honestly reminds me of Andre Williams. Zero vision runs right to where the play is designed to go and has fumbling issues. He’s awful. The backs they had last year in preseason showed much more promise. Just mind boggling decisions.

There may be better runners, but are they PS eligible?
They would have resigned him sooner
Giantimistic : 10/15/2019 8:08 am : link
But he kept dropping the pen.
Hilliman
jvm52106 : 10/15/2019 8:27 am : link
has zero vision but makes up for it with average to below average quickness. Negative times a negative= positive (ie Championship)
You need bodies for the scout team
BillT : 10/15/2019 8:37 am : link
And actually there doesn’t have to be someone better out there that is PS eligible. There might be or there might not.

Generally, I agree. However, in this case, Hilliman has shown absolutely nothing to merit keeping around. Cycle through other free agents and try to find someone who DOES show something.

Not a big deal, but perplexing.
Well, he

Yes, and they should never be questioned because they always get it right. And fans who disagree with management are always wrong. Like when they complained the Eli Apple was a terrible draft pick they were wrong because the Giants knew more than the fans did about the player.
Fowler was on the opening 53
WillieYoung : 10/15/2019 8:56 am : link
so they were already paying him for the season. Nothing to do with familiarity.
Maybe Gettleman owes his uncle money?

I don't get it either...
BC Eagles94 : 10/15/2019 9:16 am : link
and I have much more familiarity with him too. He played at BC and was terrible, outside of his freshmen year. He was good his first year, broke his leg early in his 2nd missing rest of the season, and then was never any good again. He couldn't find a hole with GPS while at BC after his freshmen year. He transferred to Rutgers for his 5th year, since BC had All-ACC RB AJ Dillon, and he stunk there too.

It baffles my mind he is hanging around the NFL, let alone started for us for a couple games. There has to be better talent even for the Practice Squad. And the fact they started him vs. NE was an insult to us fans. Get a damn vet that can play. I don't give a crap if Hilliman "knows the playbook." That must be one of the most overrated things in football.
It is the last spot on the practice squad
Mike from Ohio : 10/15/2019 9:34 am : link
so not really a critical spot, but how often do you add guys to the practice squad who have had a shot in the NFL and shown no flash at all after two starts?

Sure they guy could just be a really slow developer, but this is also not some athletic freak that just needs coaching and development. The guy's upside looks like a fringe NFL player.

I'd say trust the professionals, but these are the same guys who brought in Jonathan Stewart so it is fair to ask if they may value familiarity over talent.
Comparing..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/15/2019 9:35 am : link
the comments now to the people wanting him after limited preseason action is kind of ironic.
I'm Sure Hilliman
Trainmaster : 10/15/2019 9:59 am : link
is great in the running back room.

I'm pretty sure they were only on the hook for $280k in dead money for Fowler. The re-signing is independent of that, and 100% consistent with this regime's overvaluation of familiarity.
kind of harsh
fkap : 10/15/2019 10:22 am : link
to condemn an undrafted rookie who was an emergency call up off the PS.

Lots of higher expectation players have flubbed badly in their first outings.

The likelihood of anyone on the PS making it in the NFL is pretty low, so expectations have to be tempered.

The Giants obviously thought enough of him to return him to the PS, whether it is for development for the future, or simply to do PS duties (scout team, practice body, whatever).

Gatorade Dunk : 10/15/2019 10:25 am : link
They should be churning the last few slots looking for some overlooked talent rather than continuing to bring back the guys who have shown they can't play.

It's one of the luxuries of being in a rebuild - you can take some additional chances with your PS and the bottom end of the roster to hopefully discover hidden gems. Instead, we have a front office that's voluntarily stuck on rinse/repeat.

Especially for the RB position. OK, so you're not going to find a hidden gem at QB off of someone's PS. But you'll find plenty of guys who can do a credible job at RB. No, they aren't all going to step in and replace Barkley without missing a beat, but they should be better than Hilliman.

That's great - but they don't have to know more than us, they have to know more than the other 31 NFL teams. And while I'm sure they're not at the bottom, I don't know how far up that list they really are.

Part of the problem is that you can't take guys off of other practice squads to simply add them to your practice squad. So the guys you'd be cycling through are guys that weren't good enough to make any practice squad to date.

Agree completely. Lets face it, the only reason he was activated off of the PS in the first place was because we had no one else! Thats a separate issue as I agree with most that we should have signed someone with at least a little NFL experience. But we didnt. At this point, Hilliman is a PS player. And he played like one. Guys are on the PS for a reason; they arent developed enough yet to make the roster. You activate guys off of the PS in an emergency situation and that is pretty damn close to the performance you are gonna get from most of them. So now he is back where he started; not really worth making a huge deal out of it.

went in the first round of this XFL thing ... I would have liked to see him get a look on our PS .... he was a good but oft injured back in college.

Bingo, you never find any wheat if you keep bringing in the same chaff
Guys are on the practice squad because they offer promise
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 10/15/2019 12:08 pm : link
the game hasn't slowed down for him yet. The fact that he hasn't played well against two top defenses in his first season is hardly dispositive as to his talent. If they don't see progress, they will cut him. They have not shown any unwillingness to do that with others.
What a stupid move

Good Lord....

He can't play....

What about the fact that he sucked in college? Does that matter?

I'm a much better GM than DG. In Madden I get freaks on my practice squad like size/speed guys like Scarborough or 94 speed Corey Grant. At least they bring something to the table, I wouldn't touch Hilliman with a 10 foot pole, if he's even in the game.
he was never supposed to

leave the practice squad. he only got called up due to an emergency. re-signing him makes sense

I thought Hilliman pretty much played his way out of the organization, but "mind boggling"?

I don't know what they see in him, exactly, but developmental players are, by definition, under-prepared for NFL action. He was over-promoted and failed.

The sample size for the guy is still pretty small for sweeping conclusions about what he can and can't do. He sure better learn to hold onto the ball, though.

And he knows the O. Its not like you're going to find a legitimate stater on the scrapheap. Barkley is due back this week; hopefully he stays healthy.
